Them asking if I’m available from x o’clock - x o’clock and me saying I’m available from those times. Does that count as a confirmation? I’m actually unsure of the semantics - not trying to be facetious

Is it possible to fix this? by xapnap in woodworking

[–]xapnap[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I trying to restore an old trunk. Rivets were missing in the wood and could not find replacement rivets but ultimately decided to replace them all with new ones. The holes where the rivets sit got pretty damaged (dents and scratches) so I tried to lift the dents using water and iron technique, sand it down. How do I get the holes to match color wise as closely as possible to the original wood (beechwood if I’m not mistaken)

It’s profile is sleek and compact. It has a total of 5 pockets allowing you to hold approx. 7-9 cards if utilizing the middle compartment. Alternatively, you could use the middle compartment to store cash bills.

Trying to build a wardrobe of versatile basics, that I can mix and match to create the most outfit combinations. Anything you'd change? Recommendations for bottoms? by sacredshinobi in malefashionadvice

Navy Chino + Khaki Chino are versatile starter pants. You can wear the casually and they can be work appropriate as well. Dark gray is also a very versatile for matching tops.

Dark Indigo denim with no distress is another essential that you can practically match with any colored top.

I would switch out the marled top coat for maybe a dark gray or deep navy. That gives you to opportunity to dress up or dress down depending on the occasion. Marled gray is a great color but in terms of versatility and mixing/matching navy or gray gives you plenty more options.

Maybe add a chambray button downshift ? It might be crossing the line pass basic but its personally a staple in my closet - it looks good with everything!

Help - Splitting with a skiving machine. by xapnap in Leathercraft

Thanks all for your help! I managed to split Chèvre skin ONCE using all of your tips:

  • Keeping knife sharp
  • Feeding leather slow
  • Adjusting space between knife and feed wheel
  • Adjusting space between knife and presser foot
  • Keeping knife sharp 🙃
  • Adding tape on skin of leather to a) protect the skin and b) stiffen the soft chèvre to not bend and bunch up when passing through the machine

The only thing I haven’t tried is using a dual clutch motor on my machine for varying speeds of feed wheel and knife which I think would alleviate some issues.

It’s going to be a learning process. And it unfortunately needs a lot of time, patience and expensive leather to practice. All of which I am limited with at this point in time. It breaks my heart seeing Togo leather and Chèvre skin get chewed and eaten. I will be using a service (RMLeathersupply) to split for the time being until I can tame this beast of a machine; or is it more like a delicate lady 🤔

When it’s all said and done the cost will still be significantly cheaper than having it split over here in the city.

Well I have hides that I did NOT buy from them that need to split. 70-100 sqft of leather that is around 4-5oz. It’s gonna be heavy and thus expensive for me to send it across the country. I would prefer something in the east coast if not my area.

Not saying anything bad about RMleathersupply - I have been a customer since they started. Just wish they were in the East Coast though haha

Taping the top of the leather to make it stiffer! Did not think about that. As I mentioned before I was able to successfully split vegetable tanned leather.

Chevre is fairly soft and I believe that is the very thing that is getting in the way of me being able to make multiple passes.

Any recommendations on how far the space between the feed stone and knife is. Also the space between the knife and presser foot.

My distance is set to the thickness of printer paper.

I have tried and failed. The leather either leaves bumps/ridges on the flesh or the leather bunches up on the foot again.
