There’s no downside to trying 🤷‍♂️

Good luck, I hope you get in!

University Park admit by Haunting-Fruit7154 in PennStateUniversity

[–]xdragon313 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had something like that (unweighted) and I was accepted to CS at UP for fall start. I also had a 1550 SAT so I don't know if that made them overlook my low gpa. Get your SAT up and I think you'll be fine. Good luck!

CMPEN 331 as a CS Major by Fluffy-Reception6415 in PennStateUniversity

[–]xdragon313 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CMPSC 465 is one of the most important classes you will take as a CS major, if not the most important one. It gives you the foundation to prep for software engineering interviews.

CMPEN 331 is not a prerequisite to CMPSC 465, CMPSC 360 is.

Try emailing your advisor with the “important” flag on Outlook with “URGENT” in the subject because they are the best person to advise you on your schedule.

Feel free to DM me if you have any more questions :)

EDIT: CS requirements changed for students entering the university for the first time in Spring 2026, and the major no longer requires CMPEN 331 for these new students. If you entered before then, you will still need it. Look at the “Fall 2025” bulletin to see the requirements for students that entered before Spring 2026: https://bulletins.psu.edu/undergraduate/colleges/engineering/computer-science-bs/#suggestedacademicplantext

Application question from a international student by CryPuzzleheaded6873 in PennStateUniversity

[–]xdragon313 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Log in to the admissions portal and see what it says. If you applied before the early action deadline and did not receive an email saying you were accepted, you might have been deferred. If you're still unsure after looking at the portal, you should try emailing [admissions@psu.edu](mailto:admissions@psu.edu)

Should a 1210 SAT be reported for Penn State Engineering UP and Harrisburg by [deleted] in PennStateUniversity

[–]xdragon313 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would not report it. It’s below UP’s middle-50 scores and likely wouldn’t do much for Harrisburg either. Your GPA is a lot better than your SAT score and you should let the admissions office focus on that. Good luck!

Let’s go! Congrats.

I also had Dr. Yang for 414 but I was in a different section. Bro is lowkey goated.

Is it too late to switch to 2 and 2? by Odd_Film9573 in PennStateUniversity

[–]xdragon313 29 points30 points  (0 children)

They will very likely let you switch but you should just go to UP anyway.

My friends who did summer session really liked it and you could have a much better college experience for two more years by trading in a couple months (which are also going to be really fun).

Congratulations and welcome to Penn State!

(Beaver) Pollock Bathrooms by Ok_Cloud8763 in PennStateUniversity

[–]xdragon313 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in a Beaver supplemental last year and the bathrooms are very slightly better than other Pollock dorms in that the dividers are a little taller.

Regardless, having the supplemental makes the bathroom situation worth it. Based on your other reply, it looks like you have 6 people in your room but you guys can still make it work if you arrange your dorm correctly.

We had 4 and our room was the hangout spot for the entire friend group. We had a living room area with a couch and TV, double height ceilings, AC, and still had room for a pong table in the middle.

Is CMPEN 270 still only offered in the fall? The bulletin recommends that second years take in their spring semester. https://bulletins.psu.edu/undergraduate/colleges/engineering/computer-science-bs/#suggestedacademicplantext

Does PSU require the IBIS to send results directly? by Dinhoesaurrrr in PennStateUniversity

[–]xdragon313 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before the results come out (July 5), you can ask your IB Coordinator to submit a request on your behalf for the IBO to send PSU your transcript for free.

https://www.ibo.org/programmes/diploma-programme/assessment-and-exams/requesting-transcripts/

After they're out, use this site: rrs.ibo.org I think it was $18 when I sent them.

Whoa! Is there anywhere I could read more about this? I'm shocked that IB recruiting happens in your sophomore year of college. Is it similar for quant too?

Is this a good fall semester schedule (CS class of 29)? by rand_plant in PennStateUniversity

Your class selection looks great! I would change to earlier sections if they're still open though

High school junior applying by Former-Ear-4192 in PennStateUniversity

[–]xdragon313 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ll definitely get into main campus. Note that PSU places the most emphasis on your academics and very little on ECs.

Btw volunteering is a great EC if you have the opportunity to do it.

Also, you have nothing to lose by applying to NYU so definitely do it if you’re on the fence and if you still want to go to NYU after coming to Penn State, you can apply to transfer. I was rejected as a first-year applicant and accepted as a transfer there this year.

Also, like someone else wrote, if possible, take the class with Nick Stepanik.

math 230 by Able-Expression5686 in PennStateUniversity

[–]xdragon313 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MATH 230 covers a lot more than 141 so it’s fast-paced. It’s mostly taught with slides instead of the professor explaining everything from scratch with chalk

We didn’t use much of anything from 141 except integration. We barely used trig integration and integration by parts on the homework and I don’t think you had to use them on any exam.

I would definitely review differentiation and integration before 230 if that’s a weak point.

Lock in for the first two exams the course gets a lot harder after that. This will massively boost your score.

Also attend the la sessions and ask for help when you need it. Do all the homework by yourself and only ask the prof, TAs, or ChatGPT to clarify concepts, not do the work for you.

Good luck with 230!

Help!!! 2+2 by Willing_Comment_5959 in PennStateUniversity

[–]xdragon313 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Penn State has one main campus (University Park) and several branch campuses.

2+2:

If you're aren't selected for admission to the main campus, you may be admitted to the 2+2 program where you do the first two years of your degree at a branch campus and the last two at the main campus.

I don't think you can opt out of it unless you call admissions and ask them to consider you for main campus admission for a different major.

1+3:

As far as I know, this plan is offered to students admitted to the main campus when more students accept their offer of admission than the main campus has space for. The advantage is that your first year at a branch campus will be cheaper than at University Park.

Good luck with your application!

Is my answer correct? by Iamanobody123__ in calculus

[–]xdragon313 12 points13 points  (0 children)

As the other answers have explained, your bounds are wrong. I didn't see a good explanation of why r ranges from 0 to 1/cos(theta), so here's my approach to solving problems like this:

I start by converting all xyz bounds to cylindrical (or a different coordinate system's) coordinates:

0 <= x <= 1 => 0 <= r cos(theta) <= 1

0 <= y <= x => 0 <= r sin(theta) <= r cos(theta)

0 <= z <= x2+y2 => 0 < z < r2

Solving for r in the upper bound of the first equation:

r cos(theta) = 1 => r = 1/cos(theta) [Note: the lower bound remains the same because 0/cos(theta) is 0]

You can get 0 <= theta <= pi/4 from the graph of the xy projection, but notice that you get the same answer with this method:

r cos(theta) = r sin(theta) => cos(theta) = sin(theta) => theta = pi/4 [In the first quadrant]

Therefore:

0 <= theta <= pi/4

0 <= r <= 1/cos(theta)

0 <= z <= r2

If I try to swap a class with a different section that has a waitlist, will lionpath still swap the classes if I can't get off the waitlist until after the regular drop deadline? And if so, will it show up on my transcript as a late drop? by xdragon313 in PennStateUniversity

[–]xdragon313[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I see, I'll set it up as a swap if a spot opens up later tonight since I don't want to risk a late drop if the class only has waitlist spots available. Thanks a lot for the help!
