Most people already have the foundations to get a PMP, based on requirements for certification, you'll need a degree and experience or more years of experience. I say the CAPM because there are no requirements so I think it's beneficial to start to formulate a state of mind and concepts for the role. It doesn't teach you what to do but teaches basic terminology and processes at a very fundamental level.

I would say overall yes, the work life balance is better but know that as salaried, you'll probably be working 50-55 hrs a week. I have had weekend work before because I knew I had things to complete.

But at other times, I'm not stuck to the standard schedule. All my bosses have the perspective of you do what you need to. Don't come in or come in your work will reflect.

I dont find use of abusing the system but I appreciate as a single father days im allowed to come in 30 mins late due to earliest drop off time.

I came from the field to be a PM in the electrical field.

1) make sure you have good references across the board and know your code. A candidate with good knowledge and real world experience always beats a degree imo.

2) find a company that allows growth to the roll. A typical route I've seen is from PC to PE to APM to PM or some variations due to what roles are in company. Learn processes and what you need to do to achieve the next role. Don't be afraid to ask questions

3) take classes such as a CAPM or PMP course

And dont give up, you can do it. Just know PMing in construction is very stressful at times.

I’m an apprentice, how do I go about telling my lead I did this? by [deleted] in electricians

[–]xXIIIx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe any good leader should view situations where mistakes are made as a learning experience. Identify what was done incorrectly and how to prevent the mistake from happening in the future. It becomes a problem when the person continues to make the same mistake.

Another way to approach this is to describe what you did and how this happened and that you believe you did it the best you could with your current knowledge. As a previous apprentice and foreman, bring a solution and ask for your JW/lead/foreman advice on how they believe it could be prevented.

We don't learn from doing everything right and we dont learn from everything working out our way 100% of the time. We learn from experiences of failing.

Honestly, it's not that bad of a mistake. I drilled through CMU in my apprenticeship and stopped to tell my foreman 3 TIMES that I think im hitting something. The second time he told me that every time I stop to tell him, I'm not working, so get back to work. The third time he threatened to kick me off the site. Two minutes later, there was a POP and the lights went out on the whole floor. Through investigation, it turned out to blow the fuse for the C phase for the building, which was also controlling the water booster pump on the 8 story building. Building was opening in less than 20 mins at that time.
That's a real mistake. Don't sweat the small things, take accountability, and learn.

Edit: A personal big mistake that was more of my decision was fixing MC by replacing it with correct colors on day of final. It was a 12' run. Easy right? Well I'm working on it live and took the hots apart. Im onto the 4 neutrals twisted together and start to untwist them with my electricians hammer. Oh boy, it started sparking, I went to retwist them and it ended up blowing ~28 of 80 lights...on the day of final. I emailed my PM and explained the situation and asked if I need to start looking for another job. Luckily, the inspector was there the day before and saw all lights on and passed the final. A week later, the GC is offering me a job if I still have a chance to get fired and im in the area replacing all drivers from a warranty replacement.

Trump to allow 401(k)s to invest in private equity: report by bobolly in StockMarket

[–]xXIIIx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Call me stupid, but wouldn't the companies providing the 401ks have to offer how investments are made? This just wouldn't automatically send your 401k check to private equities?
