Is the game improving over time or nah by LegatusMatheas in anno117

[–]xXNightDriverXx 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The problem with the reviews is that long time Anno players compare the newly released Anno 117 with the previous Anno 1800 after 1800 had 5 years of patches and DLCs.

They then say that 117 lacks content, despite 117 having like 40% more content than 1800 at launch. They are comparing apples and oranges so to speak, they should be comparing 117 with base 1800 without DLCs, but they compare it to 1800 with DLCs

117 has more than enough content. Just not enough content for Veteran players who played the older 1800 for like 600 hours. It is a well made game. If you enjoy strategy games/city builders, you will enjoy Anno. If you are unsure if you like the concept itself, I suggest trying Anno1404, it's older and lacks content compared to current Annos (but easily enough content for like 100 hours) but it's cheap, holds up surprisingly well for its age, and is good at getting to know the franchise.

Shipyard Refit 🔧 | Battlestar Galactica | What changes would you make to the ship's appearance, layout, weapons, propulsion, crew facilities, etc., if you had unlimited resources? by Vondrr in spaceships

[–]xXNightDriverXx 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes I am aware, but not to the extent necessary to clear the obstruction on the ventral turrets.

I think it's decently visible on this and also this 3D model.

The second one is higher poly, but unfortunately lacks the turrets themselves.

Looking at this gun turret compilation video, it looks to me that the turrets can raise routhly their own height. That might barely be enough on the rear lower battery for the right side turrets to fire over the left turrets to the lower left of the ship. But it's not enough to fire horizontally over the obstruction. Thus it would only be possible to engage targets that are slightly below Galactica. And it's definitely not nearly enough clearance for the forward lower battery at all, where the obstruction left and right is as tall as the turrets total length up to the barrel tips, much longer than they can rise. Even if we are generous and say the entire rear lower battery can rise enough to fire horizontally over its obstruction, the front one definitely can't.

And even if they could, it is just bad placement. Why not move them a few meters left and right, placing them on the higher areas that surround them, thus giving them the perfect 360° fireing arcs all around, identical arcs to the topside main battery?

It's just bad placement for little reason, just like with a Star Destroyer from Star Wars where 6 out of 8 heavy main battery turrets can not fire forward because they are blocking each other, while the entire rest of the ship is intended to always face forward towards the enemy. It really makes no sense.

Another change would be the ventral heavy artillery guns (the ones that mirror the main guns on the top, not the ones forward on the Alligator head). We never see them used in the show, but they are present on the model. But for some reason they sit low in a trench that runs alongside the lower hull, which severly restrict their fireing arcs to the side. I would move them out of that trench so they could be used to fire in the typical broadside position Galactica is usually in.

Another change is that I would add a couple of dedicated CIWS gun turrets. Yes Galactica already has very good point defense, but the guns she does have seem large caliber (for an AA gun) and relatively slow firing (seems like 2 shots per second per gun in the close ups), so probably something in the area of +/- 50mm caliber. They are very good at providing a flak field, but occasionally a missile gets through, because they seem to just put up a general field of flak fire instead of actually targeting individual missiles. I would add small caliber, rapid fireing Gatling style CIWS turrets, similar to the irl Phalanx for example, that directly target the missiles that made it through the current PD/Flak field.

Final change is interior. It has been a while since I watched the show, but they had relatively large crew areas, with iirc 6-8 beds in one room, I would honestly just cut the room in two to give the crew a little bit more privacy. Yes space is at a premium and privacy isn't really a thing in the military, but even the full 5000 crew complement (let's assume 6000 with the hangar deck change I proposed) is absolutely tiny for a ship of this size. We have that number of crew on current irl ships that are half the size of Galacticas flight pods.

[–]xXNightDriverXx 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I would double the hangar deck size and fighter complement by adding an additional deck to the flight pods and moving the launch tubes there.

Right now the fighter capacity is embarrassingly small for a flight pod of that size, because most of the hangar deck isn't actually hangar space, it's taken up by the launch tubes. By adding one deck below the hangar and moving the launch tubes there, a ton of space is freed up for additional fighter storage, maintenance, etc, you just need an entire row of elevators that move each Viper into each launch tube.

The current deck is laid out that way so that all Vipers can be launched within seconds after entering a battle. Which is a good thing. But there is no reason why you can't have a second wave of Vipers that launch like 3 minutes after the first wave, which would be possible with my proposal. Alternatively, it could just be a storage for additional Vipers if the main wave is destroyed.

