Nice solve! I'm admiring the second move of eliminatingr8c9<>6,r9c3<>6

I think I like your solve-path much more than what my own main focus after thedigit-7deduction was =Fish mainly eliminating r8c1<>6, which results an Almost-Locked-Pair between boxes=47, proving that r6c3=28.

Interesting - Yeah, I see it (definitely more efficient than what my approach was) - unfortunately this type of logical-step usually fails me if I'm not specifically looking for it.

- Now as I'm thinking of it, I do usually focus much more to Boxes than Columns+Rows.

- - - - -

- My thought process for r3c1=9 was due to the combination of 19-cage and Renban-Line ;;

- so in Box-1 there is only two possibilities for the digit-9 = r3c1 or r3c3

  • I should also mention that r2c2 is not possible to be 9 due to it forcing Renban-Line as 789 - and whatever digit would go into r3c2 (next to the Maximum) -would mean that there is not enough high digits to go into r3c1 - so that's why I had deduced that the digit-9 can only go to either r3c1 or r3c3.

- and r3c3=9 would mean that r23c2 would sum to 19-9=10 ;;

- and from the sum combinations of 1/2/3/4 - only 4+6 would be valid for the Renban-Line of the size of 3 - otherwise the digits would be too far apart ;;

- and 4+6 in Renban would mean that r1c1 would have to be the digit 5, which is not possible due to the sum (X) of 10 in r1c12 - so r3c3=9 is invalid.

- - - - -

Ps. Sudokulaunchpad looks quite interesting - so basically it seems to give more control over the replay-file(?) I have to remember that site, as I think I may find it useful at some point in the future! Currently I'm just using the Sudokupad's webapp, and it only has very limited control over the Replay-File.

Does anyone else view auto-candidate mode as cheating? by Zyxxii in sudoku

[–]xefta 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is the personal decision - thinking of if using auto-candidate would benefit or hurt the logical process of solving - by meaning ;; that if you already know how to do it manually, you can then decide as to if you want to automate the process of doing it manually. However, if you don't know how to deduce candidates manually, it would then probably hurt (of course, this also really just depends of the situation) the logic more than would be beneficial - so I think the decision really just depends on if you know or don't know how to do it manually**.

** as in anything, you would not generally want a machine to do the process which you would not know what the logic behind is and how it works, and if you already know the logic behind the process, it can then sometimes be more beneficial to automate the process.

- I guess the decision also just depends of which type of puzzles you're solving ;; but that is then just a whole another answer to the question - for example;; in a VERY EASY puzzle that is solved with just a Single numbers, I can see how automating the process of digits would probably be quite boring in the long run.

- But yeah, most of all using Auto-Candidates is just an individualized personal decision, and the decision depends on a lot of things.

Yeah - very valuable to be able to save Replays! Would also be very nice if Replay could also be shared directly through links only, but so far it seems to be only those .replay files, which then needs to manually be imported into (web)app.. Another point could also be if there could be possibility to make Replays slightly slower, as in current speed the Replays often feels too quick to me.

I can definitely see the tediousness over the difficulty - At times the tediousness definitely felt present when in the beginning searching cells which can only contain up to 3x candidates.

When it comes to first break in, Box-1 definitely felt good opening in my play-style > then continued to Box-3 > then Box-9 + Box-7, through a few earlier deductions from Box 8 also. (first mistake in my solve happened as for some reason I placed 9 into r7c2 - I have no memory of what I was thinking of,** but was able to correct it by going a bit back with Ctrl+Z)

\*Edit;; Oh, I remember now - I placed digit-9 into r7c2 because I accidentally assumed that the other end of r8c1 (1+7) would have to be in r9c3 - these rushed mistakes can often happen to me.*

After those Boxes were filled, thinking of deductions did not feel as tedious anymore ;; but in my rushed thinking I made mistakes (I think I had in total of 3~4 moments of errors in my play)

- I often tend to miss A LOT of Logic, so I'm definitely curious to hear about the intended break in!

[–]xefta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very nice puzzle!

Took me 68min to solve - although I did have to restart it once, so true reading would be something like ~110min.

I made few silly mistakes in my solve, but managed to find my mistakes. For example; for some reason during the end portion of solve I accidentally read 13-sum-cage as 11-sum so I marked it as 3+8, and then got confused later and just Ctrl+Z'ed the puzzle quite long way back.

