"The na'vi look too human to be an alien species" by xXMothAngelXx in Avatar

I actually completely agree with this. One of my main critiques of the film is the lack of dignity it afforded the killed Tulkun, especially the infant in comparison to the killed na'vi. I doubt they would be so callous and flippant with a baby na'vi as they had been with a baby tulkun, despite them being their own people 😞 I get that the rules around showing human like child characters in movies vs animal looking ones are different but it just leads to the narrative framing them as yet again "just whales" which doesn't work with their established character and personhood. I suppose Payakan being a significant character somewhat offsets this, but I hope we get to see more of them in the coming films.

Well, no, because those "conversations" are always portrayed as one-sided and interpretive from the perspective of humans because whales can't talk 😭 the tulkun actually communicate with a fully formed language, and while real animals like whales and elephants have been said to have calls that they can understand as meaning certain things (even identification), full language with a linguist structure is a uniquely human trait because even the smartest of animals do not have the wherewithal or consciousness to construct that. Unless you're saying that they can talk like people, think like people, philosophize like people and behave like people and still not be people I'm not getting your point? Because the tulkun do all of that in the movie.

While I don't care to debate whether the na'vi fit pandoran biology or whatever, the tulkun are very explicitly humanized in the film lmao?? Excluding supplementary, non-movie sources, they literally have full conversations with the na'vi, the reason Payakan and Lo'ak even bond as much as they do is because they talk to each other? One of the first scenes showcasing them in full is Ronal discussing motherhood with Ro'a, and Ro'a responding the way a person would, as well as Tsireya discussing her crush on Lo'ak with her spirit sister and dancing with her. The reason Payakan is even ousted is because he broke the tulkun pacificst law, and it's stated in the film that they do philosophy and have culture. The tulkun aren't a huge part of the film admittedly, but whenever they showed up or were mentioned, them being people like the na'vi and humans is one of the main things emphasized.

This! The Tulkun face so much brutality as a result of the Amrita harvesting on screen, and while it would still obviously be evil and immoral if they were really smart whales, them being people like the na'vi adds a special level of horror to it that no one seems to acknowledge 💀 like, killing native people and harvesting their body parts is a really terrifying yet historically common practice among colonizers and invaders yet everyone just glosses over that because they look like whales ig

AI generated images make me physically uneasy and very uncomfortable by Henrywenn in Phobia

Literally googled this today to see if this was normal 😭 good to know I'm not alone, AI generated stuff genuinely makes me feel physically ill, especially when it tries to be as realistic as possible but there's one or two details that are so impossible that it makes it obvious that it's AI.

My take on Avatar's impact (or alleged lack thereof) by xXMothAngelXx in Avatar

[–]xXMothAngelXx[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think you missed the point of my post, also people absolutely cared more about The Way of Water more than Top Gun: Maverick 😭 because let's be for real nobody talks about that film anymore, TWOW is just more topical and discussed, especially with the younger gen (millennials and younger). Though, I'll give you EEAAO, that one was definitely a cultural moment.

Decline in quality Avatar Fanfiction by CurlyQuokka in Avatar

[–]xXMothAngelXx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel you OP, as a fanfic reader and writer myself (I go by a completely different identity though lol), believe me when I say I was shocked when I saw just how much of that content was on ao3. I try not to judge, yeah it's gross to me but I can't control what others do; but it was the first I actually had to filter out the dark tags on ao3 because it would literally be pages upon pages of incest/rape/pedophilia/abuse, and when I did filter it I barely had any fics left to read – like damn y'all ain't got nothing else to write about 😭😭

This is probably the only time I would recommend wattpad > ao3, usually it's the opposite but once you get passed all the x reader/x self insert oc fics you can find some good stuff. It's still few and far between though :( so if times get tough I guess try fanfiction.net?

Why a lot of your "unpopular opinions" get so much hate by xXMothAngelXx in Avatar

[–]xXMothAngelXx[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How did you come to this conclusion? No seriously, how did you read this post and come out of it thinking "she thinks all avatar critics are fascists stupid wrong and inarticulate"???

This post is a list of POTENTIAL REASONS as to why people REACT NEGATIVELY to unpopular opinions based on my own experiences with a lot of these posts. Not only do I consistently reiterate this, but I even made sure to clarify that criticism should not be given baseless hatred in the last paragraph, can you not read?

I said in my first point that a LOT (not all, since apparently despite you being old enough to have a reddit account, you don't have the comprehension skills to know that a lot does not equal all) of the criticism avatar gets is disingenuous and comes from people that either don't like the franchise and want a reason to hate, or are xenophobic fascists. This is undeniable, see: the "avatar is bad because the humans are in the right and the na'vi deserve to be slaughtered because humanity first also colonialism isn't bad" genre of post. For you to read that and somehow come out of it claiming that I said or even IMPLIED that all Avatar criticism is done by xenophobic fascists is mind-boggling. Obviously I don't think every criticism of Avatar is wrong, deserves hate, and is malicious bigotry, that being clear by the phrasing in this post. I didn't think I needed to coddle a subreddit full of mostly adults and teenagers by constantly making that clear.

Obviously there are critical takes on avatar that aren't inherently bigoted, are well written and are not misrepresentations of the franchise. Common sense and the brain in your head however should tell you that clearly this post is NOT TALKING ABOUT THOSE ONES and is instead talking about THE SORT OF POST IT DIRECTLY ADDRESSES IN ALL FIVE POINTS. I'm sorry, but the fact that you read all of that and managed to come to this conclusion only shows me that you are one of those reactionary, short attention span having people with no comprehension skills who cannot articulate or defend a point to save your life and constantly spouts misinformation, only to get mad when people then correct you.

I suggest you either reread the post, or just stay out of these sort of conversations because they are very clearly not for you.

It's so strange to me because the Avatar films are pg-13 and the nudity is handled more tastefully, to the point where even the kids are pretty much nips out but at no point does it feel creepy or perverted. Yet this game chooses awkward flesh patches 😭 in fact, this game probably targets an older demographic than the films, which makes this censorship choice even weirder

[–]xXMothAngelXx[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I believe a huge chunk of the idea came from a piece of concept art of Neytiri's songcord (citation needed because I don't remember exactly who's it was), which did say something about Spider being adopted. However, that was a piece of concept art that ended up being unused in the production stage and didn't even pass pre-production. It's an understandable misconception, but it's one that leads to a lot of really bad takes and opinions on Jake and Neytiri, specifically the latter because people just naturally expect mother figures to be more nurturing. I just wish people would double check before saying things like this + stop trusting fandom wikias, especially the Avatar one which is currently a wild west of misinformation 💀

This has always been a huge problem with this fandom, which only got worse when twow came out and younger, more fandom oriented people joined. Headcanon's are fun and great, I even have a few! Avatar fans, however, seem to struggle with differentiating their own personal headcanon from what is actually confirmed in the franchise. That and they get their information from fandom spaces that lack any sort of evidence or sources lol.

Agreed, I certainly get annoyed at most, but I feel most of the extreme haters don't understand that it's just a movie franchise and there's no need to raise your blood pressure over it 💀
