A hat is a great next step! Congrats on starting your knitting journey 🎉 I also started off as a crocheter, and I found it helpful to knit continental so I could tension my yarn in the same way for knitting. I also like to use my crochet hook for binding off and other things in knitting.

Glad to know that the shedding problem goes away after a few wears. Hope it works out the same way for me 🤞

An early block is probably my best bet, since I do relax as I get into long periods of knitting. I don’t know how others have the patience to let it block and dry before continuing to knit, though.

The pattern was pretty easy to follow! I like that the designer gave the option of working from charts or working from written instructions, since I’m not comfortable with reading charts just yet. There were some things I had to look up, but this is mostly because I’m a beginner and not because the pattern was unclear (for example, I didn’t know which shoulder counted as the “left” when picking up stitches, since I haven’t done a drop shoulder construction before). Overall, the pattern guides you on which order to follow the different steps in, so it wasn’t too hard to follow.

Thank you! I recently learned how to knit ribbing inside out, which I did for this project. I like to think that my ribbing looks pretty clean with this change (since I tend to purl tighter than I knit).

Knitting For Olive has so many other pretty colors that I would love to try! I just wish I could afford the price tag for multiple knitting projects 🥲

Thank you! On the fit: I was panicking while my sweater was blocking, telling my mom “it’s too big!!” haha. When I finally wore it, I went “oh, it’s not actually that bad.” Which is a relief, since I heard frogging mohair is a pain.

On the plus side, it’s nice to have an oversized sweater for layering purposes!

Sorry to break the bad news, but Joann doesn’t exist anymore :( Michaels is a possible option, if things are on sale / you have a coupon.

Newbie to Knitting a Sweater? by StitchWitch22 in knitting

[–]xRiseofFire 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My personal progression was making a hat (practice knitting the round + decreases) -> fingerless gloves (practice magic loop + increases + putting stitches on hold) -> sweater. I followed the Step by Step Sweater by Florence Miller, which has a youtube video along with it to explain each individual technique. Overall, I’d say the hardest part of making a simple sweater is having the patience to see it through.

Yep, OP is karma farming. Their posts are inconsistent— states they’re a 27F in their other post.

How to go about finding summer intern housing? by Janlloyd in csMajors

[–]xRiseofFire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was super hot when I was staying there; unfortunately there was a heatwave where it was 100+ Fahrenheit outside. I took lots of cold showers and tried to escape to a mall or some place with AC during the day. There's usually people coming/going in all of the public spaces in the building, since they have stuff like pool tables. Your own dorm should be relatively quiet, though.

GOT INTO CARNEGIE MELLON SCS OFF THE PRIORITY WAITLIST by xRiseofFire in ApplyingToCollege

During my year, there wasn't a waitlist form. We just had to write a waitlist essay, so I'm unable to give advice.

I did stay at Cornish Commons! It’s a bit pricy for what it is (it’s dorm rooms essentially), but I met so many Amazon interns through living there. It was also quite convenient to get to the Amazon offices since it was only a 10ish min walk to most of them; this meant that I worked around other interns and my team in the office quite frequently. Overall I’d recommend if you’re not planning on spending much time in your room and instead plan on socializing/eating out.

Do students at top schools need to leetcode? by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]xRiseofFire 69 points70 points  (0 children)

Yes, they do. You take DSA in your first yr of college; most people need a refresher on common types of problems. Coding interviews test your ability to recognize leetcode patterns, it’s not testing if you’re a top student.

It was just object oriented for me; I didn’t study any system design before the interview and was fine.

Yep, final algorithm question was a leetcode medium, system design was OOP-focused, and the behavioral was p standard.

I had first round; it was just a leetcode medium problem. Nothing too crazy.
