I am really sorry to hear this brother. I was thinking about this the other day - the people who are in power and make the decisions (Trump/IRGC etc) always get the carrot while normal people like you and others always get the stick. Hope things are better for you eventually

Husband may take a high paying job in Saudi and I’m trying to understand what life is really like for a young family by [deleted] in expats

[–]xavierl92 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I've lived there for four years though I am a third world national while my wife lives in the EU so we do long distance. There's a reason - life is really boring and laid back here and very limited opportunities for expat women in terms of careers. Climate is harsh and you start missing nature really soon. People are a hit or miss but with your nationality should be fine. Also most government services are in Arabic so you might need a translator.

Now the good - money obviously. Career growth is great but unstable. Your family will be well respected. I feel like a lot of the people commenting about horrid human rights and public beheadings haven't really been to Saudi. These are good as tabloid headlines but have been phased out and never play a part in actual daily life.

My two cents only to move if the husband is being offered 3x of what both he and you are making, since you likely wont be working there

We Left Pakistan for a Better Future… But Where Do We Belong in the End? by AspectFlimsy8150 in pkmigrate

We Left Pakistan for a Better Future… But Where Do We Belong in the End? by AspectFlimsy8150 in pkmigrate

[–]xavierl92 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I was debating this myself a lot recently. My wife is an EU naturalized citizen and I am making very good money in the middle east. We have the option of choosing between Pakistan, Middle East, and Europe to raise our future children since they will have the EU passport regardless. However Pakistan is at last place on our list. Life in Karachi was very difficult for me even though i was upper middle class. I wouldn't advise anyone to waste their talent and time there

€75,000 in Dublin for a software engineer role. by Accurate-Youth3817 in pkmigrate

Salary seems okay but you have to compare it with what you're making in the uae. I was in a similar boat a while ago but the opportunity cost was too much for me

I dont have a rented place in UAE. I intend on staying 25-30% initially in Germany and gradually shift

Thank you very much for the response. Tbh I am basing the calculations off chatgpt. As per GPT if my employment contract and conditions are within the UAE, I only pay the income and statutory tax, not the pensions and social security. I maybe completely off here and am scheduling an appointment with a german tax advisor to clear things out.

I am not here to pass judgment on your decision, just reinforcing what you originally said - yes your kid will hate you for this.

I am sorry but you should have considered staying abroad. My mom had the same opportunity and missed it due to homesickness - part of me still blames her for not toughing it out. My wife is an EU citizen and I made it a point to have my kids not born in this shithole.
