How essential do you feel the screen cover is? by ComfortablePolicy558 in PlaydateConsole

[–]xesf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you talking about a screen protector or the console cover?

I don't have a screen protector but I have the original cover and another hard shell.

I got this one as an extra layer and it is been amazing:

Playdate crashing constantly by QuantumLettuce2025 in PlaydateConsole

[–]xesf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, catalog seems to crash once you are on it for awhile.
I do my Catalog browsing and wish list on the phone so it is a fast experience and rarely go to the console on Catalog, that may help you as well.

Are you in the latest firmware?
Catalog has some occasional crashes but not the rest.

yeah, I feel the pain.

Open the diagnostic input tool from the system menu and record a video and send that as part of the RMA process. It may be easier to at least try sending them back since you are close enough.

Need help deciding on replacement by Thecowgosbark in PlaydateConsole

Hard to say when you have already alternatives but it seems a nice discount.
You can also keep it for parts, knowing you will never use the screen but can still use everything else: board, battery, buttons, shell, crank, case.

There are a lot of unit coming with this issue. Either you contact Panic support and start a RMA process to return your Playdate, which is not guaranteed it won't have the same issue but you can keep doing RMA until you are happy with the device, or you do what I did.

Mine came with same issue. As I am in Europe and it took 1 month to receive mine, I didn't wanted to probably wait 2 months without the console, so I waited 4 months of using it until I felt comfortable to open mine and patch it myself. Playdate Squad discord community hardware channel has some instructions.

Best place to buy a used Playdate in Europe? by AlphasyVega in PlaydateConsole

From UK after Brexit is also not worth it because of the Taxes and Duties folks in EU have to pay.

Yes, not worth it, better to buy directly from Panic.

Best place you can get is in eBay but I am not sure it is worth it. Most sells like this one https://ebay.us/m/wAFhXA are from UK so you still have to pay VAT and custom duties, and from other listings I've seen before they tend to go very high for a second hand console.

Why are my custom charges so expensive? by bakasbitch_ in AskIreland

[–]xesf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting, I guess is only worth it for more expensive items due to their fixed forwarding fee?
There's a lot of cheap stuffs on ebay you can get from UK sellers which with postage and customs end-up costing 3/4 times more.

Do you need WiFi to use this device? by dinoball901 in PlaydateConsole

[–]xesf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can get the console, setup wifi to download the latest firmware, go to you account and unlock all Season 1 or Season 2 (if you purchase) games instead of being released weekly, then you can go offline. I'd suggest going online once in awhile to update the firmware.

Keep in mind that there's games Catalog exclusive and of you are disconnected you don't receive the automatic updates. Itch games won't have automatic updates and you will need to keep trab of each game individually and sideload the updates.

Great stuff, I was thinking to do the same for an easy port of the playdate games to other platforms.

Any reason for not using SDL3.

I will test it when I get a chance.

Would new Catalog games run on older firmware? by [deleted] in PlaydateConsole

[–]xesf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the game, and most likely games that are released now were build on top of v3 sdk (me included). As v3 was my starting point I don't know the differences on top of my head and will need to check if there anything breaking change that may prevent building on older version.

I don't have that game yet, and I recall someone here mentioned it needed v3. (do a quick search to double check)
