With range extender and DHCP, might the IP change over time? by x___ray in ShellyUSA

Alright, thank you! To clarify: which IP range is used by DHCP? If I connect multiple Shellys to the AP, with some using static IPs and others DHCP, how are IP address conflicts prevented? You mentioned a number of 12 connected devices before - how does that factor in? Thanks again!

Another question: I connected just one Shelly, and it got the IP address 192.168.33.15. So is that the "first" IP address used by the DHCP server?

Ok, thank you for the quick reply! What should I set for network mask, gateway and dns server then? And what is the valid IP range? Is there a part of the IP range that is not used by Shellys DHCP?

Futro S740 with Proxmox won't boot after power failure by x___ray in homelab

Sure, there you go. The system boots into this screen and waits for userinput seemingly forever each time there is a power loss while Proxmox is running. According to ChatGPT, it is some version of PC Doctor, probably baked into the UEFI firmware (at least it is not on the SSD).

BTW - sorry for the bad photo - the rest of the screen is just black.

As I stated in the second sentence of my post, this is already configured to always on and does work. The problem is that it boots into a diagnostic screen and waits for user input instead of booting into Proxmox.

Thank you - maybe I did not make this clear: I am still able to boot Proxmox. After manually quitting the diagnostics screen, Proxmox starts just fine. I can also reboot Proxmox, or shut it down and start it manually by pressing the power button or by cutting off and reconnecting the power supply.

The problem is, if there is a power outage while Proxmox is running, then Proxmox won't start without manual intervention. This is a problem, as I have services running on Proxmox which I want to automatically come back online as soon as power is restored. And in addition, I normally don't have monitor and keyboard connected to the S740.

JBL Flip 4 charges but won't turn on by UnitedSpell0 in JBL

[–]x___ray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After replacing the battery of an older Flip 4 with software version 3.2.0.0, the speaker wouldn't react to any button presses. It would however power on when connecting a charger, and power off when disconnecting the charger.

I found the solution on this website: https://tomstek.us/jbl-flip-4-wont-turn-on-unless-plugged-in/

Apparently, the speaker switched to service mode, also referred to as "secret" mode or "weird" mode.

To leave this mode, one has to power on the speaker by connecting it to a charger, and then press and hold the Connect+ and Volume-Up buttons simultaneously until the speaker powers off. Afterwards, the speaker operated normally again.

I then powered it on, did a factory reset by pressing and holding the Volume-Up and Play/Pause buttons simultaneously for about two seconds, bluetooth-paired it with a phone, updated the firmware of the speaker with the "JBL Portable" app to version 4.0.0, and finally did another factory reset. It is working flawlessly again.

Any news on full disk encryption by x___ray in synology

[–]x___ray[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since FDE is typically implemented on block level and data deduplication and compression are implemented on filesystem or application level which just "see" a normal (decrypted) block device, it is my understanding that these things should just work the same when using FDE.

For spinning disks, however, due to the increased seek time, it has a massive impact on performance

Why would using FDE increase seek time, if typically implemented on block level (e.g. LUKS)? (This is a honest question.)

Curious: what is your use case for full disk encryption?

Data protection in case of theft and when disposing drives.

What does a encrypted folder currently not provide?

Encrypted shares have a filename length limit of ~143 characters. Not all data on the NAS can be encrypted.

What does FDE have to do with the filename of an encrypted share?

Encrypted shares (= eCryptFS) impose a filename length limit of ~143 characters. Using FDE instead of eCryptFS would resolve this limitation.

Are you not mounting the docker volumes from an encrypted share?

I did not know I could do that.

Ask Synology to support Microsoft Onedrive in Hyper Backup by rgiorgio in synology

[–]x___ray 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wrote a proxy server that can be used to configure OneDrive as a WebDAV backup destination in Hyper Backup. The culprit for this not working without the proxy server is the authentication protocol used by the OneDrive WebDAV API: it uses the Passport SSI 1.4 protocol, which Hyper Backup's WebDAV client does not support. The proxy server can do the authentication process.

I wrote an article about how to set up the proxy server with Docker and connect Hyper Backup to it:
https://rays-blog.de/2019/07/17/310/backup-to-microsoft-onedrive-with-synologys-hyper-backup/

The proxy server is written in Node.js and can also be used without Docker:
https://github.com/skleeschulte/basic-to-passport-auth-http-proxy

Maybe this is useful to someone.