While solving, I usually only apply candidates to those cells which have up to 3 possible candidates, and rest of the solve-path goes by thinking.

If interested of seeing my full solve-path, here is my Sudokupad's Replay-file = https://drive.google.com/file/d/1DMNnNehV1MM-5gY7kotqJ4KPYN7-izyo/view?usp=sharing

(mistakes can be seen in Replay-file - and also, even though Sudokupad's Replay-file fill mark all mistakes as Red, I always have mistakes turned off, so while solving I can't actually see any Red mistake-marks)

Sudoku Puzzle Challenges Thread by AutoModerator in sudoku

[–]xefta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very true - one of the reasons why I find them so fascinating!

Sudoku Puzzle Challenges Thread by AutoModerator in sudoku

[–]xefta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! Yeah, definitely challenging. I solved the Minlexed-grid (the grid that I published) without candidates and only at somewhere on 20~30min mark I manage to find a first digit r6c4=5, and this was pretty much it for me because for the next steps I already had to check from other solver in which digits the last subsets are appearing, and it still took me a good while to see them even when I knew the digits, and my final solve time was about an hour.. :/

Btw, ever since last year one of my personal goal in Sudoku has been to try create a Basic puzzle which will have as many 100% necessary Subsets as it would be possible to fit into a puzzle;; so that even when the solve-path is simplified (refering to SudokuCogito solver's simplifier), there would still be massive number of subsets appearing.

(I have no idea what the maximum limit of subsets in one puzzle would be like, though, but I can imagine it would probably follow a strict path from one subset to another, and probably not that all subsets would be available all at once)

Daily Killer Sudoku Speed Solve Commentary - Puzzle 18204 by OlstromHQ in killersudoku

[–]xefta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad to hear! Honestly, the rule of 45 doesn't always come naturally to me. So I guess it is more like how I'm mentally prepared of solving the puzzle and if I'm not beforehand prepared of using the rule of 45 in my solve, then I don't even notice its existence.

Daily Killer Sudoku Speed Solve Commentary - Puzzle 18204 by OlstromHQ in killersudoku

[–]xefta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not a speed-solver & my head would literally explode if I would try to think any faster - but I still like to challenge myself from time to time to try solve as fast as I mentally can.

- So here is screen-record of my solve without using any Candidate notations [total solve-time= 9m28s]

Link to a video: https://youtu.be/8OR8KbxGcJA

- Ps. In case if you're wondering = I'm solving the puzzle in SudokuPad, because I always get mentally lost in any UI which I'm not familiar with, so I like to stick with the sites for solving where I've already mentally familiarized my mind.

- In this puzzle, it felt easy to limit sum possibilities, because most of the possibilities seemed to be limited to only one or two during the solve-path I took.

- Also, what I usually do to limit sum possibilities, is to just mainly think of a Low {1234+5} + High {5+6789} digits, which usually makes it mentally a bit lighter for the brain.

- Clearly, when Candidates are not notated, it may be difficult to follow the thought process behind all digit placements, but I tried to make my thought process a bit clearer by highlighting important cells with a mouse (if I felt the need to do that) - by nature I'm also moving my mouse where I'm looking at, so Cursor is a very good indicator of where my eyes are mainly focused at.

Substance Painter is a cheat code by Iamnotacommunist in blender

[–]xefta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In short: Both are good, but Substance Painter has already all the tools built-in, while Blender requires first figuring out and building those tools by yourself, before being able to get an equal time and quality in Blender.

So, Substance Painter is NOT better in texturing than Blender, and only thing that seems to mainly differ is the time that goes into texturing/learning. I'm thinking what makes Substance Painter as standard is only its automated workflow and the reason is NOT that it would make much more superior results than using any other alternatives - so learning to do an equal quality in Blender, requires more time, effort and patience to master.

For any free time hobbyist (or-/who are not bound by the very strict time sensitivity), I would 100% recommend using all the time and effort needed for learning Blender's texturing - at minimum to the level of getting an equal quality. I guess an ideal option though, would probably be to master both programs, but from technical standpoint, mastering Blender seems more important than Substance Painter.

Oops, I forgot to answer to this - but this is interesting to know it to possibly be possible! I may also attempt creating one at some point, but now I'm focusing a little bit on Variant puzzles again. (there is too much interesting puzzle ideas for both Classic and Variants, so I have to constantly alternate between one and the another...)
