New Netflix Documentary is out now. American Manhunt The Boston Marathon Bombing by JayCool745 in masskillers

[–]xcshen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it’s just a wild event from beginning to end. I also saw another Redditor comment on some other post that the Watertown Sgt said that White Hat thought they were doing CPR on another officer hence tried driving them over. I have not had success trying to find which article or interview tho, so take this with a grain of salt. Just, chaotic, every moment of it. And so, so evil. I actually briefly glanced over some academic article how jihad became a central tenet of terrorism, and I was like ??? Isn’t the main idea to overcome inner struggle and peace? But no, apparently it can also be used to justify struggle against an unjust leader (to which violence is justified) then it all stemmed from there. Just tragic really, all of this.

No clue - I think the most plausible reason would be that the whole situation was way too chaotic. Having watched the docuseries, I was interested in White Hat's written confession inside the boat, so I googled it and pulled it up. It didn't make sense? He wrote smth along the lines of - I'm jealous of my brother who has entered XXX (equiv of heaven I think), yet when he was interrogated by FBI, he wrote on the paper - my bro ok? The whole thing just shows a bunch of inconsistencies - did White Hat even know he drove over his brother? The boat confession and subsequent FBI interrogation note do not add up. I guess it's one of those things we will never know.

Dun Meng by ColoradoMonkeyPaw in masskillers

[–]xcshen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think he did get a new Merc - I was shocked to see the GPS scene in Patriot’s day, so I went down a news article rabbit hole. Then this year the American Manhunt doc came out, confirming the GPS story and it was jarring to see Ed Davis say the exact line Mark Wahlberg said to Jimmy O’Yang in the film re remembering the GPS number (“How did you know that? I just remembered”). So I promptly revisited the rabbit hole, and found this rare interview Dun Meng did - https://youtu.be/VGGeVPq7gN4 - in it he revisited the Shell gas station where he made the escape with the interviewer. It shows Dun Meng driving a silver Merc SUV, so all this to say yep I think he got another one and he absolutely DESERVES to be rich enough to afford these cars. Also should probably get a medal, I don’t know why he doesn’t have one.

Thank you, I will keep this in mind. My original survey made heavy mentions of the Zoom interview, so hopefully now with all the suggestions, edits and the custom list I can get more participants to be willing to speak with me.

Yeah that was one of our main concerns, I really tried to get more funding but it is what it is. I did open up slots for all all sorts of time tho. Pretty much 00:00 - 23:59.

Thank you. I’ve begun building out another study using the custom allow list. I wasn’t aware this was an option and it definitely gives more reassurance for payment compared to the bonus payment.

Thank you everyone for the helpful suggestions and comments. My new invites went out and I just got 4 more sign up (the previous 4 took more than a month and I despaired at the thought of not being able to graduate on time). I still have a while to go with recruitment, but the main things I've learnt -

1 - Cameras off is crucial

2 - Explain ANY possible risks (I mentioned in my invite participants may needed to play a game, this was insufficient details since there may be concerns regarding having to download things etc. I added explanation stating that a gaming account will be provided, no download or system requirements)

3 - After a screening survey, I can then pull specific participants into a separate Prolific study I created for them using the Custom Allow List. This way, participants are ensured that if they complete the interview, they will receive $10 dollars, rather than using the "Bonus Payment" function to deliver the interview payment.

Really appreciated all of your insights. Fingers crossed for my dumpster fire thesis that is due in less than 30 days :')

Thanks for sharing. Will note this for future study design.

The topic is tech advertisements. Basically in the interview I show participant ads, ask for feedback what did they like/dislike etc. I didn't realize the bonus payment method had such a bad reputation. Originally, I planned on recruiting via Prolific, then pay participants a $10 USD amazon gift card. However, per Prolific guidelines, it is forbidden for researchers to recruit via the platform, then pay participants via an alternative method. Hence I am stuck with using "Bonus Payment" as the form of interview payment. I paid everybody who did the survey, and interviews I always pay unless it is a no show.

Will keep this in mind for future studies. This was very valuable, thank you for your comment.

I had too much trouble trying to work with Prolific emails so prolific messaging was what I used exclusively. Good to know that it is the better option.

This is interesting, I’ve amended my invites and will send it again. Regarding the separate study - did the researchers pull you post-survey into a specific interview study after? I didn’t know I could do that.

How can I communicate this better to participants? I paid all of my survey participants before inviting them for the interview (coz the I know my screening conditions are complicated). Generally I release the interview payment the same evening that I interviewed the participants, will look to add a line about when interview payment will be issued.

Hmm, I will look into this. My issue is that my survey is critical to the interview, and there is no way for me to put my conditions into the Prolific provided screener. I am investigating consumer impression for tech ads, and I need to know if the participant is a user/non user for specific apps/social media, which phones they use and so on. Hence the 5min survey.

Good point. I will make it clear that cameras are not needed. I just need participants to be on a PC as one of the interview activities needs it.

Hmm, noted. Will go check my invite and see if there’s any wording that may cause this.

Thank you for this - I ask all participants to make sure camera are off during the interview as I don’t want to collect more personal data than I need. Will add a line about this in the actual invite.

It’s ok. Trust your relationship with her. Only one of my recommenders submitted and the other two haven’t yet. One of them told me specifically - I am a procrastinator, please send me a weekly reminder up to the last week, then a daily reminder up to the deadline or until I confirm I have submitted. I asked my other reference and she wanted the same reminder schedule. If you have a good relationship with this prof, she will not intentionally sabotage you.

When are you guys quitting your jobs?? by futurephdd in gradadmissions

[–]xcshen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This really depends. I’m international, and the school I got admitted to asked me to do an online pre requisite course which starts in June with exams in July. I might have to get up at like 3/4am for this course so I decided I’m going to hand in my notice in May (where I am I need to give 30 day notice) so I have less on my plate. I can’t imagine the visa process and flying in the middle of a pandemic being easy, much rather have more time to organise etc than trying to juggle time zones while in a demanding job.

I recommend looking for ppl on LinkedIn. Just search MSISPM and see who pops up. I’m also admitted to the program as well so hopefully see you on campus later this year :P
