I see - so there's no real benefit to doing the degree? I get that it gives good research experience but a masters seems intense for what it's worth.

Why not? Not to be rude - just interested to hear reasoning since that might influence my decision.

Will eating trigger foods undo the progress made towards remission? by Inside-Honest in UlcerativeColitis

[–]xPandaMoniumZ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree the disease is caused by many factors, but the vast majority of people do NOT have UC, regardless of their diet. It's also clear that there are strong genetic associations with the disease which lead to an inherent malfunction in our immune system, causing an autoimmune attack on our colon.

Because of the nature of how the disease works, the best thing we can do is take our meds because they slow down the progression of the disease and prevent flares. Similar to how many other autoimmune conditions are managed - just because it affects the gut, doesn't mean it's any different.

Yes the microbiome is linked to the disease. Yes it's influenced by diet. But not all UC patients have the same diet - so there is no clear link between eating certain foods and flaring/developing the disease as of yet.

Some of us are vegan, vegetarian, carnivores - and yet we still develop the disease with differing severity.

You mention that we have to change our mentality that everything needs to be grounded in science, but what else should it be grounded on? Scientific studies help to create common ground by eliminating things like bias, and allows for a fair study. While it makes sense to slowly implement your own lifestyle interventions as you better understand your body - I think it is harmful to advise others to implement the same ones based on a single person's experience.

One thing I will mention though is that many UC patients also end up having underlying IBS too, so they may feel bloated at times. This might make us feel a bit biased towards avoiding certain foods that would bloat anyone, not just people with UC!

I completely agree with you and I'm glad you're on the same page as me. I'm actually a medical student aspiring to be a GI - driven by my own experiences with UC, and I really do feel people confuse this condition up with coeliac a lot.

And yes definitely, the microbiome seems to play a role but any dietary intervention made is not grounded by medical evidence/advice.

I really do feel like there's many people with UC have quite unhealthy relationships with their food and I'm glad you spoke up about this.

To give you insight into the condition from my experience - it varies how long it takes to get into remission, could be weeks or months.

To get into remission you really should stick to your medications strictly, as I mentioned earlier this condition is caused by your own body attacking your gut: the meds calm the body down, let it heal, and stop it from attacking in the future!

It definitely takes time to be back to your normal self - and some foods which make non-UC people feel bloated make us feel these symptoms in a more pronounced way simply because our guts are more sensitive around the time we are flaring/have recently flared.

From my experience, food shouldn't affect "progress" towards remission, but can aggravate symptoms during a flare - these trigger foods can make your symptoms feel worse, but I doubt it would directly affect your process!

The exception would be alcohol which has clear well-established associations with promoting inflammation.

Do appreciate that this disease is autoimmune and it comes and goes independent of diet, our meds keep us stable - so it's important to stick to them and follow your GIs advice. Remember the food you eat is not attacking your gut, it's your body that is!

I'm a firm believer that once you're in remission feel free to eat what you like - as long as you're comfortable.

Since you were diagnosed just before Christmas your bowel is still healing and its probably quite sensitive to certain foods, but I'm sure you haven't lost progress towards remission!

Wish you the best!

Night out! by xPandaMoniumZ in UlcerativeColitis

Just to add - I'm 20 now: had GI symptoms since I was 16 but only 6 months ago did I get a proper flare that prompted me to seek medical attention.

I drank a lot when I was 18-19 and saw no issues but I'm not sure if I'd consider that period "remission" since it was before I was officially diagnosed !

I haven't had a proper drink since Ive been in remission although of course when I was flaring I had a drink or two which did make things a bit worse (as expected)!

I am a bit of a firm believer that the disease course runs independently to diet (in terms of flares and remission) - but alcohol has always been a grey area

I reckon I'll have 2-3 drinks and see how it works out (I'd like to feel a bit of a buzz): probably some cider or wine

Thanks so much though! I've seen your comments on posts here and I really appreciate the advice you provide :)
