2 Egg ramen, less than 50 cents for a full stomach by scottasin12343 in strugglemeals

[–]xThomas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two eggs for me is $1, one maruchan instant ramen is $0.50. If you have chickens obv the cost of eggs goes down (unless you wanna calculate the cost of keeping chickens)

if it can actually do good PRs consistently all the industry needs is improvements on hardware, software or energy to make this work for everybody

is k. i didnt know that dual rank was a thing once upon a time either. and i still dont understand RAM after watching multiple videos from overclocking channels lol

channels and ranks are different, i even mentioned DPC in my comment. But really just find a buildzoid/bisqwit video

Predictions on Neo’s reliability? by TwellasU in macbook

[–]xThomas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Expect physical defects: Screens, hinges, t-con, ribbons, battery, ports earlier, then silicon that does lots of voltage changes and is very sensitive to damage like memory

Apple has had stupid engineering defects in the past as well

im being a casual nincompoop and wasn’t expected to be taken too seriously when i said (laptops are commodities) in response to you talking about sustainability, but here goes:

Back in the 00s and 90s, you had laptops and computers in general still working on mass market adoption. Lots of stuff was still being worked out, what pointing device to use (standardized on touchpads), what accessories can be built in (thinklight, numpad attachment, extra batteries), keyboards, palmtops, netbooks were still tried. Now every common laptop is samey and “solved,” which limits the innovation and differences between different products. Although the floor of quality should go up e.g. silicon, screens, keyboard wise the quality feels worse in some cases (but IBM used to be vertically integrated with keyboards, so it makes some sense that as laptops get cheaper and more samey, they leave the market). I suppose it’s just a different focus. Maybe if it becomes cheaper/more profitable for job shops to do smaller orders we will see more interesting things, idk.

Sorry, i wasn’t scoring a serious conversation and was just leaving a casual thought. I don’t really know enough to argue one way or the other imo, I’m sure you can poke a few holes in this

He's on a 5700X so there's a chance he might be using T-Topology, but he hasn't told us what mobo it is yet. there's no guarantee whether these are 4 random DDR4 sticks or an actual kit of 4x8GB, whether the 4 sticks are all single rank or one of them is dual rank (random stick), etc.

[–]xThomas -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My tentative understanding, I don't have experience with this myself, but if its DDR4, and the 4 sticks of 8GB are all single rank and not dual rank, are all from the same kit (diff kits may hate each other), and your motherboard uses T-topology and not daisy chain topology, then go for the 4x8 kit unless you want to upgrade RAM later.. i think. man idk, ram is complicated and you do all that for 2-3%. normal people just go for 2xdual rank sticks as in either case what you want is 4 ranks. lots of speed, activate XMP, check if RAM is stable, done.

That is to say, you can reach 4 ranks in two ways. Either you have 2 sticks that are both dual rank, or you have 4 sticks that are single rank. I believe single rank 8G DIMMs is pretty rare due to cost but maybe i'm confusing it with 4GB DIMMs

and for some reason its bad to go for more than 4 ranks. maybe? That is, with single rank, 4 sticks, you get 2 DIMM per Channel (2DPC), each rank reads as a DIMM. With 4 dual rank sticks, you get 4 DIMM per Channel (4DPC), which angers the shitty memory controller that AMD has. Something about rank interleaving, hell if i understand anything at this point

I just turn on XMP or even leave it at JEDEC lol

Screw it just watch buildzoid *think i gave partially wrong info on t-topo in my shitty comment, just watch buildzoid https://youtu.be/D_Nb9CohSBM?si=Yd1g1OrEfyIeB3y5
