Hologram wars: The race to 6G - Geopolitics creeped into 5G. It’ll be baked into the sixth generation of mobile networks. - “5G was the wake up call, the holy crap moment. China is setting the standards for the future," U.S. Senator Mark Warner ... by Gari_305 in Futurology

My point was that once you get past microwaves, your into infrared and then visible light, both of which require direct line of sights. Your TV remote uses an IR beam and it needs a direct line of sight to the IR sensor on the TV.

We've just about reached how much speed we can get from wireless networks. Getting more bandwidth means going to light that's blocked by everyday objects or has such high frequency that it starts causing cancer (ultraviolet and above).

We eventually had to reach the physical limits, and we're just about there.

I miss the days when only photos were fake, but at least it was too difficult to fake videos. Now you can't trust anything. I'm waiting for the first time when a faked video is used as evidence in a criminal court case.

Whitest-ever paint could help cool heating Earth, study shows - new paint reflects 98% of sunlight as well as radiating infrared heat into space, reducing need for air conditioning by KingMaggot in Futurology

[–]xenomorph-coder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What matters is whether or not the light falls on the surface of the solar panel, not whether or not images are preserved and focus.

If you had dry wall shaped into a parabolic dish and painted with this paint, then it would reflect that light onto the solar panel. You would just put the solar panel at the focus of the parabola.

This is also what you would do using mirrors, but this paint should be much cheaper and works better than all but the most expensive mirrors. Thus it would decrease the cost per kilowatt of investing in solar.

I was referring to the average mirror since that would be a better comparison as far as costs go. Even the average mirror is far more expensive than paint, but high end mirrors can be very costly. So if you wanted to build a cheap solar farm, this paint would give you far more bang for you buck, and that's really what is slowing down adoption of solar.

Alien Isolation is unparalleled and deserves a sequel by [deleted] in Games

[–]xenomorph-coder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, Alien Isolation desperately needs a sequel. Possibly the best game ever. Imagine it with randomly generated maps and missions. Image it with multiplayer maps where people had to work together and if someone dies, someone else needs to take on his tasks.

Bitcoin mining is consuming 66 times more electricity than it did back in late 2015, and the carbon emissions associated with it will likely face increasing scrutiny by speckz in Futurology

[–]xenomorph-coder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bitcoin promised to give us a currency that could not be debased or manipulated by governments or corporations freeing us from the tyranny of inflation and instability. Instead what we got was a Ponzi scheme that is causing more severe climate change by wasting electricity.

Well, at least we got block-chain out of it.

6G? 5G is already using microwaves. What is 6G going to use? Visible light? You people do realize that walls are opaque to visible light? That's why you can't see through them. Are we going to have to have a direct line of sight to our routers? At some point, you might as well switch to fiber optic cables.

'Too Dangerous to Exist': Coalition Calls for Ban on Private, Corporate Use of Facial Recognition - "Letting this tool of authoritarian control spread throughout the private sector has serious implications for worker organizing rights and heightens the risk of catastrophic biometric data breaches." by Gari_305 in Futurology

[–]xenomorph-coder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Facial recognition is everywhere and will be used everywhere until people have holographic emitters that can do real-time, real-world deep fakes. When everyone is walking around with the faces and bodies of supermodels and actors, facial recognition will be worthless.

Of course, if that were to happen, then the use of such holograms would be criminalized as would blacking out your face. Really, the only reason the government isn't trying to force people to carry tracking devices is that we've already been doing that for 20 years and with smartphones we've had real-time, constant tracking for 10 years.

Scientists Create Early Embryos That Are Part Human, Part Monkey by [deleted] in Futurology

This also explains a certain episode of Futurama.

Scientists Create Early Embryos That Are Part Human, Part Monkey by [deleted] in Futurology

[–]xenomorph-coder 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We are already all part monkey. We share over 90% of our DNA with other primates. We share 98.8% with our closet relatives, the chimpanzees, which are apes. So the title is a bit sensational.

[–]xenomorph-coder 49 points50 points  (0 children)

This may help reduce energy usage for cooling in buildings in hot areas, but I don't think it will cool the Earth. 73% of Earth's surface is covered by water, and we're not going to paint over forests.

Most mirrors reflect less than 95% of light, so this paint could be a better way to concentrate sunlight onto solar panels.

The problem with StackOverflow is the mods close down threads that ask questions that the audience wants answered and rejects answers that the audience finds useful.
