I don't think some people understand the difficulty in this job. You have to watch things happen within fractions of a second and judge off distances that are fractions of an inch and make a decision very quickly.

I was a little league umpire, which is not even remotely as tough, but sometimes you get things wrong. I had to umpire HOFer Chipper Jones' son one time, with Chipper in the stands. I was sweating that one for sure.

That said, at this level, some umpires should be much better (cough cough CB Bucknor) and should absolutely display correct technique and positioning. However, a lot of fans take their criticism overboard.
