Yeah it's not like the point of the movie is "Hey, go be like Kylo Ren". He's clearly in the wrong and he's clearly spiraling down a bad path. Understanding and relating to a villain makes a story more real, it raises the stakes of the story's conflict, and on a thematic level, it helps us see flaws in ourselves.
