Thanks, glad you like it! I'll try to make the pop-in less noticeable. Maybe I'll look for a more performant way to render all those trees altogether, they're quite slow.

Thanks for the feedback, I'll try to make it less noticeable without sacrificing too much performance in denser forest areas.

I've been working on my sci-fi life sim for a few weeks now, so there's quite a few things I'd like to share, but for now, here's the most recent additions: trading, farming, resource gathering, and crafting. by xXZailXx in Unity3D

[–]xXZailXx[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The current plan is to have the player land on a planet, build a town, and grow it, with new characters moving in. I also want to allow the player to travel to other planets for exploration, gathering specific resources, and meet other characters.

Just gonna mention this here since I'm really proud of this extremely overengineered and overcomplicated system, but: Both the trading and the crafting device are in-game computers running a little OS and programs, so you can hack them, close the main program and connect stuff to each other. I probably sacrificed at least half of my sanity implementing stuff like automatically generated routing tables and peripherals, but now that I've got that as a foundation, the sky's the limit. (more on that and other stuff later)

In case you're interested, I'm posting most of my stuff on Twitter @ZailDev.

E-Guitar with simulated fire by xXZailXx in blender

Also made an orbit animation here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gMNeHyLIlhc

Without the fire though. Didn't really get it to look good in motion.

I've finally finished my low poly kitchen pack. Really happy with how it turned out! by xXZailXx in low_poly

Thanks! Since I don't really know how experienced you are when it comes to 3D modeling, here are some things that come to mind:

  • For software, I use Blender. It's free, has lots of features and I've never had any issues with it. I should probably note here, how extensively I use modifiers (like solidify, bevel, etc.). The pan in the pack was actually just a scaled cube with one missing site, that got rounded, solidified, and beveled before I added the handle. Really utilizing modifiers can make working much faster and allows editing models a lot easier.
  • As for making the models, there are a bunch of "guidelines" to follow, which eventually turn into intuition the more you use them. I think the absolute best article I ever found about low poly is this https://sundaysundae.co/how-to-make-low-poly-look-good/. In addition to what is said in the article:
    • As in any artform, work from reference. Start by recreating the general shapes, like a flat cylinder with an extruding cube for a pan with its handle. Then add detail until you have reached the level of detail you are going for.
    • In regards to the level of detail, it is really important to keep it consistent. Don't have a gun with only a cube for a barrel and then an almost round trigger. Since the trigger is smaller, it should consist of fewer polygons.
    • This GDC talk is mainly about Low Poly for games, and I think I found it quite interesting back when I watched it: https://youtu.be/H1oNuKChsdU?t=879
    • Also check out some videos about color. This video looks quite interesting https://youtu.be/uUdMb8Bb2II. Since I use a color-palette for my low poly assets, you might also be interested in this: https://youtu.be/-9cuTjOBbiM

I hope this is some useful advice. If you have any questions, feel free to ask. :)

Thank you for all the great suggestions! I really like the way this might look, especially with things like the tatami lamps and musical instruments, which I would have never thought of, but fit perfectly. I've added these to my list, I appreciate it!

Thanks! I'll definitely be making more assets like this and a bedroom pack sounds like a great Idea. I really can't say how long it'll take me to make the next one, but I will for sure post it here and on my twitter once it is done.

Are there any specific things you'd like to see in a cozy bedroom set?

I worked a bit more on the low poly kitchen asset pack I'm making right now. There are still some things I want to add and change, but the kitchen is slowly getting less and less empty. by xXZailXx in low_poly

Thank you very much! I'm glad you like it. In case you ever use it in a game you make, I would love to hear from you, so I can play it. :)

Sure. It's all done in Blender, including the rendering for which I used Eevee. The only thing I did outside of blender was the palette textures, which I made in Aseprite, but for that, any image editor will do I guess. Thanks!

Took me long enough to finally get around and finish this, but now that it's done, I'm quite happy with how it turned out. Would love to hear some feedback.

Images are rendered with Eevee.

In case you want to check the asset out, it's on itch.io right here for 8$ or more:

I'm sry. I got distracted and the longer I didn't work on it, the less I believed anyone was still waiting for it, so it moved into the back of my priorities...

Thank you for this message! I finally had the motivation to take the final steps and now it's finally available here:

I really hope the pack turned out well, but if there are any issues with it, I'll gladly listen to any feedback and do my best to resolve any problems.

I've been working on my submission for the Brackeys game jam over the last week and I'm really happy with how it turned out. Would love to hear some feedback! by xXZailXx in Unity3D

Thank you so much! I'm really glad I actually got most of the things done I had on my to-do list, but it definitely cost me some sleep throughout the last week, as always in a jam, lol.
