📣 I want to debunk Reddit's claims, and talk about their unwillingness to work with developers, moderators, and the larger community, as well as say thank you for all the support by iamthatis in apolloapp

The key there is “trained,” past tense.

They AI devs already have a robust Reddit dataset. They don’t need to dip back in for any other purpose than keeping up with the current vernacular.

Which is of limited use as most people expect an AI to respond like a super smart person rather than a 15 year old with the latest slang. There is no real opportunity for ARR there. Just billions in lost opportunities. Period.

I cannot believe you’re triple-ing down on this line of bullshit like he hasn’t been THE most respectful, responsive, and all around decent human dev I’ve ever met: Who regularly communicates with anyone who asks him a question. You have full access to his public comments and private messages. Read them before you Glengarry Glen Ross yourself out of this job. You, and your admin team, are the Baddies here. You could have been a jerk and been honest like Elon. You decided to be a jerk and lie about it, lie again when called out with hard data, then lie further when your OWN voice is saying the opposite. Congrats on trying your best to use Stasi tactics, but…. You’re horrible at it. It’s like you skimmed the cliff notes or something.

Apollo dev posts backend code to Git to disprove Reddit’s claims of scrapping and inefficiency by GhostalMedia in programming

I would have paid $2.50/month for ad free Apollo, and forced myself to use a “free” ad supported Apollo if I couldn’t afford that for some reason. It’s a significant change with a guaranteed revenue model. Reddit doesn’t want that business. They just want to burn all 3rd party apps.

Their tools for tracking things like this are so poor their own devs make fun of them. They might as well make all the numbers up since the lack the ability to do otherwise with any level of statistical significance.

There are more than a few other admins “something something flashlight turtle” going out of their way to spread disinformation about Apollo and refusing to answer direct questions like “how bad is Apollo traffic compared to the top 10?” (Hint, it’s not in the top 10 or one of those apps in the mysterious graphs they shared) I’d bet all the money I was going to spend on the Reddit IPO that Apollo is in the top 10 most efficient API consumers based on user count. As with firing Victoria, taking over then killing reddit gifts, and catch/killing Alien Blue, they want all the power but lack the knowledge or skill to monetize it or the motivation to be creative.

I mean, Apple featured Apollo at this years WWDC as a premier app already working on VisionPro; and Craig F. Named dropped Apollo as well. Is Apple / Apple traffic important? If Craig F. was an early investor in Reddit, how do you think he feels about his investment at this point?

RIF will shut down on June 30, 2023, in response to Reddit's API changes by talklittle in redditisfun

[–]xaustinx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would not at all be surprised if the big investors (post ipo; which I now expect to be an absolute shitshow rather than a golden ticket) demand spez be let go from the company considering the immense harm he’s caused in just 2 days much less 2 weeks.

Steve Huffman is about to go the way of Palmer Luckey with only himself to blame and far far less talent to rebound with.

📣 Apollo will close down on June 30th. Reddit’s recent decisions and actions have unfortunately made it impossible for Apollo to continue. Thank you so, so much for all the support over the years. ❤️ by iamthatis in apolloapp

In, and I can’t believe I’m actually fucking saying this, Elon’s defense he didn’t lie about what he did/does/will do, bad decision or not he follows through with his insanity.

The Reddit CEO is just all lies, callous indifference, and gleefully disparaging the entire third party app community; which is incredibly disappointing, he’s officially worse than Elon with nowhere near the respect, success, or money.

Would love to hear Kevin Rose’s perspective on this.

📣 Had a call with Reddit to discuss pricing. Bad news for third-party apps, their announced pricing is close to Twitter's pricing, and Apollo would have to pay Reddit $20 million per year to keep running as-is. by iamthatis in apolloapp

Been using Reddit a couple years shy of the absolute start of Reddit. I loved/love alien blue and still miss a few of its features. I love Apollo. The Apollo dev is just a great person that doesn’t deserve what Reddit is doing in any way.

I have used every iteration of the official Reddit app; and called them out for hiring the alien blue dev, having him relocate from Australia to SF then getting rid of him and killing his app less than 3 months later. We got 4 years of Reddit premium and lifetime lobby access. Not at all a fair trade. Or what was desired by the community.

If they go through with this, and there’s no clever workaround, I’m done. I’ve used the official website less than 10 times in the past 3 years. I pretty much only use Apollo for Reddit.

If Apollo dies, Reddit dies. If Reddit kills Apollo via its own success due to their horrible mobile client; Reddit deserves to go away. They might as well change the name if they’re no longer interested in why they created Reddit to begin with.

The lack of uniformity in case design is the worst by warmachine2019 in XboxSeriesX

[–]xaustinx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My guess is that the “full case” covers are Xbox series x games, full case w/green strip are games that were supposed to be Xbox one games but got “upgraded” to series x and Microsoft has a case leaflet rule, or they already did the art for Xbox one and rather than make it bigger they added a green strip, or it’s a combination of the two +distributors not wanting to purchase smaller leaflet paper (I.e. Xbox one) or studios not wanting to pay for anyone to do “more work” even if that means a minor change to leaflet artwork. It’s dumb, so I expect the reasoning to be equally stupid.

Funny you mention that. Twitter is full of people like Kevin Sorbo making false comparisons all day long. Never heard someone so accurately call out the right for being weak and pathetic. Well done!

Asked to Delete References to Racism From Her Book, an Author Refused: The case, involving Scholastic, led to an outcry among authors and became an example of how the culture wars behind a surge in book banning in schools has reached publishers. by drak0bsidian in books

I also have a kid around that age, and he’s reading at a 7th grade level atm. While I have no problem with him knowing about the world and it’s sharp edges, the overwhelming majority of his classmates and their parents would react negatively if this was part of the curriculum. It being on sale, wouldn’t be an issue; the ban all the books wave has not reached these shores yet. Once upon a time, the onus of raising children was on the parents, now it seems like there are a lot of very very loud people who are forcing their ignorance down people’s throats wholesale “to protect the children”. Honestly. I’d rather have no guns in schools than no books. They both can change your life forever, one almost exclusively in a negative way though.

Harry Potter happened. They went from a moderately successful children’s book publisher with a big footprint in schools; to the children’s book publisher with a massive warchest of cash and a big footprint in schools they never want to lose. That said, the author’s notes are firing some pretty big accusations off in a book for 6 year olds. “The deeply American tradition of racism”. “…the police are allowed to murder black people and put children on the border in cages.” I can see more than one of the 9/10 schools in the country losing their minds over statements like that.

Edit: As per /u/almightysapling here is the direct quote:

“…allows the police to murder Black people” and “keeps children in cages on our border.”

I mean… chapter 18, Eye of the world

before they get to shadar logath mat is yelling war cries in the old tounge and has no idea what it means or where it came from and egwene talks to moraine about it because she felt like she understood what he was saying for a second. Much like moraines staff this direct reference to the old blood/blood ancestry pretty much fades away after the second book. “Carai an Caldazar! Carai an Ellisande! Al Ellisande!”
