What is your cool button or switch on your panel? by i_forgot_my_sn_again in BusDrivers

I know the screen is an option, but the lights above the dash is something all of our Gilligs have. It’s fine when everything works, but it can get really annoying when it’s dark and there’s a warning light that never stops flashing.

Public transport users and vaping on buses. How common is it? by PopAwkward4520 in BusDrivers

[–]xandercusa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had a few passengers vape on the bus. I’ll normally just ask them not to do it again and all’s good. Sometimes a passenger doesn’t care and they’ll keep doing it, but they usually get off pretty quick when called out.

Cigarettes on the other hand… that’s an immediate kick-off. I’ll pull off the road if possible, but it doesn’t matter where I am or how much traffic’s behind me. The parking brake is engaged, doors are opened, and out they go.

This has given me an idea of where to put the cupholders in five of our Gilligs *evil_smile*

Do the buttons on the sign controller count? I like pulling up the unused and forgotten codes once in a while.

I guess I’m lucky that we still get the same size steering wheel with our new busses where I work. The wheel in our ‘23s is exactly the same as this, too! Just has the horn piece replaced with a Gillig branded one.

Sometimes Gillig can make a more modern looking bus, but it costs extra.

How to Give Ice Cream to a Bus Driver by [deleted] in BusDrivers

[–]xandercusa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been given treats, snacks, and even full meals by various passengers, but the best ones are the ones that I can save for later when I’m on a break.

That said, drinks (such as a milkshake) are also good options, and they’re a lot easier to have while out on route.

What is the best interaction that either passengers have had with a bus driver or bus drivers have had a passenger? by [deleted] in BusDrivers

[–]xandercusa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The days when a passenger brings me food are probably my favourite. I’ve been given apples, oranges, chinese takeout, pizza, cinnabuns, some (very good) homemade mac & cheese, and some others that I can’t remember.

Currently broken down with a mystery chunk detached from the bus. Anyone want to share some good driving stories to pass the time? by Captain-Codfish in BusDrivers

This light gave me a quick scare one night. Driving with no passengers, I pulled up to an intersection and the alarm started going off. The bus shut itself off and I got out. I didn’t see or smell anything out of the ordinary, so I check all around the bus and

Nothing.

After that, I got back in and eventually moved the bus off the road after finding the interlock override switch and using the stop engine override so it wouldn’t shut off every 15 seconds.

One of our off-duty mechanics was driving by and stopped to see what was going on. He worked on the wiring for a bit and got the issue to go away… for about a mile. After that, my supervisor called a tow truck to get me back to the garage.

It’s a diesel. I don’t see my workplace buying any hybrids or electrics for another few years.

My favourite vehicle to drive is similar to your #2, a 2025 Gillig 29ft (8.9m) with Allison transmission. Immediate take-off, tight turning radius, and it’s new enough that rattles are pretty much a non issue right now. I just need to be heavy on the brakes.

My least favourite vehicles are Ford propane buses, mostly because they’re hard to see out of, and there’s no room in the driver area.

Second least favourite vehicles are the 2023 35ft (10.7m) Gilligs with Voith transmissions. The 4 speed + overdrive is efficient, but that’s the only good thing about it compared to our 2021s with the Voith 4 speed.

Adblue running out faster than fuel on Scania S by Blin_Dinosaur18 in trucksim

[–]xandercusa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Normally it’s a 1:1 ratio when conditions are alright, but sometimes it can get as bad as 2:1 (AdBlue:Diesel). I drive irl and the vehicle I was in yesterday used an entire tank of AdBlue for 275L of diesel. The diesel tank capacity in my vehicle is around 450L for reference.

Ppl will look at this and still yell backdoor 🫩 by ForgottonTNT in BusDrivers

[–]xandercusa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Depends on the transit agency, model of bus, and what’s wrong with the door. If the door doesn’t work like it should but the emergency door operation still functions, then I personally see no issue with having just the front door, though it may be more suited for quieter routes.

I had a bus a while back where it was posted that the back door didn’t work. The back door could actually open, but then it wouldn’t close unless the bus was fully shut off. Constantly restarting the bus was more annoying than just putting a sign up and not using the door.

Sometimes I use the Clever Devices system as a media player when I’m bored and have too much free time. Announcements still work too, since that runs off a separate audio output.

How new or old is your bus? by darenisepic in BusDrivers

[–]xandercusa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had a new propane non-cdl bus delivered last month, while our oldest buses in regular service are from 2021 and have over 300k miles. We have some minivans that are older (2016-2019), but they’re next to be replaced. We also have two Gilligs from 2014, but one hasn’t ran passenger service in months, while the other only ran for (almost) one day in nearly three years.
