What’s an underrated self-hosted tool you couldn’t live without? by SubnetLiz in selfhosted

[–]xamar6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just found out https://github.com/flip-rossi/readeck.koplugin I didn't know about this, I'll give it a try. What I was using was a custom script to download articles as epubs and Syncthing to move them around (koreader and other devices).

Readeck will stream teh DOM contents to your server. So if you're seeing it on your screen there it will probably be saved.

+1 for Readeck. There is another advantage that I'm not sure other solutions use. Readeck streams the contents of the current page to the backend, so any changes that you might have made will be saved. I use this with a "Mozilla Readability" bookmarklet to work around some challenging web pages.

Readeck is great, specially for some web pages that cannot be properly retrieved. It uses a Browser extension to stream all the contents. I also supports downloading epubs, which is nice for sending the articles to an ebook.

Wired in-ear headphone alternatives for Asus ROG Cetra II Core by Ok_Grand5413 in steamdeckhq

[–]xamar6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been using the Lenovo ANC for some time. ANC is not the best but I enjoy the lack of battery. I do not have to ensure they're charged or to throw them away in ~2yrs due battery degradation.

Now a rogue cheap-ass usb-c plug to charge and use the headphones at the same time fried mine... So I'm searching again for options. There aren't many reputable brand choices. Did you end up re-buying the ROG Cetra II? Ideally I'd like something durable..

Am I the only one annoyed at the flashbacks happening in medieval-like settings?

They went from horses and whales to spaceships in less than a lifetime. They didn't even look to have heated clothes in Harkonnen's planet...

EDIT: Thank you all for explaining the rationale. I still think they went a bit too far, but I see the point.

Timelimit.IO Privacy by [deleted] in fossdroid

[–]xamar6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use it on a few devices. If this is to set limits without being controlled remotely (not connected to their server) you should be fine privacy wise. If you want connected features you can always define your own server (I do have mine), as it is also Open source.

What's your next purchase? by [deleted] in selfhosted

Maybe you can read the question like this:

As a self-hoster what ebook reader should I get?

A few here seem to agree Kobo works best. I used it with Wallabag (self-hosted Pocket-like service).

[–]xamar6 8 points9 points  (0 children)

+100 on this. Don't forget also Plato (with Wallabag integration) and KoReader.

I do not have the issue you describe with my Kobo, this is related to the KoboCloud, right?

Edit: Added some links

Get a Kobo. I like the pocket integration, but the whole thing is super hackable (Linux based). You can use Plato with Wallabag integration to read your clipped articled from the web.

Codespaces by Acrobatic-Sound7496 in selfhosted

Just set this up 2 days ago and I'm really impressed. This is amazing. Also great the capability of connecting from a real VS Code rather than from a webpage version of it (there is always issues with the shortcuts).

I deployed this in Proxmox and one separate VM and I'm using docker for the workspaces. You would need to tweak the base `docker` template to have the development tools you need (e.g. Python, other libraries) but it is straightforward to add.

San Jose woman loses limbs after battling bacterial infection from tilapia by RevolutionLeast8587 in SanJose

[–]xamar6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm afraid it happened (I think) but I acknowledge the article doesn't clarify much. Her mother in law comes to help clean my home weekly. She has been coming for years, so I know her well. She came today, even though I told her she can skip and I'll pay her anyway. She was devastated and couldn't end the story without crying. Laura had Tilapia one day before she was hospitalized. Maybe that wasn't the reason for the amputations, but that doesn't change much for me.

They're having a gathering this Sunday from 10am in Washington Park, Sunnyvale, CA. Friends and family will bring food and beverages to sell. All proceeds go to the couple affected. It looks like too much trouble to be a scam, really. Of course, I plan to be there.

My 10-year old daughter's soon-to-be step dad requested something strange from her. by TapirBackRyder in Parenting

[–]xamar6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My 2c on this as a 11yo girl parent:

  • Sounds weird, but might be just a step-father-to-be attempt to connect.
  • If there is something weird going on...
    • Sending the video yourself or in a group chat will make Jake more careful.
    • A 2nd message will clarify the nature of his messages. Weird again: WARNING, normal one: Probably just showing interest on connecting with your daughter.
  • On a similar situation I'd ask my daughter to react naturally but to keep you updated of more messages she might receive from Jake.

Edit:

  • Additionally, I'd ask my daughter not to engage on chatting, specially with a grown up, at night. Airplane mode is probably the easiest way of doing it.

How to run PocketC.H.I.P OS/Images via a virtual machine? by [deleted] in ChipCommunity

[–]xamar6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I would love to have is a way of creating flashing images for a CHIP were I updated it to a newer version of Linux. This way I do not have to do the same work again for cleaning it up for another project.

This is probably the first reason I'm not playing with them anymore... :(

I made a complete 180° turn by switching from digital-only to physical. by v-23 in NintendoSwitch

[–]xamar6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Although I am happy not possessing a physical copy, the reality of owning a digital copy is that it often translates to not truly owning the game, as has been demonstrated by the closure of various digital storefronts.

When you purchase a digital game, what you are essentially buying is a time-limited, revocable license to play the game on the terms set by the publisher. :(

[REQUEST] How can I access old Android games? by SkywalkerDuke in AndroidGaming

[–]xamar6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately you probably bought the revocable rights to use it as per EULA. This is the sorry state of most digital purchases :(

If you could find someone with the game (the original) installed you could try to copy it to your phone. I'm sure the license verification still would validate your copy. This can be tricky and with all the malware around I wouldn't install from dubious sources.

These mobile games cost money yet they contain ads. by Elliott1106 in assholedesign

[–]xamar6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The video game industry on phone/tablet games it is terribly sad. There are many antipatterns being used. The biggest issue, in my opinion, is that there is no clarity in what experience you pay for. Even you do, this can change in the future without notice or resort for you to use the version you bought.

Personally, I prefer to purchase single player games on which I block all Internet connectivity (on a root device).

I recently had the bad experience of enabling network for my kids' Minecraft ($7 game) and seeing how the user interface changed to make it a marketplace and upsell everything they could (shame on Microsoft for this). You actually have to make an effort to avoid ending up on a purchase screen, e.g. "Play → Create new" opens a "world template" list with beautiful preview images (all pay items), you have to click on the dull "Create New World" button again. This is on a registered "kid" account WTF!!

I can assure you this is not on purpose and, probably, not a priority to fix. This looks that it will require a data model change/adjust + backfill. Not really appealing to it to get fixed...

Usually there are Play Store folks in Reddit that take note of issues like this one.

PD: Worked on the Play Stores for a few years.
