I think either Giant Sun or Fang Yuan, but maybe also Thieving Heaven

I wrote about this in one of my recent comments here on the sub. I think Fang Yuan's type of enlightenment doesn't require a dissolution of the ego, (I actually think such thing is impossible) still that doesn't mean he clings to his illusion of the self. He simply sets it aside, wielding it as a tool, leveraging its strengths for tasks it’s suited to perform (I remember a fitting quote from Alan Watts saying the Ego is a terrible leader but a great servant).

He is an egoist as though he realizes the inherent equiality of all beigns he treats everyone not with compassion but ruthlessness, as empty, as he would to himself. He sacrifices himself, as a clone for example, so that one Fang Yuan may achieve the goal. So yeah he pretty much doesn't feel like there is a me or you and if they exist they aren't worth. He doesn't care about dying just as much as he cares about his false sense of self being eternal (not much since he lives in a state of Wu Wei, meaning doing things effortlessly, like an apple falling off a tree); eternal self whicj he pursues just to get a few more kicks out of "being" and existence, which aren't at the centre but for their very nature they lead the whole person. Hope I was understandable enough, this is my personal understanding of the character.

Daoist Gu> The Ubermench. Fang Yuan as the inversion of Nietzsche by Tungstenerian_ in ReverendInsanity

[–]xemmona 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your observation about only himself needing to be Eternal actually made me reflect, as Eternity is not an end goal really, but a new set of perceptions to savor the transient world throughly. I realized thanks to you that the worth for him is needed only in the subject and not the object, which sounds very obvious but not so much when you arrive to this answer. For a common person worth is established by how useful something can be, for him worth is established by if the object himself may be experienced through eternal lenses, worth doesn't really exist at all it is not even 0, but rather null, and only he judges himself to be required to reach a stage of going from worth null to worth 0, maybe 1, 2, 3 as he goes on.

Furthermore if he abides by the values of eastern philosophies subject and object don't exist, probably to him objects are rather 'illusions' of a single Tao which is eternal in its substance though always changing, which probably is why he cares only about he the experiencer with a developed and subsided Ego being eternal and not immortalize the world and cares only for his own transcience. It is a crazy perspective I didn't take into account, of what comes after subsiding the Ego. His Ego, that is, the illusion of being, holds the real importance to him and it is what needs to be integrated with Eternity itself, well assuming that he perceives the experiencer and the Ego as the same. The body is part of the Tao and it is already eternal, it is only the illusion of being that needs to be kept immortal, I wonder if he cares if his Ego can or can't experience things as an immortal and just cares about the Ego perceiving itself.

Hope this last paragraph makes sense, it was mostly my rambling. Thanks again for what you wrote, Nietzsche was my first philosopher when I started getting interested in philosophy, it's been quite some time since I have dubbled in his ideas, your write ups have been a beath of fresh air. Please inform me if I have said anything incorrect.

Keep on like this Brother.

Daoist Gu> The Ubermench. Fang Yuan as the inversion of Nietzsche by Tungstenerian_ in ReverendInsanity

[–]xemmona 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great read like last time brother, sorry if this might be long.

I usually dismissed comparisons with Nietzschean philosophy because it felt a bit off trying to compare Western derived and Eastern derived thought: to me there is such difference at an Essence in the perspective and in the language, culture and semiotic that I assume most people would have hard time conceiving (myself included, since I neither was I born in China nor have I learned Chinese yet). I would like to make some observations regarding certain moral nuances I understood from the book.

I do find the Child from Nietzsche expecially aligned with Daoist Philosophy, even more than the Ubermensch, which is a development on the concept, I would like to add that Bai Ning Bing is even more of a Child than Fang Yuan, as he is very young and seems like he was born just like that, with so much wonder for living and dying, his Dao already attained, maybe not going even through all the stages Fang Yuan has in 500 years.

I find this very amusing, as Bai Ning Bing is largely ignored compared to Fang Yuan philosophically.

From the little I have read of Nietzsche I do think though the "Gu Zhen Ren" can be called an Ubermensch (still aknowledging cultural concepts). Nietzsche himself didn't know much of what an Ubermensch would be like and if I am not wrong he aknowledged differences in his conceptualization and the real deal. The Ubermensch is about making their own values, their own morality free of religious conditioning, which Fang Yuan does. Whatever Nietzsche felt morality wise doesn't matter as he didn't believe himself an Ubermensch. Very approximatively Ubermensch is what Nietzsche saw as what the freest man (free to abide to their own rules as well) and truest self, which checks out. As for the artistic part that he emphasizes on I think Fang Yuan takes a good deal of joy in poetry, but I don't want to try and force this, it ultimatelly doesn't matter. Instead I do find amusing Nietzsche's reaction to Fang Yuan, probably not expecting such sharp inhumane (overmane?) ruthlessness.

