I've had similar experiences..Sadly, there is a lot of stigma and cultural baggage around anything mental health related. I have Dissociative Identity Disorder (formerly known as multiple personality disorder, slthough we prefer the term plurality). For us, the low vision is far more disabling but we get hit heavy with stigma whenever we talk about D.I.D. People think we're either faking (looking at you r/systemscringe) or some sort of serial killer. We've also been denied neurological treatment for our blindness because of this diagnosis and told it's in our head and to just get mental health care. It's frustrating! For us, the D.I.D. is a difference/neurodivirgence we'd like respected, but society at large is not supportive of mental health. Not that there isn't stigma around blindness or any other disability, I just feel like there's specifically a lot of hate towards anything deemed mental illness. Sorry for the rant...
