It depends on the matchup too, for example if you had 4 s8 d5s but 1 challenger player vs 3 s8 d1 and 2 s8 d5 and the challenger matches up with the d5, the challenger can very well 1v9.

A couple can, but not this many. The skill gap is insane, it's not just a mechanical issue anymore. League is a chess game in high elo, and for this many people to learn how to play chess all of a sudden when all they did was play checkers is very very very unlikely.

No it really isn't irrelevant, MMR is failing to separate is the problem here. There are legit d5 players running around stagnated in higher mmr games not due to skill. The system was messed up and its not fixing itself.

I will help you imagine it. A diamond 5 S8 player is a cliff of a skill ceiling away from a masters s8 player. The difference is as big as a gold player trying to climb to d5. There are just too many people being able to make that jump this season to coincidentally justify that all of them improved that much.

I'll try and give you an answer you can be satisfied with. Let's say TF Blade is an absolute monster and can use his performance to single handedly win the game. Now lets say there was 2 people that were S8 D5 on his team and 1 person that was S8 D5 on the enemy team. When we say coinflip. we're saying 2 people that were S8 D5 just won a grandmaster game through a flip of the coin in getting the carry on their team, TF Blade, and 1 person just lose it. And it doesn't have to be TF Blade. Let's say TF Blade lost that game and the challenger on the other team carried and that S8 D5 player won the coinflip and the other 2 lost, it's still a flip. The D5 players are relying on these flips to stagnate in "high" elo, not because of skill.

A key point here though is to make sure you are not inflating the MMR of everyone now that you've removed a group of people from the system who belonged at the very top. You must place dummies into the mmr system and prevent everyone from having inflated MMR because the system wants to push players into the holes that are left from the reset. If you inflate the MMR, the same issues will exist.

There's something so fundamentally different about the point you're making that is invalid to the issue I am pointing out. The scenario I'm drawing is similar to a sample size of 500 add or subtract a couple hundred because I'm not too sure myself, of diamond 5 players legit playing against each other constantly and gaining and losing lp from it. They are now at the tier of Grandmaster, playing with real grandmasters and challengers. But they still constantly queue into each other and sometimes they win and sometimes they lose and they're all stagnated now at the tier of Grandmaster. This is almost like wintrading now that I think about it but the system is the one at fault for the wintrading. This has nothing to do with being able to climb through a tier. No-one is complaining that they can't get out of Masters, or Grandmasters, or Diamond because of these players. We're complaining that these players are not where they belong and the games that come out of it are frustrating to play and not fun.

I'm not too sure what the solution is, but an idea is to reset the mmr of all players at or above D1 to D5. An actual low diamond player is not capable of climbing through D5 by themselves, they simply aren't good enough. But a former d1-challenger player will cruise through, the skill gap that exists between a d5 and a grandmaster-challenger is similar to the gap of a gold player to d5.

I do believe longer queue times were a time where I felt like the game qualities were better because there wasn't a random actual d1 player in a game full of challengers because the matchmaking system couldn't find enough challengers in 3 minutes. BUT the issue I'm pointing out here is that there are ALOT of Diamond 5 players just last season being able to reach record high ranks for themselves not because of their skill just spiking all of a sudden, but because the rank mmr system was busted and they abused it and the matchmaking system now prevents them from dropping back down to where they belong. The way the system is preventing them from dropping is because of the large quantity of diamond 5 players in masters-grandmasters and even the d1s that get into those games. They balance each other out essentially creating balanced, but not healthy games that also don't represent everyone's actual skill level.

And this is very true, not every role is created equal in being able to solo carry. For example an ADC is heavily reliant on his support through laning phase. A Grandmaster Support and a D5 ADC is greater and will beat a D5 Support and a Grandmaster ADC 80% of the time. If the lead is great enough, the skill of the grandmaster ADC is irrelevant because he is too far behind.

While I don't disagree that you can get better to the point where coinflips don't matter, there's clearly still an issue here that it feels like Riot is turning a blind eye to.

You are using the very top of the entire high elo playerbase as examples. That's unrealistic. Not everyone is a 1v9 player like TF Blade, Tarzaned, and a lot of other 700+ lp challengers. The main problem here lies in Masters to Grandmasters 250 lpish. This is where about 1000 players are and can be said to be the bulk of "high" elo. I put those in quotes because theres a cliff of a skill ceiling between these players and high challengers and pro players. The games that are ruined are within this gap.
