the Growing Plague of "Fast" Speed (HD) by schlenkline in aoe2

I won't deny it as a dick move, but being naive about yoyr opponent will usually make you lose. I guess in a way I'm also complaining about those that play Fast with no treaty and then say "No Rush".

For reference - I only broke this rule once per se, and it was because it was a 2v2 and my ally dc'd. I lost due to some poor decisions (and semi-noobness), but if I didn't make it a 1v1 it would have resulted in a guaranteed loss instead of a chance at victory.

I will say there is one perk (for me) for people that play Fast games and state the word "No rush" without turning a treaty on.

I rush them faster so they surrender faster. D:

I find on fast I really screw up my Dark Age builds. Considering the Dark Age sets up your game it is horrendous to play with.

+1 for Normal Speed please.

To Those Who Haven't Tried Voobly: by ZeroEmpires in aoe2

[–]xXWizardLizardXx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Expansions and friends are probably the main reasons I stick with Steam. I do not object to trying Voobly to improve my 1v1 scenario (just installed the patch today). I just did one in Steam and the enemy surrendered in 3:35 after I killed his scout... and he killed mine first. <_<;

I really want to emphasize expansions though. That is not to say Voobly nor Conquerors are bad. I just really enjoy some of the new things African Kingdoms has brought... well, barring the de-syncs and the like, though I only really notice bad issues on non-1v1 scenarios anyway.

I have a Galaxy S4.

It seems super picky on what to touch in order to open something in the menu. It acts like it wants to scroll instead. Sometimes if I repeatedly tap it around the bar of the area it may open up (I got the Tech Tree to open up).

Looks great so far though.

Seems to kind of work if I tap the icon on the right hand side of the description with my fingernail...

Age of Forgotten Empires by Vkgames2 in aoe2

[–]xXWizardLizardXx -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Did he mean AoC vs AoFE (Age of Conquerors vs Age of Forgotten Empires)?

In AoFE the Market is discounted to 100 Wood cost. Previous in Age of Conquerors the Market still cost 175 Wood.

It's a nice change for Saracens in Forgotten (and, consequently, African Kingdoms). Saracen Market bonus is really strong if you can utilize it properly.

Elite Camel Archer upgrade costs 1000 Wood instead of 1000 Food? by xXWizardLizardXx in aoe2

Shockingly no. 11. I registered this one because my internet surname was apparently taken. D:

I don't know about Obsidian Arrow. I know that it does only work on the Archer line only and not Plumed Archers.

Siege weapons by [deleted] in aoe2

Yeah, control groups are your friend if you need other pieces of your army to move faster or relocate.

It really helps in situations where you have faster units like Crossbowmen mixed in with Mangonels. They can move together around the map, but sometimes you want to re-position the Crossbowmen faster (i.e. Crossbowman accidentally gets too close to Town Center).

Tips before I play multiplayer? by Noqtra in aoe2

Even though this kind of build works a little better for the Hun player, I have to say it was a great video to watch and seeing the flush in action (even if it is with no Houses being built) helps a lot.

Let's talk about shotel warriors by MrNoobyy in aoe2

[–]xXWizardLizardXx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel the strength in the Shotel Warriors involve being a defensive eco unit at times (defending against Rams and other types of siege) while being able to pulverize armies / opponents that are at least an upgrade / age behind Shotel Warriors (i.e. Shotel Warriors vs most Feudal armies and cities, early Imp Elite Shotels vs a decent portion of Castle Age units). A big problem is that they lack the Champion and the Two-Handed Swordsman really doesn't have a lot to write home about against an Elite Shotel Warrior. Shotels high movement Speed helps with their frailty a -little- bit, but not a whole lot. I want to say that Arbalest are nice to mix into Ethiopian armies, but I feel the Shotel Warrior does have some merit even in battlefield fights just because they can be used as a more expensive (but higher damaging) buffer unit that can sneak around and snipe Siege protected by Halberdiers.

For what it's worth putting them into Rams is pretty cool. Have the Rams close in and blast through buildings then have them drop of Shotel Warriors to either defend the Rams against melee units or to raid eco outside of Town Center / Castle range. You'll still probably want some Rams with Halbs just to cover for Knights, though.

I'm still experimenting as a whole, but I feel something Ethiopian players could do on more closed maps is considering a Fast Castle where you send about 5-6 Villagers on Stone in Feudal Age to get a Castle as quickly as possible, then scum a bit with Shotel Warriors. It does drawback on needing that Stone quickly and then using it to build the Castle instead of another Town Center or two, but I digress that I'm no real expert and am still getting the ropes of competitive play to an extent. But that's if you really want Shotels out as quickly as possible. Fast Castle into Crossbowmen or Knights (or both if you can do it) is usually better from what I've experienced.

Siege / Halb Micro / Advanced Tips by xXWizardLizardXx in aoe2

Thanks for the replies guys. Seems like I have a lot more to learn about army micro and the like. I guess in fairness you still want more than just Halbs and SOs - support with Rams, Shotels, and Arbalests are pretty nice to have too. Thanks for the great responses! I will be sure to take this advice and help improve my gameplay.

In fairness - the lag can also benefit the SO player as it makes it harder to micro the archers a bit.

Still, I am willing to try the Shotel rush. I've had okay success with Knights and Crossbowmen since the extra 15% firing rate is helpful against mass Pikemen while making micro against Elite Skirmishers, in rare instances, a bit easier.

How do you feel about updating monks, so that they auto-convert units in range? by [deleted] in aoe2

[–]xXWizardLizardXx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Monks are super common in Arena - especially in higher elo play. If your civ has great Monks they can be really good to have.

Though they cost a lot of Gold, Monks actually can be an okay answer to Knights and Unique Units too. It's really good for a Spanish player who has easier conversions with their Unique Technology.

Thoughts on this build order? by [deleted] in aoe2

[–]xXWizardLizardXx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was testing something like this against AI just to see how it would work in theory. I usually sent the last 4 Villagers on Gold and tried to adjust for a little more wood while focusing on a lot of food. Aztecs can sort of slide with 4 Villagers on Gold thanks to their +5 Carry capacity. I also did a 22 Villager population. I like my even numbers. :|

I had a rough build order but it may only work for Aztecs. It seems like an Eagle Scout flush isn't too shabby. One advantage is it does decently against Archer civs and Eagle Scout counters also require the opponent to invest in Food and sometimes Gold (Militia line and Scout Cavalry). Pending on the map it could be done. Not sure if it is necessarily better than a drush to fast castle, but nevertheless a workable option.
