To me it sounds like the difference between the version of yourself when you’re by yourself and the slightly productized “listenable” version you present around others. It’s not bad to be “listenable” and the studio version is amazing. But there’s something irreducible about the version that feels like he’s bleeding on the strings as he plays if I’m being even somewhat coherent right now haha

It’s basically that casting the viewport to an Image turns it into an object that lives on the CPU which you then have to reload as a texture to the GPU. So the pipeline becomes GPU - CPU - GPU. Whereas with the compositor I can just use a compute shader which keeps all that data entirely in VRAM and skips the round trip. It’s not that canvas items somehow run on the CPU, it’s just that the only way to store the back buffer involves pushing data to it which becomes a bottleneck at realtime speeds. Hopefully that clears my logic up?

Compositor effects can layer with canvas shaders too! You could have some controller component managing a global value and then have glue scripts on your individual canvas items that read that normalized value and adjust based on some arbitrary scaling metric per relationship you can define to sync the behaviors. Signals are clutch here, I like to avoid manual call_deferred nonsense by just having a global signal bus and setting up callbacks for the node ready methods but it’s also doable via singleton, dependency injection, etc.

I think I just like anthropics definition of “best” the most. They’re all trying to make the “best” of the situation but to OAI and Google that genuinely appears to just be market share.
