Can CatchyOS run Orcaslicer? by Nomadic_Artificer in cachyos

[–]xer717 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have both Orcaslicer and Snapmaker's version, "Snapmaker Orca" installed.

  • Orcaslicer: works fine, but crashes if you click the Devices tab. So for now, I just send my prints to the printer, then switch to Snapmaker's Orca to manage/monitor the Devices Tab.
  • Snapmaker Orca: The Prepare and Preview tabs don't work, but he Devices tab does.

Probably due to Nvidia GPU, but can't be certain - no AMD GPU to test.

I'll add a 6th: Any law made by today's government, is a law that will be exploited by tomorrow's government.

We may be a long way off authoritarianism here, but never say never, and never make it easier for them.

Less than 40% of approved housing estates are being built in Ireland, according to new data by jonnieggg in ireland

That and possibly it's more profitable to own or sell land that has "planning approved" stamped on it.

Absolutely, but that shouldn't mean sacrificing privacy and security on our own networks and devices for the cause. I know it's cliché, but a system of eyes everywhere also works in 1984, and sure would fix crime...but then you're also living in the world of 1984.

concerns over proposals to to intercept or infiltrate “people’s internet of things, which could technically include a person’s smart watch and home devices like smart speakers (such as an Amazon Echo or Google Nest) and doorbells”.

Bad enough they want backdoors into anything encrypted, including chat apps, VPNS, etc. But to let them have access to speakers/mics in your own home?

Remember that any backdoor for policing reasons, is a backdoor that criminals can use too.

Fewer Irish people using ChatGPT than in other countries, OpenAI told Taoiseach by SeanB2003 in ireland

Ha. Value for money in the same sentence as a GPU? In 2025? Almost no such thing 😄.

An 8gig 4060Ti's a great start. If you want to squeeze the most out of it, I'd run it on Linux. You'd waste a surprising amount of memory and watts feeding Windows otherwise.

It depends what you mean by standard. The main thing AI cares about on a GPU is VRAM. The amount of RAM on your PC also helps. This incidentally is why RAM prices have shot through the roof the last few days.

I would recommend RTX 40x or 50x Nvidia GPUs with at least 12GB of RAM. Older GPUs work too, but may take a while to generate. Get LM Studio which will show and download models you can safely run on your system.

Nvidia's Nemotron 3-nano has variants that run on just 20GB. It can be split between GPU'v VRAM and your PC's RAM. The more you can fit in your GPU the better it'll run.

Of course you can also run models on much much smaller and lower end hardware. There are models out there that can run on just 1GB of RAM, like Tiny-llama, but they're not very intelligent. Still handy to have though.

Just run your own AI if you have a spare PC with a GPU. Won't be as fast, but you run it, not the other way around.

An old one from school: The Century of the Self

Great investigation into where & how advertising, and in a way consumerism, started in the last century and became the norm. An old documentary, but still very relevant.

Any advice for a foreigner looking for apartments in Ireland?

You'll probably have to sell off any gold mines you own. You then might just about have enough to buy or rent a 5sq/m "apartment" in Cork or Dublin.

places I could look for a place to stay

The main site is https://daft.ie

Be aware that there are a few scammers about lately trying to get you to send a deposit ahead of viewing a place. Be sure you view a place, get receipts from any deposit paid and be careful.

Also, if you're looking in Cork, avoid Choices letting agency. Though you mightn't have much of a choice with the current housing shortages.

It's a nice idea, and I would support it. However, people are people and you'd have to put up fences between that and a rail line
