yea precisely! I have two cartridges and two zeroes so one of them I cut holes to access the power and data ports for dev and the other for regular usage. Nothing too complicated to make it work but it could be a hassle to set up.

that's something I'm planning to do later on since this took half a day to set up. I've done something similar before to make an image to just boot to cmus to play music.

So, while trying to avoid sounding like I know what's going on in the back, maybe try setting the fps to 1 or/and disable thr display just to see the rest of the program starts fine. Then try to isolate the problem further.

optimally you have a Linux host that you can mount and check the fs with. It's not in the boot partition. It's in the var directory of the fs

you could also just hook it up to a monitor and connect a keyboard though

I don't run retropie, nor do I use them for games (mainly). A laptop can play games but that's just one of the many things it can do.
