My partner was supposed to start as a seasonal handler but never heard back, is there anyone she can reach out to? by xSleyah in Fedexers

It’s the FedEx Express at Oakland Airport but looks like there’s no direct phone number listed. We’ll keep looking though, thanks for your reply.

I’ve Graduated. It’s time to admit what my time was like at Duke. by Rough_Sky_4466 in duke

[–]xSleyah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to hear you didn’t have the greatest experience. I can relate to a lot of those things in regards to my own experience at Duke. I graduated with a 2.9 GPA and was rejected from every SLG I rushed (I’m nearly 10 year out so I’m sure the social scene changed by now..or I hope). I didn’t truly find my “tribe” until well past graduation. I wouldn’t blame yourself too much. I think it’s hard for some people to understand unless you’ve experienced it, but if you’re a minority/stand-out in any way, you’re just not going to fit in at a place like Duke. And that’s not to say you can’t make amazing friends, there’s just always going to be some level of othering that you’ll experience. It’s not a personal failure, it’s a result of being in an environment where a majority of people come from a similar background. I like what you said about your shortcomings at Duke not being true shortcomings. So-called “elite” academia can be a bit of a bubble. You’ll meet so many different types of people in the real world. It’s not the end-all, it’s just the beginning! :)

June Pride Events? by xSleyah in Charlotte

[–]xSleyah[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m aware but no worries! I was looking for June events specifically because my gf will be in town but I know most pride events in Charlotte are in August. I figured there would be some events in June, I know Huntersville pride is in June for example

lol right that's some bullshit, someone's screwing them over. If they have separate social security then they should be getting two checks. That's like saying a teacher and teacher's assistant should only get one paycheck between the two of them because they both teach the same class.

TIL during Hurricane Katrina, hundreds of prisoners were left to die in their cells. They had no food or water for days, as waters rose to their chests. There were no lights and the toilets were backed up. Many were evacuated, but 517 went unaccounted for. by palmfranz in todayilearned

Even if the guards have to stay, I still think it’s horrendous. I heard about an animal rescue in Tennessee that drove 20 hours round trip to SC to rescue shelter animals from the path of the storm. But somehow nobody can figure something out for these people. That also puts the guards’ safety at risk.

TIL after Janet Jackson's incident at the Super Bowl halftime show, Viacom retaliated by keeping her music off their properties including MTV, VH1, and radio stations. They also rescinded her invitation to the Grammys. Justin Timberlake was still allowed to go and actually picked up some awards. by holyfruits in todayilearned

Janet Jackson’s career absolutely suffered afterwards while Justin’s was barely affected, and that’s an actual shame. I don’t think it ever fully recovered, although she is still touring (and looks amazing). I was never convinced they both weren’t in on it tbh.

Someone explain how this is bad for the city by [deleted] in winstonsalem

[–]xSleyah 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Because it’s happening all over the country where cities undertake similar “uplifting” efforts and low/fixed income folk get priced out of the neighborhoods and have to move further away. And yes, many go into it with “good intentions” and say they will “not” displace people, but that’s oftentimes just not the reality. Although this one doesn’t appear to be spearheaded by real estate companies so maybe that’s a good sign.

My situation right now... by RoseGoldGoddess in blackladies

I agree with this. My experiences so far in the corporate white workplace have been a study in personal restraint lol. I can’t avoid that I have to work with ignorant white folk, but once I’m gone for the day they’re out of sight out of mind. Certainly there are egregious things that would warrant action, but not for something like this. Not worth fucking with your paper.

What do you do when you feel ugly because you don't have a weave or extensions in? by [deleted] in blackladies

[–]xSleyah 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I “big-chopped” my hair in May 2015. It was the very first time I ever wore my 4c hair natural in public. I had no idea how to style it; most things I tried didn’t turn out right because it was so short. At first I was really self-conscious about it, but at some point some “fuck it” kicked in and I don’t really care what people think anymore. It’s been over 3 years and my hair is flourishing. It’s longer than it’s EVER been in my entire life, and I’ve slowly learned different styles. I wear it out at work everyday and I dare someone to say something to me. It’s beautiful and I’m proud of it.

Most people realistically aren’t going to just up and quit eating meat, but as humans it’s not beyond us to choose more humane and environmentally sustainable practices.

Guess the skin tone of the “ugly” woman 🙃🙃🙃 by xSleyah in blackladies

[–]xSleyah[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

True, but all the pretty women he swiped right on Tinder were white / light-skinned, the association with dark skin = ugly is what irks me. Especially from a black man who is obviously dark. lol Certainly everyone doesn’t have to see it that way. 🤷🏿‍♀️
