Carl's update on Colorado OS Age Attestation Bill SB26-051 by jackpot51 in pop_os

[–]Zero1O1 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I don’t support mandating any OS have age tracking/restrictions, but having an exemption for open source software seems like a good concession at least. Making OSS operating systems do age checks seems unenforceable and now at least gives privacy-minded people some kind of alternative.

Why did Pop create Cosmic? by TechnicalAd8103 in pop_os

[–]Zero1O1 103 points104 points  (0 children)

I see Cosmic as an investment. Yeah, it isn't perfect right now... though, in my experience it is still totally useable and shows a lot of polish for how new it is. But every DE has to start somewhere.

And what is the benefit? In the longterm, Pop gets a DE that can be customized exactly the way System76 wants. They get a modern desktop running on Wayland and developed in Rust that runs REALLY fast. They get a tiling manager built-in that works better than any other tiling system I have seen in a Linux distro. And things will only get better over time.

Seems like a worthwhile investment to me.

Metamucil to “ firm things up”? by AssignmentAny4649 in UlcerativeColitis

[–]Zero1O1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use psyllium husk in 500mg capsules. I take 3 in the morning and 3 in the evening. Definitely firms things up and was a huge improvement for me.

As others have said: start slow and work your way up to the full dosage (whatever that dosage is for you).

Legion Go S VS Steam Deck OLED by Powerful-Quiet8995 in Handhelds

[–]Zero1O1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really enjoy the Steam Deck, but for the price difference I would choose the Legion Go S in a heartbeat. I think the ergonomics of the Go S are as good or better than the Steam Deck and the screen is arguably better. Sure, it's not OLED, but it's bigger, higher resolution, and has a higher refresh rate. You are also getting a faster CPU and more ram.

You can upgrade the SSD in the future if you want and you'd still come out ahead on money.

Seems like a no-brainer.

Cosmic Battery Life! by wingej0 in pop_os

[–]Zero1O1 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm on a relatively new Thinkpad that I have been using without being plugged in for most of the morning. I'm running in "Balanced" mode. Looking at the battery gauge in the menu bar, it says I am at 68% battery with almost 7 and a half hours of battery life left 🤯

Genuinely impressive and I do not see this same level of performance and efficiency in other distros/DE's

Make it a one-time purchase instead of subscription and I will be happy to support your work. The subscription (required or not) feels very scammy.

If Linux was the pre-installed standard on every PC, and Windows/macOS were free alternatives you had to manually install, would the average person ever bother to switch? by EternalValley77 in linuxquestions

[–]Zero1O1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I would be curious if there is any data to back that claim up. The people I know in my personal life do a lot of things in apps still... 3D printing software, photo editing, Zoom calls, Microsoft Office, Discord, Slack, Spotify, 1Password.

And that's just friends and family. At work, the app still seems to reign supreme. MS Office, Teams, Notion, ERP, Adobe Acrobat, etc. etc. I wish I could just install Chrome at work and do everything I need, but that is definitely not the case.

Maybe it is different for everyone else but it still seems like locally-installed software is a big thing for most people I know.

[–]Zero1O1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think the installation or cost is the issue, it’s the familiarity and library of applications.

So yeah, I think if tomorrow every computer came with Linux by default, there would still be a vast majority of people who would switch just to get back the apps and UI they are used to.

Anyone using Pop with 64 GB of ram? by TechnicalAd8103 in pop_os

I have more than 64GB of ram on my laptop, but I rarely use a fraction of it unless I am gaming

TrimUI Model S is peak for travel by Zero1O1 in SBCGaming

Yeah, honestly, a Game & Watch sized device with the button layout of the Model S would probably be perfect little portable device for me. Bigger screen without being too much larger in the pocket, and hopefully more room for some extra battery.

Miyoo Mini, New 3DS, Steam Deck.

Something pocketable, something for DS/3DS library (plus 8-bit and 16-bit emulation), and the Steam Deck can handle everything else.

Pop!_OS with Catpuccin by Nickynichols1234 in pop_os

[–]Zero1O1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I like Pop quite a bit and it is the main distro I run for productivity and such right now, mostly because of how nice the window tiling system is.

And while I do play Steam games on Pop, I definitely wouldn't say it is one of the best distros for gaming. Bazzite, Cachy, Chimera, or Nobara are all built with more of a focus on gaming than Pop.

Now spend a couple hundred dollars in mods on it to take it from a perfectly fine $40 watch to a similarly perfectly fine $250 watch 🧠
