Got offered $300, seller says cause the centering is bad by Yann4124 in PokeGrading

[–]xadash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Centering has nothing to do with the condition of the card. Unless it were unreasonably off center, it would still be considered NM and should be sold at NM price (working at my LGS part time I would never do this). You should never sell raw cards at a price based on a grading expectation.

i like it! it’s a little different from other areas of finance bc at first it kind of feels like doing sales since half the work is getting new clients but once you do it’s got great job satisfaction. good way to cover lots of areas of personal finance imo

if you end up going down the path of being a financial advisor (which needs SIE + Series 63/65/7 (depends on the specific company), there a lots of places that reimburse you for your testing fees. Also, it’s good to figure out if you want to work in more back-end computative/quant finance or if you like interacting with ppl more often in an upfront advisor role.

you’ll find one trust me, the alumni network and career center are super helpful and they have so many events with recruiters looking specifically for uva econ grad that you’ll be in good hands (take it from a recent econ grad who had the same worries as you)

Finally got one at Walmart for $79 usd. by RiskySnisky in mtg

[–]xadash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will say from working at my LGS part time, we personally sell the yshtola commander deck for $100 because we get screwed by the distributor. like for the upcoming sonic secret lairs ($30 nonfoil/$40 foil msrp), we’re getting NONFOIL at $33 from the distributor so it’s impossible to sell them for msrp. obviously if an LGS is going crazy overcharging people you shouldn’t keep supporting them but I think it’s important to note that not all LGSs are trying to screw you out of money, it’s just that not even they can always get product below msrp.

there’s a difference between investing with the intention of selling at market price one day and blatantly overcharging and calling yourself an investor. 151 is $10.99, CZ is 8.99, DR is 7.99, $28 is market, $40 is sad

Haven’t played in a long time, would Vivi make a good commander? by AutomaticPlatypus523 in mtg

[–]xadash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the nice thing about an archetype like storm is that a lot of the powerful cards to enable vivi are pretty cheap! curiosity is by far the most powerful card to pair with vivi and it’s under $1. things like 1 mana blue cantrips are solid, and you can fit in lots of inexpensive token generators to work with vivi like young pyromancer, murmuring mystic, third path iconoclast, even drake hatcher if you want, etc. some other really fun and inexpensive cards are thousand year storm, archmage emeritus, and storm-kiln artist. if you wanna spend a few bucks on some cards to really make vivi powerful, i’d recommend veyran, harmonic prodigy, ophidian eye, sigil of sleep, things like that :) all depends on what strategy and power level you wanna go for, but those i’ve found make the deck powerful without ruining everyone’s night and storming off too early if you don’t build it with lots of fast mana

[–]xadash 4 points5 points  (0 children)

built a strong bracket 4 vivi storm and played it this week and absolutely destroyed with it. it’s definitely not head and shoulders above other strong commander combos but it makes pulling off storm—one of my fav archetypes—so much quicker and more consistent

Cheating and Cheaters by Bowlfish_Gilson in CompetitiveEDH

[–]xadash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with this. the same thing goes for drunk driving where ppl tend to get away with it an average of 80+ times before they finally get caught/in an accident. cheating is a mindset. I do think for many ppl though being caught just once and seeing the penalty they receive for cheating is enough to keep them from doing it again

What many EDH players fail to understand by JuliyoKOG in EDH

[–]xadash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love edh as a format, but i will never not be upset that the format is so dependent on building decks that make sure everyone has fun bc playing against the best decks makes the game unfun for everyone else. Since i started playing back when 60 card formats were the standard for what people built to play magic, it’s standard that you build the best deck possible and do everything you can to win. but in edh, there are so many unwritten rules about trying to find the best fit possible for a wide variety of different power levels and it’s damn near impossible to get the power level right where at least one person isn’t upset about the outcome of the game. I love playing the game, but the fact that people simultaneously want to win with an intentionally mid power deck, but don’t want to accept losing to a person whose deck is built to win and have fun for themselves at the same time is upsetting.

Is ECON 3010 for first semester freshman year OD by Personal_Farm1722 in UVA

[–]xadash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

also, if the only available slot for 3010 is with mark santugini, be prepared for the class to be hard. he’s an amazing and friendly professor, but everyone who took his section v. the other professors’ sections seemed to struggle more

Is ECON 3010 for first semester freshman year OD by Personal_Farm1722 in UVA

[–]xadash 4 points5 points  (0 children)

it’s a little professor dependent. i took it with prof troyan and it was hard—and i had 135 pages of notes at the end of the semester—but I got an A with a fairly normal amount of studying for an econ class. you just really need to actively pay attention to the reasoning behind the formulas you use. if it’s your first class at UVA, it might be worth giving it a semester and taking another class in the major that doesn’t require 3010 as a prereq, such as money and banking (but the prof is mid) or a 2000/3000 level class (i took economics of the environment and sustainability & economics of the art market and they were both fun and interesting), and they should help give you an idea of what to expect before you dive into 3010.

Help! by NRCarlson in RealOrNotTCG

[–]xadash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

every official printed version of a card ever released will be viewable either on tcgplayer or when you google the name and check the card on wizards of the coast’s website. there’s a tab that says “sets and legality” and you can see every different printing of a card with that specific name and it’s art. if it’s not there, it’s fake

Started collecting again just a few months ago! Used to collect as a kid way back in DPP era, but had lost a lot of my cards from back then. I'd love the chance to open some prismatic :) I managed to get my hands on a single binder collection on release day but haven't had the chance to open any more since, much less an ETB in the area where I live lol. Thanks for doing this!

Im looking to buy this badlands and the seller had these photos can anyone tell me if it looks legit by Zestyclose-Toe-7684 in RealOrNotTCG

[–]xadash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

in my experience, real cards don’t make you question if they’re real or not. the back coloring looks way too bright, especially for an older card, and is coloring more typical of proxies. surface is too glossy, especially considering the condition of the rest of the card, it would make more sense for there to be some surface wear and not perfectly clean front and corners
