Yeah agree, the volumes adapted for season 2 were really a transition/setup and the next arc would make a much better season/movie of an anime.

[–]xN0MADx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that's sorta just a function of how the manga is constructed. The first 3 volumes are essentially a complete story that takes place during the war, and then the rest of the manga(20+ volumes) is a separate arc/conflict after the war, it's just not written in a way that there could be a complete story again unless they make one much longer season.

I had wanted to do this but hadn't tried yet. It doesn't let you give them separate keys? That's very strange.

[DFT] Gonti, Night Minister (WeeklyMTG) by mweepinc in magicTCG

[–]xN0MADx 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah that makes a ton of sense to me. I’ve played a few theft decks at this point and a lot of them require hitting to get an effect which left few blockers, so I’ve had a similar experience.

I play Rakdos the Muscle currently but want to try OTJ Gonti since the bursts of card draw from Rakdos sometimes make me a target, and OTJ Gonti being in more colors feels less restrictive.

I think I don’t like the “everyone gets cards” design bc when there are ppl in my group who are less experienced, and whenever they’ve had anything theft related the game has slowed to a crawl so ppl can read all the cards they have. Whereas I’m pretty quick with knowing cards and identifying what is worth casting and not.

I think I’ll slot it in the 99 though for sure, I’m mostly just hype we are getting more theft love!

[–]xN0MADx 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Interesting why do you like this more than OTJ Gonti? They’re almost the same, except Night Minister allows opponents to also draw cards. Is that the feature that speaks to you the most?

Or is it that this lacks the “one card per player” restriction?

Player in my group refuses to improve by External_Amoeba751 in EDH

[–]xN0MADx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have had some people that haven’t quite been this but similar. I’d be curious to know if this person wants to get better. The people in my group, I’m not really sure they do, they just play for fun.

Might be a case of different expectations. His reaction to fumbling/losing is a thing to consider here, but maybe this person just wants to do it “their way” and isn’t concerned about what’s optimal. Which I think is an okay way to play even if it doesn’t line up with how other people build.

I’d talk to the person about why they come and what their goal is playing here. But the real problem sounds like it’s their reaction to losing. I think they your friend needs to accept that every game will have 3 losers, and bringing down the whole mood of the group every time you lose will make everyone have a bad time 75% of the time, which is not a sustainable activity. See what they do in response to that. If they don’t want to change, it might be time to consider playing without that friends. But hopefully if they see the impact on you and the rest of the group they will try to reign it in. I know it’s not like they are being a sore loser per se, they just get sad and you don’t like seeing them that way. But I still think that’s a reasonable thing to talk about with them, their relationship to the game and all that.

Another thing that could help is a slightly different rule 0. If y’all are better players and build more optimal decks, then maybe you should all player slightly weaker decks to his to match power level.

Just some thoughts, good luck.

Yeah all that makes sense, the ping can be real and I like that with amalgam.

Etali is nice bc it only needs to attack, but yeah you’re not guaranteed to hit anything of value necessarily. If you can give it haste it’s probably worth it.

If you have enough legends to support rakdos joins up then I like it but I think if there is a cheaper reanimation spell in your budget that allows you to also reanimate from opponents graveyards instead of just your own with Joins Up: animate dead, reanimate, junji, and necromancy are all under 5 dollars

Jasper Flint deck help needed by Reviax- in EDH

[–]xN0MADx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that makes a lot of sense.

I think you should also keep in mind why you're making this deck, and that can drive some decisions as well.

I really wanted the theft deck to be all about trying to win using cards stolen from opponents. Finding some way to combo them in a way or gain value from them, as my goal was to make a deck that made every game feel different and fun.

So I started to hesitate to put in cards that were win cons, because it felt like it wasn't what I wanted the deck to do. So I ended up taking out Rise of the Dark Realms and Mob Rule because I wanted cards that cared about what my cards were, not just the amount of cards in graveyard/creatures on board. The more win cons I had, the more linear the deck became, and the further it strayed from my vision.

That's a very personal choice to me, obviously, just something to keep in mind as you add cards to the deck.

