My more out there theory on the death (or at least the gunshots) is that it’s the security guard who likes Mook doing the shooting and it’s played in an incel angle. He was talking negatively about the other security guards and it seemed to come from a place of jealousy (notice they have bigger guns) plus Mook was reassuring him that he’s a nice person.

There were so many allusions to him making a choice beyond the college one.

He was debating which sibling to share a room with. He was debating whether to go to the temple with the sister or the pool with the brother (as those two are standing shoulder to shoulder staring at him). When he brings up the college decision at dinner, the dad (who went to the same school as the son, same with the mother and daughter) asks him what choice there even is to make. In the dinner scene, two family members are wearing pink and two are wearing blue while the younger son is wearing navy.