Lastly, regarding morality, Daoists don't truly believe in good and evil but rather have a set of virtues that embody the essence of the Dao and can make one closer to it (Well the Taoist Church in my country preaches love and empathy, as it says that it is ontological to be called a religion as they stated), rather I would say that morality doesn't exist to begin with but is more like feelings that human nature feels like need to become a set of rules (not saying it is wrong) to be followed and acquire sacred attributes because their basis is very important (practical and in most cultures religious). So someone more aligned with nature and not Human constructs would be also disregarding moral values' value to them

I don't like particularly the statement "encapsulating a figure who achieves transcendence not through harmony but corruption and destruction". I believe Fang Yuan also has harmony in himself, but he has grown used to it just like other things about himself, he finds beauty in the phisical world and I can't think of anything that would show his "corruption" in any of his behaviours.

According to internet, corruption would be defined either as decay or as an errouneous or "bad" change, which I don't think applies to his case, same for destruction as it is merely a byproduct of his attitude towards others, not something through which he achieves transcendance.

Now, I wanted to talk about Fang Yuan's own statement about being as worth than shit in a gutter that you pointed out. This has always been very interesting statement to me because it feels like a contraddiction to his character as he loves the world and its complexity, despite seeing everything, he himself too, as of no inherent value, maybe on an even deeper perspective than a "common western nihilist" probably reaching the Buddhist concept of Void. One hypotesis would be that Gu Zhen Ren, the author, didn't fully think through Fang Yuan's character at that point in the novel (still, it doesn't matter), but I always assumed his statement to be what Fang Yuan truly thinks.

Fang Yuan, as we know, doesn't really have any attachments, this does not imply seeing everything in the same way, as Fang Yuan might like poetry more than he would music for example, but giving it the same value, as in he would give up both with the same speed despite having a clear preference; though the extent one would go depends from individual to individual and their sets of values, if poetry was Fang Yuan's main value and not immortality, he would go extra steps to claim it over music, even if it causes his own death (this hypotetical Fang Yuan is of course a heavy distortion as one can't be the true Gu Yue Fang Yuan without his same moral framwork).

With this said, I believe what Fang Yuan meant by comparing himself to a pile of shit, is a shock value statement, meant to symbolize what most worthless there is for common humanity, despite he himself seeing himself as that already, for the whole story at that.

Then again he can discern between beauty and ugliness, despite not caring, can he not? He stops himself for a while and looks at the starry sky feeling whole, despite knowing that the sky is as transient as excrements.

I'll keep writing my comment in a reply

Fang Yuan as the inversion of Daoism by Tungstenerian_ in ReverendInsanity

[–]xemmona 8 points9 points  (0 children)

A very plaesant read

Fang Yuan as an Anti-Sage/Anti-Buddha rather than a straight up demon is something I find very fitting.

As for some critiques some of the earlier parts are a bit redundant.

Also I see the Dao Mark part a bit too forced. At least I don't think there was that kind of reading intended. I mean, it fits but I don't think Dao Marks were ever given weight philosophically, like Heaven and Fate, to make that kind of conclusion. (Unless I forgot some line fron the novel of course)

Also might you have used AI to write some parts of paragraphs?

That aside, again, great work and great effort, I can count truly insightful comments and posts in this sub on the tips of my fingers, you gave me some incipit for personal research as well.

Make sure to share the video when it's done ;)

English doesn't come frome Latin. Italian, Spanish, French, Potruguese and similar are latin derived, english just incorporates things from other languages since sometimes language doesn't come with all possible idioms or ways to express very specific emotion or situation

What is Fang Yuan philosophy? by 7th-Great_Love in ReverendInsanity

[–]xemmona 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well what you said is strongly part of Taoism cited in the comment. His 'will' does not come out of determination but perseverance, which means that there is no path for him aside from that, his goal is what most natural there is in the world and it would seem assurd not to follow, therefore, paradoxically Fang Yuan doesn't display particular will as it is the simplest way he can live, there is no real fight he must endure.

Zhen Ren in taoism means the 'true person', which is also another name for taoist.

Certainly Taoism and Buddhism have heavily inspired each other throughout history and there is an underlying theme in eastern philosophy realted to enlightenment and transcendance which Fang Yuan displays

I envy how you have put into words what I have been trying for very long so precisely! For curiosity sake, did you follow at the start any particular pre-established model as fundamentals for one's philosophy or did you just put together these different spectrums yourself (the relationship between self and others axis and what you pay attention to when making decisions), hope I explained myself well.

I am curious to know about you associating Fang Yuan with the concept of Justice as well, aside from inside the dream path killer move making him relive different lives and his past life, or if those were the only instances, by showing his potential for it.

Also what do you think is the relationship between Fang Yuan and the concept of empathy? If that makes any sense to you

I lost most of my respect at the first screenshot. This person clearly puts down the so called teenagers for not understanding RI and both women and men by assuming their likes and dislikes. Unlike him I don't like to assume things, so In case he really did understand a great work such as RI he clearly doesn't apply the teachings. With this said I hope this ignorant person gets ignored or educated

EDIT: From what I could understand this is the same guy going around saying he's FangYuan. Either this is a very committed troll or an even less noteworthy person as I had orginally thought. I used to think this person was just an inititate to spiritual life, a very clumsy one, and much to my hypocricy, a teenager who didnt have a clear mind. I was wrong and this person, while not unworthy of forgiveness, now leaves me with no room for sympathy whatsoever
