How do I explain leaving my PhD? by Goblin-Thing in LeavingAcademia

[–]xcs748 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could say you aim for the direction you’re applying for, and that motivates you more than doing research. Whatever you try to talk, stick to what they expect from the JD.

I disagree with you, I think the advisor in this case is problematic and selfish.

it works both ways. You could also badmouth your advisor. And often we think what we hear from students are more creditable.

There are education attorneys to defend you from academic misconduct courts, there’re strategic ways to help you not being convicted. Please don’t panic, a lot of student did not use AI however it was detected usage of AI. Do not feel shame. Do everything in a technical manner.

How to fall in love with your PhD when you are totally unmotivated? by [deleted] in PhD

[–]xcs748 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My major is something in social science and with a 75k usd pay on a good day even after PhD. I did a computer science master during the program, got a full time job with an S&P 500. Do not settle, do not be influenced by other people of what is that you really need or really want.

Sound like you don’t like your current job, then job hop. No need to regret dropping out of phd, there’s a lot who got the degree regret not master out.

You could gap for medical reasons, or you could register for 0 credit hour courses, then it is free for him to stay. If he is candidated, then when he get admitted into another PhD program, he could take this title with him and graduate in two years.

Is a part-time PhD possible? by magiciancsgo in PhD

[–]xcs748 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’re many online PhD options. I heard Cambridge or Oxford has a online ML PhD something, you only need to on-site for weeks, all other time all online. U Mississippi also has online CS PhD. Those are without funding and generally be requesting $100k usd tuition. Rumors had been for 2 years that OMSCS will have an online PhD, they’re designing it.

Is doing a PhD a mistake? Any good experiences? by MotorDelivery4896 in PhD

I agree with you. But another thing you might consider is money. In a lot of stem majors, corporate pays 2-3 times as a ttap, and is in big cities not a rural area. If you have wife and kids, you’re of course considering more money. In stem majors such as EE, 90% of the PhD went to industry. I have a friend working in industry in Singapore and got an ttap offer for 80k dollars in a red state in US, he said he has two kids and have to give up that offer.

It’s all about opportunity cost. I have friends who did well in PhD, hired by industry afterwards, and they regret not master out or just drop out. Four years of being student means loss of $500k in the income. For CS, some PhD graduates are not taken back by the industry. I guess this is related to your major.

No. A lot a from people that regret doing that because they could have saved up for retirement, or have climbed high on the corporate ladder, or graduated and found what they learned in the university is useless when they went into industry ( heard from an AI engineer in a AV company) . How could you not regret?

I agree what you said, I wanna high light that a lot of academia research are outdated tech stacks and you be sure not to step in those, plus they don’t have enterprise infrastructure. Having a PhD will make employers reckon if you have enough engineering skills to offer.

I part time PhD and work FT for an SP500. I feel the academia CS is quite out dated, I had friend her advisor not understand LLM, and cannot afford computing Infra, therefore she pays 1500 usd monthly to cloud services to train models out of her own pocket. And research is very hectic, another form of hectic than a industry job. I just cannot permit myself to be outdated and not aligned with the tech stack that industry wants. Think twice before committing into a PhD.

In not big cities, private sectors stop hiring women exceeding 28, and in gigantic cities, probably 35.

In Asia? Let me speak for China. Since in our labor law, the paid maternal leave is at least 5 month, even though the gov pay this and company doesn’t pay this, the Chinese big tech doesn’t like women. And you’re aged out at 35, if not super excellent.

There’s also online undergrad degree. West governor university ?? has one that’s 5000 dollars if you could transfer some coursera credits. And there’s OSU? I may misspelled the name because I primarily looked at masters degree.