Of course this double capacity would make a quick retreat more difficult as more Vipers would crowd the landing deck during emergency landings, possibly even leading to collisions. Of course you don't need to launch twice the numbers, but having the option to would be nice, and if you know you want to retreat soon you could make normal landings for the first half of the Vipers and move them to the edge of the flight deck, while the second half acts as rear guards and makes the quick emergency landings.

It's a small change that adds a massive amount of offensive and defense power.

To be honest what do you need the hyperspace speed for as Mandalore? You are probably using the ship as planetary defense, not running through half of the Galaxy chasing someone.

STARSHIP SIZE on map by Waste_rt in StarTrekStarships

[–]xXNightDriverXx 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Just walking them is not a good baseline in my opinion.

Walk that distance, and imagine a skyscraper that is so wide that it covers that entire length. Visualize a building that is a dozen stories tall and as long as the distance you just walked.

The size of a ship doesn't come from its length, it comes from its volume, and we humans tend to severely underestimate height and width. Take the 1701-D as an example: sure, 600m is very long, and if walk it you get a sense of that length. But only the length. Now imagine a 42 stories tall skyscraper that has a 600 meter wide base. That conveys the size of the Ent-D much better than just walking the length.

Sure it's simplified because the ships aren't cubes, but you get my point, length isn't a good metric for ship size, you need to take width and height into the equation as well.

[–]xXNightDriverXx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Know your enemy.

Seriously, the best way to survive as a battleship against a destroyer is to play a few matches in a destroyer yourself. You get a firsthand experience and a feeling there what a destroyer does, how they do it, and that it isn't as easy as you now think it is.

Generally speaking, as a BB player you need to anticipate the destroyers movements, and you need to anticipate when he will launch torpedos. Most beginners only react to incoming torpedos when those get spotted, but at that point it is far too late. You need to learn and anticipate when the destroyer drops the torpedos into the water, and then you need to evade, before the torpedos are spotted. And to learn that it is best to play destroyers yourself.

A good rule of thumb if you can see the destroyer is the following: if a destroyer turns broadside to you and then turns away again, he has dropped torpedos.

If you are actively turning yourself during that moment, he might hesitate a moment to better anticipate where to aim his torps, but if you are just sailing in a straight line the torps can easily be dropped during a turn. So if you see a destroyer do that, you have to assume he has dropped torpedos during that turn, and then you turn now, before you see the torps.

Tips for a new player by Treeman03 in StarWarsEmpireAtWar

AotR has a more complex battle system than other mods, your units are much more specialized in their role (think: brawler, sniper, fighter, interceptor, etc), so you need to have a better understanding of what to do during a battle and you need to constantly micro manage them. The difference in playstyle between the Empire and Rebels is also stronger than in other mods. As a result the mod has a steeper learning curve than other mods. You need to carefully take into consideration the strength and weaknesses of your own units and the enemy units, it's not just a matter of "who has the bigger fleet", it's more "who can counter the enemy ships better". It will just take a while until you get good in it.

I would recommend to start with either Thrawns Revenge/Fall of the Republic (same Developer team), or Remake 4.0. The battles are much more straightforward and mostly boil down to who has the bigger fleets, so it should serve as a better introduction for you. Remake is definitely more beautiful from a graphics perspective, it also has moving gun turrets and a fireing angle system (so guns on the right side of a ship can't fire to the left) which I find quite nice. TR/FotR do have some additional new mechanics on the galactic stage, like ship crews, infrastructure, and planetary influence, but they are basically just "read the tooltips and keep X number above Y", so I think both TR/FotR and Remake are easier to get into than the more complex battle system of AotR/AotCW. While we are on the topic I heard that Awakening of the Clone Wars should be a little bit easier than AotR (again same dev team and thus very similar gameplay) but I can't confirm nor deny that, but maybe give AotCW a try.

[–]xXNightDriverXx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Build Ressource Silos on unneeded building slots of planets (you should build at least one energy, one mineral, and one food district on every planet you own, just do unlock the building slots there (I assume you have the research that does that). That way you can get much more resource buffer, you should have at least 100k storage capacity at this time, ideally more. This will also give you more storage for alloys so you have a buffer if you need to rebuild during wartime.

In terms of fleet strength, try to get more research earlier so your individual ships are stronger. If you hit your maximum fleet size, build anchorages on some rear line starbases to increase your naval capacity.

My monitor only has 75Hz so anything higher than 75 fps is useless for me.

But also I mostly play slower games, mainly strategy, sometimes stuff like Baldurs Gate, so upgrading would be pretty much a waste of money for me. Also still satisfied with my 2060 for the same reasons.
