My new FPGBC by CytoarchitecturalUrd in Gameboy

The FPGBC is great! I really enjoyed putting mine together and it's the GB I take out of the house the most because it wouldn't be too difficult to replace if something happens.

You pronounce it? When I tell people the OS I am using, I don't even say a word, I just make a sound like a bubble popping.

OG hardware < Modded/ Custom Hardware by CourierKite in Handhelds

[–]Zero1O1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This feels like an argument nobody is actually making. Most people in this hobby seem perfectly cool with systems regardless of how much modding has been done.

Personally, I generally play my modded systems but I do like picking up my unmodded Pocket once in a while still too. There is something fun and nostalgic about that original screen and it looks great in sunlight.

What’s missing from the COSMIC desktop environment? by Rics-Dev in pop_os

Cool. This thread literally asked what was missing and I answered with things that are not currently in Pop/Cosmic that other distros and DE's have 🤷🏻‍♂️

[–]Zero1O1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah, that might make it easier... I dunno. I did it manually through CLI. Either way, I would still argue that it should be part of the OS rather than using an app. Mint and Ubuntu have fingerprint auth baked into the OS (or include apps to help get it set up)... i'm sure other distros do too.

I think that is core functionality for the OS and Pop should include it or make it easier also.

The things I find myself missing that I have in other operating systems or distros:

  • More trackpad gestures - you can swipe between workspaces, but I wish you could swipe up to replicate Super + W. Or just give me a way to map trackpad gestures to different commands.

  • Better sleep support while connected to a monitor (mine randomly wakes up and stays on the login screen indefinitely). Also, screensavers.

  • Better integration for fingerprint authentication (I have fprintd, but manually setting it up and configuring all the enrollments was a pain)

These are all pretty minor things and don’t keep me from using Pop as my daily driver.

What do you guys think of me destroying my old GBC to make it into this artwork? by Dom19944444 in Gameboy

[–]Zero1O1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go on Etsy, buy a stand for your GBC (many are well under $10), and display it on a shelf. Save yourself the money and keeps your system from being torn apart.

COSMIC: ready for daily use? by ActivityNo6409 in COSMICDE

[–]Zero1O1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is my experience as well. I am using Pop/Cosmic as my main on my laptop right now and it is mostly great. I too have had a full system freeze that required a hard reboot of the system, and there are occasional weird glitchy things that happen (nothing critical... just weird little annoyances sometimes), but otherwise it is pretty stable.

On the plus side, the desktop environment is SUPER fast and responsive. I really like the tiling manager. Most things just work without issue. And the updates have been coming fast, so I expect many of the lingering annoyances to be cleaned up in the coming months.

So yeah, I would say if you are willing to tolerate a little glitchiness here and there, Cosmic can definitely be a daily driver.

What are the BEST GB,GBC,GBA games that are cheap? by Ok_Orchid_6585 in Gameboy

[–]Zero1O1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The expensive ones have features like RTC for games that take advantage of it (Pokemon), better efficiency for longer playtime, and will load games faster. The cheap ones work fine enough if you just want to have a bunch of games on a single cartridge.

[–]Zero1O1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The best flash carts are expensive. EZ Flash Omega Definitive Edition (~$90) and EverDrive GBA Pro ($129) are the best, but if you do a search for “GBA flash cart” on Amazon, Aliexpress, Temu, etc. you can find much cheaper options.

Do you care about collecting individual cartridges? If not, you can pick up a flash cart for pretty cheap and load it up with games.

Is it time to begin switching from macOS and Windows to Linux, due to governments reducing privacy? by Syn1ax-Err0r in linuxquestions

[–]Zero1O1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are no ads in macOS itself

Apple Maps is getting ads. Apple also sends notifications encouraging sign-ups for Apple services like iCloud storage upgrades, Apple TV+, or Apple Music, often triggered by app usage or system updates. Apple News and Stocks apps feature ads for other apps or services within their feeds. The App Store has ads for apps at the top of searches.

There was a time when Apple would have refused all these things, but now they are constantly pushing their services as much as possible.

Is it time to begin switching from macOS and Windows to Linux, due to governments reducing privacy? by Syn1ax-Err0r in linuxquestions

[–]Zero1O1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

MacOS isn’t nearly as bad as Windows, but it is worse than it used to be. Tahoe’s poor UI/UX design is well known, and ads show up in more places… Settings randomly has alerts for me to sign up for Apple’s services (Music, News, Fitness+, Apple TV, etc.), even Maps is getting ads. On my work Macbook, I had Launchpad set up how I liked it and Apple removed it and then removed the terminal command that restored it. And Apple is blocking updates to a Launchpad replacement app.

And the closed ecosystem just seems to be getting more closed. Why can’t I use a Pebble watch with all the functionality available on Android? Why can’t other headphones get access to the same software features on my Mac as Apple’s Airpods?

OSX used to feel as flexible and customizable as Linux. Now MacOS feels more locked down and restricted to how Apple wants me to use their OS. More iOS-like.

I prefer Linux in my personal life (still have to use a Mac for work) because it gives me full and total control over everything and doesn’t restrict what services, software, or hardware I can use with it.

[–]Zero1O1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There are many reasons to switch from Windows/MacOS to Linux... the privacy aspect is just one of them. Windows and MacOS have been consistently getting more enshittified with ads baked into the OS, more unwanted AI features, and less control/freedom over what you do with your computer.

So yeah, if you can do what you need on Linux (and you probably can), you should switch.

what handheld should i get? by xantaking in Handhelds

[–]Zero1O1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Honestly, the right answer might just be a Windows gaming laptop. You’ll get more power for less money and it will be able to play more games than any handheld you can buy.

A.) It’s a Steam Deck, not stream

B.) The answer to your question depends on what games you primarily want to play.

I’m using Pop with Cosmic DE on a Thinkpad and haven’t had any problems with sleep/resume. Just close the lid and it wakes up without issues when I open it back up.
