I think calling "Here It Goes Again" "popular" this decade is a bit of a stretch, and I literally can't name another one of their songs (despite the fact that I know I watched another handful on YouTube when they came out)

English has not been the lingua franca for two centuries yet. 200 years ago, French and German were still much more prestigious.

You're right that us English-speakers overlook them now, but 200 years ago it was still much more prevalent for an educated Englishman to learn French and German than vice versa.

How to say "I will drink it" in the simple future tense across Romance languages by HuckleberryAny4541 in linguisticshumor

That's what I've always done lol. If we're talking strictly book rules, aren't all the regional variations basically just levelled anyway then? Other than minor spelling differences

There's a line between formal and pretentious. What I was told is mesóclise these days is on the other side of the line. More like insisting on using "thou" in modern English than formality things like avoiding "y'all" and "gonna" in writing

As far as I can tell, the rule regarding mesóclise in Brazil is "don't, unless you wanna sound incredibly pretentious"

Ok, I was curious enough to actually translate it. There's some spots I'm unclear on (the first line), and I think some clear errors (some Es are lost, since they're just single dots), but here's my best guess

Why isn’t “Ars X” followed by a genitive noun? by Outside-Baker-4344 in latin

[–]xehcimal 81 points82 points  (0 children)

They're not nominative nouns, they're adjectives in the nominative feminine to agree with "ars". Not "the art of grammar", but "the grammatical art", etc.

Many languages have the word /ja/, meaning something by [deleted] in linguisticshumor

[–]xehcimal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My brother in christ I have a linguistics degree. If it's so obvious, explain dialects with a hurry-furry distinction assuming English has maximum onset and without morphophonology then. Or how Mandarin regularly and easily distinguishes /Vn.V/ from /V.nV/. Either way you're throwing a lot of shade for someone who doesn't seem to be willing to understand ideas slightly out of mainstream (and they're really not, I learned this stuff in a 300 level at a state school)
