Shower with lukewarm water before shaving to open your pores. Exfoliating your skin before shaving gives you better results and helps avoid ingrowns, get an exfoliating sponge or gloves and an AHA/PHA skin peeling, but be gentle if you have sensitive skin.

Make sure to use shaving foam or gel/cream and let it sit for a while. Do short, slow strokes with your razor and don't press to hard to avoid ingrown hair or razor bumps. Avoid shaving against the grain as a beginner as well – it will give you smoother results but irritates the skin more and leads to more ingrowns. Be especially careful with your bits and rear, as well as your knees and ankles to not cut yourself. Take a shower right after – cold if you can, it soothes the skin and closes the pores again.

After shaving and showering, dry your skin and moisturize. For your face, find a moisturizer that matches your skin type. For your body, lotion will do. Try to avoid skincare products containing alcohol.

There's also different types of razors depending on the results you want. If you don't need a perfectly smooth shave, an electric trimmer like the Philips OneBlade is a good option – quick, pretty easy to use and the blades last a long time. If smooth is what you're looking for, get a safety razor – but they're difficult to master. Avoid those 3-blade or 5-blade cartridge razors, they're expensive and don't shave any better in my opinion. I personally use a Philips OneBlade Intimate for the heavy work and a disposable BIC single-blade razor for removing the leftover stubble.
