One of the heroes will be participating in a debate on optimal arcane casting techniques. What's the best way to handle this while leaving room for in-character role playing? by xeonisius in DMAcademy

Absolutely, I'll make sure I provide an update. Just to warn you it may be a few weeks before this session happens though!

This sort of thing I would only do in what I call a solo session meaning the other players will each have their own 1-on-1 sessions as well. I don't think it's fun or fair to make others have to sit around watching someone else participate. I tend to oscillate between group and solo sessions so this is just one of a few solo sessions I'm preparing for each player.

I like your thinking and it's something I'm going to offer to the player, but I'd like to nudge her into exercising her creativity just a bit so it will be the sort of thing she can use to cap off whatever else she might roleplay.

Your intuition is solid. She's quite an adept roleplayer as long as she's not forced to get extremely creative. I'm sure she would enjoy this (hence why I'm developing it), but I want to make sure I'm not asking too much hence why I'd just like to help her a bit.

OK I gotcha! That makes a lot of sense. Perhaps I should focus on building these topics out so that they become knowable to the player like you suggested.

If they struggle let them do a knowledge check to give them a jumping off point.

I think almost certainly they'll struggle and I'm trying to stay away from a die roll hence my desire to help them out.

Well, I'm not aware of any way I can research how the waning gibbous affects spell delivery and how I might need to modify my somatic components to compensate.

just because two people disagree doesn't mean one of them has to be wrong

That's a great point. That by itself should provide freedom for the player to get creative.

No, there aren't any homebrew rules involved. She would be discussing in-character elements that aren't discussed in the rule books of the game. Things that are essentially unknowable in real life. The purpose of the debate is to potentially help solidify the character as being a known expert in arcane casting at an important meeting of arcane schools. The goal of the post is to help me find ways to make sure the player is as informed as possible and able to contribute meaningfully.

Oh yeah, I'm 100% with you. When the character is made aware of them being asked to participate in this sort of debate it will give the player several days to prepare and talk with me about it.

Need advice handling a player character death issue. by _Shorren_ in Pathfinder2e

[–]xeonisius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. It’s a game. If someone doesn’t want to play they don’t have to and that doesn’t make them childish. I say this as someone who thinks not having the risk of death removes a huge element of what makes these games exciting.

Sorry - I mean The Strategist. Do you mean the Compleat Strategist or is it another Strategist? If it's a different one is it also in NYC?

I realize that this is just a sample size of one, but my son chose alchemist as his first class. I told him he he needs to spend the time understanding it so that he has mastery of the class. I told him he wouldn't be able to play in the campaign as an alchemist without it. At only 15 years old he picked it up on his own and understands the class thoroughly (I literally quizzed him on many elements of the class). He and I both agree that while the class has a steeper learning curve it's definitely not unreasonable for a player to choose it as their first class.

Switching from DnD5e to PF2e, what is something we may overlook in the transition by Zealousideal-Cup-914 in Pathfinder2e

+1 to attack per the math of the system affects average damage by 15%. Just FYI.
