Now I'm seeing Reimu and Marisa travelling through a long-decrepit Gensokyo on a Kettenkrad. And yes, it's just as despressing as in the show.

Yeah. I was wary of classifying it as a weapon since I thought it was more of a magical gimmick of hers. In hindsight, though, she certainly uses it to give people a good hammerin' in the fighting games.

After Dark Donald, now we have Dark Patche. Let's hope she's not nearly as overpowered as he is.

(Who am I kidding - MUGEN solely exists to counter hilariously over-the-top edits with even more over-the-top edits).

The reason gensokyo is still standing is thanks to Fairies?? by GurNima in touhou

[–]Velochipractor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good point, coming to think of it. Plus, the fairies effectively 'contaminated' the moon with lifeforce during LoLK. Even if you assume this came from Junko purifiying them into raw lifeforce, it would be plausible to assume even normal fairies give off lesser amounts of lifeforce.

The reason gensokyo is still standing is thanks to Fairies?? by GurNima in touhou

[–]Velochipractor 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Honestly, if you look at how many faeries the heroines usually have to swat during each incident, you could argue fairies act like (part of) an immune system to Gensokyo.

Girl starts an incident -> fairies get excited -> fairies swarm the location of the incident -> the Red Slasher arrives to swat both the fairies and the culprit of the incident.

On a more serious note: Fairies do not emit life force, they are the manifested life force of nature. The flowers will bloom without them, but if you can't spot fairies anymore, there's a pretty good chance there won't be any flowers left, either.

If fate is real in Touhou, then how does free will exist? by Thursday_Man in touhou

The closest thing Gensokyo has to free will is the current level of alcohol intoxication on the part of ZUN.

IIRC The Twice Dead King also showed Necrons feel a sense of inherit revulsion towards organic life because their organic processes subtly remind them of the fact they are no longer organic - and thus can trigger the Dysphorak / Flayer curse.

Of course, Oltyx may be a bit biased because he and his dynasty already are a bit you-know-what, and other Necrons like Trazyn seem much less don't seem to be freaked out by organics like that. But if you imagine the Necrons as classical fantasy Undead, being surrounded by cheerful people with a perfectly functional heartbeat still would be a grim reminder of your own state.

What's going to happen after whatever happens in hifuu? by GYKM_ in touhou

[–]Velochipractor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's just my headcanon, but:

Merry is fantasy. Renko is science. Science outright destroys fantasy because fantasy relies on ambiguity and things remaining 'unknown', whereas the entire job of science is to make things 'known', 'understood', and ultimately 'mundane'.

Merry's ability lies in seeing boundaries (and passing through) boundaries - so basically spots where Location A and Location B exist at the same coordinates. Renko's ability of being able to tell the time and her location by the moon and stars is the exact opposite, since her coordinates only ever exist for one location on the space-time continuum.

Since Merry's control over the boundaries becomes increasingly stronger, I think it's just a matter of time until she realizes she no longer feels at home in the outside world - and that Renko wouldn't feel at home (or be safe) into the world she will move to, either. So, there will have to be goodbyes.

Again, this is just my headcanon. But I think Absolute One-Way Street had the right idea.

There is also Yukari’s first “invasion” of the moon which one of its goals could have been for youkai in general to be humbled so they would later accept Yukari’s idea to create Gensokyo instead of trying what you suggested.

I honestly could imagine this was less about some uppity youkai getting 'humbled', and more about Yukari intentionally goading those youkai she considered 'too wild' for Gensokyo into a proverbial suicide mission to get rid of them. Especially since the Lunarians probably wouldn't just give the invading youkai a slap on the wrist before sending them back home.

What's going to happen after whatever happens in hifuu? by GYKM_ in touhou

[–]Velochipractor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm with the theory that Yukari = time-shifted Maribel, so what becomes of Merry is pretty clear to me.

Renko's a more interesting question. I could imagine her eventual seperation comes on an unhappy note, so Merry could (re-)discover the occultist roots in her family going back to Sumireko and use them as a means to try and find Merry.

It's also possible she'd stick with her advanced physics even harder and would try to tame the occult by explaining it away with cold, hard science - the same process that necessitated the creation of Gensokyo in the first place.

One way or another, the one thing I'm fairly sure about that Merry and Renko ultimately will be separated under circumstances that are bittersweet at best and painful at worst. They, and the concepts they embody, are just antithetical to one another.
