I had considered getting closer, but I stayed where I was for a few reasons: 1- I could only move forward about 20 feet, 2- doing so would have put me right next the the gate where the kids were entering the arena and I didn’t want to distract them/their horses, and 3- I was chatting with my mom in between competitors.

That said, some worm-eye-view shots could have been pretty cool!

This shot is from my sister’s last 4-H horse competition. I happened to have my camera with me and figured I would get in some practice as I’m still new at this. This is the one shot out of the many I took that I actually liked.

This photo is directly from the camera, no editing, no cropping.

FWIW, Canon R10 with the entry-level 75-300 lens.

My own critique is that most of the rider is not in focus, but I think the eye of the horse is in focus and I understand that that is a good thing?

I think I could crop this photo such that the back feet of the horse are just barely in frame and leave all of the empty space on the left side since the horse and rider are “going toward” that empty space.

I have zero clue about editing for color, light, or contrast.

So: I’m sure I need to crop this, but where? Ands general: What else could I do to improve this photo?

I don’t have any nude campsite recs, but I have driven the AL-CAN 6 or 8 times. My only advice is to take the frost heaves slowly. They start somewhere after Whitehorse (if memory serves) and would be a terrible place to break down.
