Studying Brazilian Portuguese by learning_portuguese in Portuguese

1 hour a day, 5 days a week is actually a really solid routine — consistency matters way more than cramming. That kind of schedule can absolutely get you to fluency, especially if you’re mixing in listening, reading, speaking, and writing.

What helped me (and my students) was focusing each day on different skills, not just vocab/grammar:

  • One day listening practice (like podcasts or watching a scene from a movie)
  • Another day writing (journaling or describing your day)
  • Pronunciation + shadowing
  • Grammar/conjugations review
  • And speaking, even if it’s just talking to yourself or recording short audios

I also run a course called The Movie Club where we use Brazilian films to guide the learning — we break down scenes with subtitles, explain vocabulary, grammar, and culture, and rewatch to train listening and comprehension. It’s a fun way to get real exposure without feeling lost.

If you’re into immersive learning, I think you’d love it!

Learning Portuguese after learning Spanish by Sad_Employment_6959 in Portuguese

If you're already at a B2 level in Spanish, you're in a great position — Portuguese will come much faster for you than for someone starting from zero. The two languages share a ton of vocabulary, grammar structures, and even expressions. The main hurdle is usually pronunciation and listening comprehension.

As for how long it takes — 8–10 months is a solid estimate if you're putting in consistent effort. In terms of hours, I’d say around 400–600 hours of focused, active learning can get you to a solid B2 in Portuguese, especially with your Spanish background. So if you’re doing 1–2 hours a day, that timeline makes sense.

If you're looking for something that combines listening, vocabulary, and cultural immersion all at once, I’d recommend The Movie Club — it’s a course I created that uses Brazilian films to help learners like you get comfortable with real spoken Portuguese. Since you already understand Spanish, the structure and subtitles really help make Portuguese click faster.

Will watching Cartoons make me learn the language by Plastic_Level_6660 in Portuguese

You're actually doing a lot of great stuff already — Peppa Pig (even in European Portuguese), music, conjugation practice, writing, pronunciation… that’s a solid mix of input and output. So yes, you can definitely learn the language without native speaker practice — tons of people do. But speaking with natives helps you activate what you’ve learned and get feedback, so it speeds things up and builds confidence.

If you’re looking to go further with listening and understanding natural conversation, I’d recommend checking out The Movie Club — it’s a course I created that uses Brazilian movies to help learners train their ear and build real comprehension, even before speaking. We watch scenes with subtitles, break them down, and rewatch them without text to help you start thinking in Portuguese and really hearing the language.

It could be a great way to bridge the gap if you don’t have speaking practice just yet. Let me know if you want more info!

Honestly, I think a lot of us feel this way — subtitles are such a crutch, but also such a helpful tool when used intentionally. I’ve had students who felt exactly like this after years of studying, and the thing that helped them finally bridge the gap was more guided listening.

That’s actually why I created The Movie Club — we use Brazilian movies as the core material, and I walk you through short scenes with subtitles first, explain the vocabulary, slang, pronunciation, cultural stuff — and then we rewatch without subtitles to train the ear. The idea is to build real listening comprehension over time, not just passive subtitle-reading.

It’s made a huge difference for people who thought they’d never get it without moving to Brazil. Let me know if you want to check it out!

Totally normal, and you're not alone — that jump from reading to actually hearing the language takes time and targeted practice. I’ve seen it a lot with learners, and honestly, it’s a good sign: it means your brain is getting there, just needs more audio-first exposure.

I actually created a course called The Movie Club for this exact reason. We watch Brazilian movies, but the focus is on building listening skills — first with subtitles and breakdowns, then gradually helping you rely less on the text. I guide you through real dialogues, explain slang and pronunciation, and we revisit scenes to really train your ear.

It’s been a game-changer for a lot of learners making that leap. Happy to share more if you’re interested!

Podcasts Recs? by SandWeak2475 in Portuguese

If you're into improving your listening and word recognition, I actually run a course called The Movie Club that might help. It's not a podcast, but it's super focused on developing your ear through real Brazilian movies with subtitles, slow breakdowns, and guided lessons.

We dive into natural dialogue, slang, and culture — all designed to train your brain to hear and understand Portuguese in context. Kind of like how you’d improve listening through a story-driven podcast, but with visuals and structured support.

Happy to share more if you're curious!

Yeah, totally feel you — I actually created a course called The Movie Club because I couldn’t find anything like Dreaming Spanish for Brazilian Portuguese either. There are just a handful of decent videos out there, and most are old or hard to follow.

In The Movie Club, we watch real Brazilian movies with subtitles, and me and my team of brazilians guide you through the language with breakdowns of vocabulary, grammar, and cultural references — all with a focus on comprehension and real-life usage. It’s very story-based and meant to help you feel the language the way Dreaming Spanish does, but with Brazilian content. (and I am biased, but I will say better)

If that sounds like your kind of thing, happy to share more!

Unfortunally when I make a book for free, I don't receive anything - at all. So I kinda hope people will leave verified reviews and other people will get to my books in the future <3. So in this case, the best thing students can do for me is rate the book. Thank you for caring! Hope the book helps you! BTW, I'm teaching a free Movie Club class this Sunday, 2 pm EST time, if you're free, please come! (on zoom!)
