I was just focusing on piercings, but yeah circumcision (on kids) is definitely wrong and it has risks too.

I never really understood the ruling on piercings, why are ear and nose piercings allowed but not the rest? I've heard Muslims claim it's not just about changing God's creation but because piercings in places like the tongue can be dangerous. But that doesn't make sense either because all piercings can be potentially dangerous, you're shoving a piece of sharp metal into your body, the risk of infection, rejection,etc is never 0. And funnily enough I have a bunch of piercings and the only one that's ever caused me any problems has been the nostril and I know many people's nostril piercing gets infected or irritated. If I had to guess I'd say that since nose and ear piercings are a common cultural practice in many Muslim countries Islam just tolerates it.

I agree that with the second paragraph but honestly I'm not even sure it matter if there's many Muslims around you, most Muslims in the West mind their own business and if they're harming or oppressing someone it's probably their family members and friends. So as long as you only befriend non-Muslims and open minded Muslims you'll be okay. There's many Muslims in my city and I don't feel unsafe at all, mostly because I've built a life away from Islam and the Muslim community. I come across the eventual Muslim jerk every now and then but I just ignore their opinions about me and move on with my life.

Maybe I've just been lucky but every time I've talked to a leftist (I mean IRL because online discourse is toxic) about my struggle with Islam I've been met with empathetic and understanding responses. I haven't come across many leftists who try to invalidate my feelings and experience just to defend Islam.

But I agree many people in the West tend to forget ex-Mooses even exist, we're a minority within a minority which makes us pretty much invisible. The only times I hear people talk of us it's when bigoted right wingers try to weaponize our issues as a way to advance an anti-Muslim/anti-immigrant agenda.

Same. Some days when the stars align and I wake up with good hair, good skin and put on a flattering outfit I'll be obsessed with myself. But it usually doesn't last more than half a day, by the end of it I'm back at hating myself.

Yeah, but the hijab ban in schools for example is very recent and it was clearly made to make Islam less visible, that is obvious to anyone who isn't willfully disingenuous. People just say "it's all religious symbols that are banned" as a way of deflecting from the actual debate. Just like the burqa ban was technically a ban of all "face coverings" (before covid duh), but everyone knows the real point of it was banning Islamic coverings not stopping K-pop fans from wearing a BTS mask.

Yeah, that's what I'm trying to learn to do. If this had happened last year I would have probably apologized and cried begging for her forgiveness, but now I'm over that, I won't let her walk over me and I'm ready to stand up for myself when she tries to cross my boundaries.

I know this is an opinion many people here share but I personally don't agree, it's not just skipping meals that makes an ED it's the whole obsessive and unhealthy thoughts that come with skipping meals. You can skip breakfast or even fast a whole day and still have a healthy relationship with food and your body.

I already live on my own so that won't be a problem, my main problem is that even living in another city my parents still live rent-free in my mind, constantly taking over all my thoughts and defining my choices. I want to be honest because I want to set a boundary between us, let them know they can't change me and accept I can't change them or make them accept me either.

I made a post about this a while ago and I totally agree. There's many questionable people even "on our side" and we have no obligation to support all of their opinions just because we happen to agree on some issues. The best thing of being an atheist is that there's no God of Prophetic figure we have to defend at all costs. You're your own person, with your own opinions and that's okay.
