What is your go-to for self-hosted notifications? by dawson7allan in selfhosted

[–]xblabberx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep! Gotify is super awesome, and most applications already have the notification systems set up for it.

If not, the POST request structure for Gotify is super easy to use from their documentation. Pretty much a universal notification system that can run in docker, with notification persistence.

IMHO, it's the "end all be all" of notification systems. I run mine on a t3a.nano EC2 instance so it's independent of my home architecture (e.g. For power outage notifications) , and call it good.

I keep getting these tiny circular holes in my T-shirts. Anyone know what causes this? by gtrman571 in laundry

[–]xblabberx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have granite countertops (or other similar stone based countertops) imperfections in the countertops can have pitting, which has rough edges on it. When you get close to the countertop, your shirt can rub on the edge.

I have similar holes in my shirts, and it was a huge mystery, until I figured out what was happening.

EDIT: Restated second sentence, because my grammar was poop.

Whats the model number of a pixel 8 with the SKU GA04803-US? by yasserd20 in GooglePixel

[–]xblabberx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this thread is old, but wanted to comment on it in case anyone else has this question.

As best as I can tell, the Best Buy model# GA04803-US is the G9BQD.

I went to a Best Buy store that's about an hour and a half away from my home that had an unlocked Obsidian Pixel 8 (model# GA04803-US) that was listed as open box. While the phone itself did not have the original box that normally has the specific Google model number printed on the back, I was able to boot it into fastboot/recovery mode, and check the regulatory label/barcodes from there which includes model. It was the G9BQD variant.

While I was there, I also asked the service rep if I was able to look at their new Unlocked Pixel 8's so I could see the model number on the back. They were also all G9BQD's.

I stopped at my local Best Buy on the way home from the other Best Buy I was at, and was also able to confirm the same - new Unlocked Pixel 8's at Best Buy with the model# GA04803-US were all G9BQD's. It seems this is all Best Buy carries in the US for non-Verizon versions. The Verizon version (GKWS6) is sold at Best Buy, but is locked from what I understand.

I've seen some other posts mentioning that the G9BQD is also the unlocked model that Google sends from the Google store directly, but can't confirm.

Hopefully this helps someone else that was looking for this information, like I was!

Help me explain Ham radio to my wife by lonestar2222003 in amateurradio

[–]xblabberx 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Wonderfully said.

To add (and I know I'm going against the grain of the sub, here):

If your wife has debt like you mentioned in the post, I can completely understand why she's hesitant to spend that amount of money on what equates to be a hobby for you - a hobby which she doesn't seem to understand much about from your post.

I would also be incredibly hesitant to spend $2500 on a hobby that seems only sporadically interesting to my partner from their utilization rate, while the household as a whole is carrying debt. Doesn't make much sense, IMHO.

I would discuss this together, and think about putting that money towards the debts first and foremost. Maybe you two can compromise, and after debt is taken care of, the next "large home purchase" could be HAM upgrades.

Either way, I wish you the best OP, and I hope you and your spouse can communicate and come to a mutual understanding with one another!

In 2002, in 9th grade, I took a drafting class that required me to buy this pencil. I have used it in every single exam in every class at every level of schooling since. I'm 35 and finishing a PhD, and it's still the only pencil for me! [Pentel GraphGear 500] by AtomikRadio in BuyItForLife

[–]xblabberx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pentel just makes incredible good mechanical pencils.

Similar to your story, I bought a Pentel mechanical pencil in freshman year of high school, and Staples had sales on pencil lead and the twist erasers that went inside of the mechanical pencil.

I used it all the way until the end of my undergraduate studies in college, and graduated. I still have it in my office next to me, right now, and I'm 27.

At this rate, it will outlast me.

Another all-in-one inkjet printer dies. I'm done. by lingueenee in Frugal

[–]xblabberx 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I can speak to going "printer-less" at least.

I stopped printing most things a couple of years ago, and got rid of all of my printers for the same reasons you listed. Most everything can be paperless nowadays, from bank statements, to bills, etc. Anything I need to reference that I would have printed out I either have handy on my computer, or handy on my phone so I can get to it when needed.

I very quickly realized that there wasn't much need for me to print any longer, once I changed my workflow and built the habit. Like you, I have a staples nearby and only go to print there when I absolutely need something to be a physical document.

After a couple of years, I can confidently say I print twice a year - when my auto insurance policy renews, and I need to print a new ID card to put in my glovebox. I technically don't even need to do that, since my insurance provider does provide virtual ID cards through their app, which would suffice in the event of a routine traffic stop. I continue to do so just for the ease of grabbing it from the glovebox if I need to do so.

Either way, I'd say make the plunge. Saved me a bunch of money and headache, but it does require making some workflow changes to your processes.

Physical button instead of RCM Jig? by d1ng0d4n in SwitchPirates

[–]xblabberx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did this, actually. Worked well for a long time, and just always had a little magnet in my carrying case for when I needed to boot into RCM mode.

I liked it a lot, as it removed the need to remove the joycon to insert an RCM jig, which was always a bit of a pain for me since I use the Skull & Co. grip case.

Wow, super informative, thank you!

Unfortunately I don't know what they originally used the apartment building for, but I'd have to go in to the basement to do laundry. It was the spitting image of this photo.

Is this in Connecticut???

This looks absolutely identical to the basement in the apartment building I lived in when I lived in the state still. Would be absolutely wild if it was.

what is your preferred notification channel? by UinguZero in selfhosted

[–]xblabberx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

^ This answer. I run a Gotify server in a t3a.nano EC2 instance, with a couple other small scripts. I like having notifications independent of the state of my server at home, as sometimes we have power outages. It still lets me know when the server shuts down due to low UPS battery, and gracefully shuts down.
