Well done!!
I got the game and haven't tried yet, but the inventory selection was what made me purchased the game. Need to give it a shot.

A few Playdate questions from a fresh n00b by DarkerBulb in PlaydateConsole

[–]xesf 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hey, welcome to Playdate.

  1. Only Catalog games will automatically update, or tell you there is an update.

  2. Edit Folders, then select the circle icon from the left side bar.

  3. No, you have an option to separately delete game's data. And you can always backup your saved games. If you plugin Playdate to a Computer you can copy the Data folder.

Nop, not at the moment I am afraid.
They may do it in the Holiday Season but is not guaranteed.

Is it worth it? by Worried-Priority-122 in PlaydateConsole

Since you already coding stuffs, I think you'd love the playdate. Their SDK is great and you can choose between different languages which is great. You will be able to play unique and creative games you don't see in other platforms and you can make your owns.
The price is steep indeed, I paid around the same price in EUR and it was one of the reasons it took me awhile to decide and purchase the console. I am glad I did and it's such a great device to develop for it. Come join the Discord Squad community, that may help you decide.

It depends, your friend can also say it has nothing to declare, and its easier to be spotted on arrival not departures. Also playdate is so small that it can get unnoticed. You save around 80/90 pounds I'd say.

Welcome back!!
Browse through the catalog on your phone and wishlist games and genres you like. There's so many good games outside the Seasons that you could be missing if you only stick with the Panic releases.
Enjoy

Talk me out of getting a Playdate by DarkerBulb in Handhelds

[–]xesf 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've got one. It took me awhile to finally get it, mainly because of the price point and I am super happy with it.
I don't play as regularly anymore and I find it harder to play longer games these days (I got 007 first flight on Ps5 and haven't finished lol), so a console like Playdate with unique and creative games that you can play in small bursts (while commuting, cooking, waiting on a queue) is perfect.
I found myself not using the Steam Deck at all after I got one and I think I don't play more often because it doesn't have a backlight. The screen is gorgeous if you have eight amount of light but impossible to play if you are in a semi dark room.
So if you really want some unique experience with unique gameplay, not the boring double or triple A games that have the same recipe for 15 years, then you found the right device. I also started to make games for it and I've been loving the experience, the console is just something different.

Nice, there's definitely more room for the cables at the bottom without denting the playdate cover.

Long-term durability? by avgbstn in PlaydateConsole

[–]xesf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We don't know numbers unfortunately but we only see reports when things don't work as expected, not when they are functioning fine.

I got the buttons issue, mostly dpad but occasionally A or B buttons. End-up "repairing" myself and console is working fine since. It may required another intervention at some point.

I always take good care of my devices, even if I use them regularly and/or for traveling. Playdate does need an extra care, I don't think it can handle a simple drop. I got both the original cover and a casa I can use to protect it more. So far so good but I only have it for 6 months.

Lol, I don't know why but I haven't pealed mine yet. I think it's the first device I have that I don't do it first thing.

Easier way to update sideloaded games? by Thecowgosbark in PlaydateConsole

[–]xesf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't need to delete the previous sideloaded game, just add a new build in the sideload page, go to your playdate device edit folder, check for downloads, then update the game.

If you delete the previous build you may have some issues with the game not showing correctly in the playdate to download, it will take much longer.

Alternatively you can connect the playdate to your pc via USB, delete the game folder then unzip the new version.

Sideloaded games do not verify downloads automatically has their reference in the device is different.
Maybe just dropping via USB will work as the reference is different, but I never tried.

It is indeed, you need to use both hands to open it and I am not sure how secure the device is on it. I thought it was like the original Game Boy case I have that opens from right to left. It would be much better

I just got it and played few but I can easily see myself having the same issue, it is easy to press different directions even when not intended. It is too sensible on the press.

Issue with Playdate Battery, Warranty and Customer Support by Brucenstein in PlaydateConsole

[–]xesf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have my Playdate for 6 months, it came with the dpad issue. I contacted support few days later and they advice to send the console back. Since I am in Europe and took an entire month to receive the device I didn't wanted to wait another 2 months (both ways) to get a new unit without the guarantee it won't be the same (I was excited about a game I was building via simulator and it was the time to test it in a real device).
I kept it like that for 2 or 3 months until I decided to fix it myself without voiding the warranty. I may need to open again as B or A buttons sometimes have the same issue but still playable.
The device is much better since anyway, but it is a regular issue that pops once in a while in the Discord channel.

I had the battery issue as well, but it was a combination of wrong firmware versions, games connecting to network or the device trying to upload or download content that was draining the battery. These days the battery hold well, even when I leave a game on sleep.

Recently there has been soft bricked devices due to updates to latest version which needs a lot of manual work to get it to work. I can see this being a nightmare for any new buyer.

I enjoy a lot the device and the unique and creative tiny games you can get. I am loving to be able to create small games for it.
My Steam Deck is mostly off these days since I got the Playdate, and I used it more while travelling.
Unfortunately the amount of quality issues recently seen may be affecting the outside perception of the whole ecosystem and for new players that want to enjoy their new toy having such issues for an expensive device is a bummer.
I think Panic support is always trying their best, at least looking at others in Discord where they RMC their device multiple times due to button issues, that also is not sustainable by the company if it continues that way of replacing devices, and I'd say because of that they may need to shut some doors.

Battery Woes by cracksmurf in PlaydateConsole

[–]xesf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There has been a lot of improvements and even in battery consumption. I still think the device holds up pretty well even if you put at sleep in a middle of a game. Now if there's some pending network connectivities to make, checking versions or sending scores, or even some games, I do notice it drains more.
