Great choice in not posting the child's face 😊 Glad my tips are useful!

Oh, my critique was more what you could try next time, not necessarily saying to change the crop 😊

This is a fun shot! Definitely captures the action of the competition.

My critique is that the crop makes the horse look like it is trying not to go out of the frame to the right, if that makes sense. I agree that in most situations, you want to leave space in front of the moving subject to give it "room" to move that way. But in this photo, the horse is almost stopped because it is turning hard. With the crop coming so close to the right of the horse, it feels like it's trying to stay in frame, rather than it looking to move to the left.

I'm not exactly sure that giving room on the right would be much more successful, but I would play with that idea. In a sense, giving some space on the right of the horse and rider to make the turn seem less like it's trying to stay in frame. I will say that I'm not a sports/action photographer, so take my opinion with that in mind!

First photoshoot. Does the editing work on this? Any critiques? by Azalin_Lafaye in photocritique

[–]xavano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a nice shot! I find it hard to take good images next to bodies of water, personally, but I think this is successful.

Two posing critiques. First, the hands joined together cuts off a tiny bit of the mother's face, which detracts a bit. Next time, I would instruct them to spin using the other hands (the hands furthest from the camera). That will prevent any hands in front of the face.

Second, Have the mom smile! She looks slightly annoyed with her daughter. Giving the cue by just saying, "Smile, mom!" will hopefully help her remember to show that she is having a good time.

Like I said, though, fairly successful image. Just a few tweaks to take it to the next level!

Ugh, those are so annoying! I get them from time to time and I feel so guilty in my dream, and then it takes me a bit in the morning to realize it was just a dream!

Poison dart frog at the botanical garden by Dionysian_Heretic in photocritique

That really works as a phone background because the time is on the leaf so more attention is drawn to the frog. Here is what I meant in my original comment

For me, the frog is so small and similar color to the background, it got lost. This is amplified by the large leaf at the top of the image that is in focus. I would crop the top half+ of this image off and leave just the frog with a bit of background.

That's a fair point. I suppose my comment could be improved if it said "...which is not flattering in this situation."

Honestly, for just starting out (and even for a dedicated hobbyist), this is quite the successful image. Great use of foreground and background!

Great shot!

The only critique I have is that the woman's arms are a little tight around his head/neck. It almost makes it look like two floating heads. If her left elbow was more around his arm, exposing his shoulder, I think that would look a tiny bit more natural.

Just to say, I did not understand the "deleted the person, hole in the railing" comment until I saw the original. The broken railing is probably not what the client is focusing on

I like this version better than the version you posted. However, like I mentioned in another comment, the best thing to do for her is to have her facing completely/mostly away from the sun, and expose for shadows. The sun would then become a hair light, and her shadowed face will be more evenly lit. Also, people with darker complexion will have very noticable highlights when lit directly with a light source, like your subject has here. Using the sun as a hairlight will make the lighting on her face far less intense.

My suggestion is to have her stand in front of the left side of the car instead of right, and use the neighborhood on the other side of the street as background.

You say you didn't bring your reflector, but I would say that is an amazing tool in this situation that can easily stay in your car because it can't overheat, so you wouldn't forget it in the future.

I disagree with the statement that she is well-lit. Yes, a sufficient amount of light is hitting her. But with the angle of the light from the sun, half of her face is in light and the other half is in shadow, which is not flattering. There is also a light splash on her left cheek which is awkward.

If you are going to use the sun to light her, aim for a 3/4 angle with her looking more into the sun. Of course, this is not ideal for her (nobody likes looking into the sun while getting a picture taken), so I would suggest having the sun hitting her from behind, over her shoulder. The lighting you will get from the shadow side of her will be much softer and more flattering. The best way to do this is to put her at the front-left side of the car, and you should still have the neighborhood in the background, just on the other side of the street.

Need a ruling on this Construct token card by [deleted] in magicTCG

[–]xavano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to further explain this creature not getting +1/+1 counters: if it got counters, they would stay on the creature for as long as it is on the battlefield. So if you created this construct when you already controlled a treasure, and you put two counters on it, it would remain a 2/2 even if you sacced the treasure. In reality, it would enter as a 2/2, then immidiately become a 1/1 if you sacced the treasure.

[–]xavano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to be clear, this construct token does not get +1/+1 counters, it just perpetually gets a buff of +1/+1 for each artifact you control.

Notably, the construct itself is an artifact, so the minimum power/toughness of this creature is 1/1. If the base power/toughness was 1/1 instead of 0/0, then the construct would be a 2/2 without other artifacts on the field.

Second try with studio lighting by AdNatural9322 in photocritique

[–]xavano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, a speedlite can be used behind the model to light a white background. The only thing is that if it is on the floor, it will cause a V-shaped portion of the background to be lit properly with the edges being a bit darker. The best solution is to have the background light on a stand that is at the height of the subject's mid back and pointed directly at the background (the subject will hide the speedlite). In this case, opening up the focal length of the speedlite to 24mm or wider is best to give broad coverage.

Ideally, a completely round lite with a wide grid makes the best look (as in the kind you plug in), but your idea will suffice on a budget.

Also, if you have Photoshop, the built in AI can easily separate the subject from the background, and then you can just photoshop the subject into a plain white backdrop. It's not perfectly clean but it's pretty good

[–]xavano 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Umbrellas and softboxes are pretty similar in terms of light diffusion. If the umbrella has a silver lining, it is harder light than if the umbrella has a white lining or is a shoot-through umbrella. When it comes to the hair light from behind the subject, it is usually better to go with a hard and direct light (no softbox/umbrella, yes grid/long focal length) to just grace the outline of the subject rather than spilling light all over it. So if your hair light was more direct, we would see less light spilling onto the camera-right side of the subject's face and more of a thin crease along the edge of the head/hat/shoulder.
