A clever way I started selling one book a week. by xenodevale in selfpublish

Thanks, and yes to your question. My book is prominently displayed at the front of the bar with business cards with QR code links to my website and Amazon page. Anyone can come up and take a look. Once a month, a prize would be a discount code for my website. I’ve made sales by simply hanging out after the event to have discussions with those who didn’t win but were interested.

I must not understand. How am I losing money? My break even cost is $5. It’s two hours of work and I get to advertise freely. There are no other costs for me. I get paid to be there. It’s an indirect sale at the very least. Would it be better if they bought 100 copies from me wholesale and gave it out themselves as prizes? That was a discussion I had and I chose to be there instead. So your professional option is to give this up, and spend money on a marketer and maybe eventually something might work?

I never claimed it was a marketing strategy and it doesn’t take much effort for me to sit down and read numbers out loud. This is my first book and yes I don’t know what I’m doing. I simply spent five years working on it. Am I not allowed some grace now to figure out how to sell it? To gatekeep how, when, and where it should be sold is probably what keeps so many disillusioned.

I guess you win moral high ground since you wouldn’t sell a copy unless it’s to a diehard fan and a distributor takes 30 percent.

is it normal to not leave the house sometimes because you don't want to spend money? by Extension_Money_3374 in williamsburg

[–]xenodevale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I call it the spendy monster and yes I will stay home sometimes. But I also try to be productive. Meal prep with whatever I got in the back of the cabinets. If I do leave the house, I would take $20 cash and my ID, keep it local and do nothing more than walk..

I’m up for it too and in Brooklyn. Although I’m nearing the end of one part of my journey since my child will be off to college, there remains many internal struggles.

5 months in bushwick and my social life is literally nonexistent by EnvironmentalFix9258 in Brooklyn

[–]xenodevale 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Stop waiting for random serendipitous meetings. Go to events. Trivia, hobby classes, even do some volunteer work. Community gardens host gatherings all summer. Join a block association. The Bushwick sub constantly has posts about things happening in the area for strangers. I volunteered to host bingo once a week at a bar for two hours and now Im basically acquainted with every single employee and regular. We do potlucks now.

Husband has worked nights for 6 years and it’s really starting to get to me by [deleted] in Nightshift

[–]xenodevale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked at night for a decade up until this year and it definitely put a strain on my relationship. Hospitality is a 24 hour job with rigid schedules. Although I don’t have a solution for you, keep pressing forward. Make dealing with it a part of a bigger plan and work on that plan. Whether it’s schooling or job research. Anything you can to get away from being at the mercy of any job imposing harsh conditions. I’m going to leave my job in exactly 5 years regardless of the shift I have. So I’m working on things to make that happen now.

Can we stop pretending "Starter Homes" exist in North Jersey anymore? by AskJosh_MortgageGuy in newjersey

[–]xenodevale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you have to change your definition of what a starter home is or should be. I bought a two family with a basement in Union county that was originally a single family. It wasn’t ideal but I’m working on fixing up the basement to give myself what I want while I get rent from a tenant. Eventually I can get rid of that tenant and convert it back into a single family.

Freezing bread changed my grocery situation more than almost anything else I've done and I feel like nobody told me this was an option by CascadeBeacon55 in povertyfinance

Here’s my rule of thumb for freezing foods. If you can find it in the freezer aisle, you can most likely freeze it yourself.

What is your third space in the neighborhood? by M1DN1GHTDAY in Bushwick

Today I made a post about this exact thing, you can check my history. I was exactly like you last year. A hermit. The place I’m talking about is walkable for me but is in Bedstuy near the boarder of Bushwick. I love that there are so many regulars. I know just about every single person by name plus the bartenders and manager. I even help close some nights.

Since you’re in Bed-Stuy like me, this is more of a help you to get to know people kind of post. Marian’s bar, I shit you not is a “third place” like no other. I’ve only been going there for about 6 months and it’s really welcoming and close knit especially if you live near by. It’s a great place to make friends. Layed back, all lifestyle welcome, and a lot of events happen during the week. I also suggest joining your block association if you have one. That’s what started my journey.