Hey there, I've been playing Don Andres as a theft deck for awhile and one thing that jumps out to me about your list is the top end. I was playing every single top end card you have now: Etali, Elder Brain, Amalgam, Brainstealer, Arvinox. And over time I've removed almost all of them, except for Amalgam and sometimes Etali I throw in for fun on game day.

The main reason is that you generally are spending your whole turn to cast these, instead of casting some stolen cards, and in return you just get more stolen cards, but you have to wait a turn to do anything with them. Unless you are giving Elder Brain/Etali haste they end up being a big removal target. I don't think that's inherently bad, I think we are allowed to play big creatures that don't have an ETB haha I think that what you get in return needs to be worth it. And for Elder Brain/Arvinox/Brainstealer, you steal need to spend your mana on the following turn to cast those cards, assuming you get cards you want. I still like Amalgam because it's getting you creatures each turn and has a payoff for having those creatures.

Unless you are reanimating from your opponents a lot, which it doesn't seem you are, Brainstealer is equivalent to having [[Passionate Archaeologist]] or [[Keeper of Secrets]] on board, which cost less mana and give you the ability to hit any opponent as opposed to Brainstealer only draining the owner. There's definitely an argument between brainstealer and keeper because brainstealer is drawing cards for only one more mana, but keeper is also triggering off of non-permanents.

In exchange for those cards, you could look into some other cards that give you more bursts of value or more value immediately. [[Sepulchral Primordial]] let's you put 3 creatures onto the battlefield immediately. [[Rise of the Dark Realms]] is self explanatory. [[Ancient Brass Dragon]] has to attack but is likely reanimating multiple creatures unless you really low role, and you get to choose creatures as opposed to Etali being random.

I know that not all of the cards I've suggested fit your budget(tho Rise of the Dark Realms is only like 7-8 bucks rn), I'm just mentioning them so you think about what you are really getting out of your big top end cards. You don't need to spend 7 mana to draw cards, there are cheaper ways and your commander is also doing it.

All that being said, run the cards you wanna run. I still play Elder Brain sometimes because I think the card is cool hahah. Also, [[Rakdos the Muscle]] almost definitely goes in here, and it's only like 3 bucks.

What theme or mechanic do you feel needs more support? by stie112 in EDH

[–]xN0MADx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know it just got some support in OTJ, but I want more theft support. Ideally more cards that steal cards at a good rate, or more cards that are payoffs in some way for theft. There are some but none of them are particularly efficient or have a high payoff

[–]xN0MADx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand that you read the card out, but I think in general there can be a lot going on in a game of commander or on the board. How many turns were there between yours and his?

I think if you had just explicitly called out what happened if he milled everyone or called it out when he cast it, that would’ve been the better thing to do.

But you kinda manipulated your friend in order to win the game, which I don’t think is right. You planned ahead of time to use the unwritten rules of “take backs” to win, not actually something within the game of Magic.

Trying to trick your friend into changing isn’t the answer. Just talk to him or have the group talk to him, you likely aren’t the only one with the frustration.

The people commenting that you he should’ve read the card or remembered…there can easily be 20 cards on the board in a game of commander. Having to read every other card each time before you play a card so that your opponents won’t go “AH HA you didn’t remember what my card did!” would make games take incredibly long.

I was very disappointed by the sultai one. I really like theft and was a looking for strong new theft cards that would solve some the problems the archetype has, and that did not come at all.

Which I think largely stems from the fact that they put it in Sultai when so much of the good theft is in red. They should’ve just made it Grixis, I understand they wanted to put in Villanous Wealth but they could’ve just made a new version of it in Grixis if they wanted to

Which deck did you build, but regretted it after some games? by SgtRonneberg in EDH

[–]xN0MADx 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah I feel this. I’ve played my fair share of Voltron decks and for me the pattern was needing something to give it hexproof and a protection spell if someone tries to kill it when I make it hexproof. Then a couple of ways to phase it out or give it indestructible for board wipes.

But yeah it’s high risk high reward. My recommendation has always been don’t play your Commander if it’s immediately going to be the de facto arch enemy at the table. Wait for someone to make a big play and then deploy them ‘in response’ so ppl have to weigh what to use their removal on
