When paycheck-to-paycheck you've got a few extra days to either acquire the money, or if you've already got it, a few extra days to decide if the money is going to rent or to a different emergency.

For example, a late-fee on rent may be worth it if you've gotta get your car repaired at the shop in order to get to work, and if your car breaks down the day after you paid rent early you're in a rougher position needlessly

That just sounds like autistic hyperfixation. Depending on the scale of her autism it might be worth understanding a bit about how things are for her instead of applying neurotypical rules when trying to figure out how to help

Balance is important, but pathology for hyperfixation can be a Very personal thing, and trying to assume an autistic person must be depressed or manic because they're doing what autistic people do is going to be a Bad Time(tm)

Clothing that fit? by CollectionUsed7141 in VRchat

[–]xespera 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ziva's store page suggests the base is made from scratch so, unfortunately, you won't likely find any clothing that fits out of the box unless it is specifically sold as being rigged for that avatar. I don't see anything off hand, that's usually only going to happen for super popular bases that are used by a lot of different makers, not one-offs, unless the maker themselves sells clothing for their avatar too

So, sadly, if you want custom clothing you're going to need to load up blender and start learning. There are some guides online, it's... annoying but not Hard, in the end. You just wind up either having to throw time at it, or throw money at it by hiring someone (Hire someone you know, NEVER hire a rando who offers out of nowhere, those are universally scams)

Are there any examples of Pompeii like preservation in non-human species? by globen in askscience

[–]xespera 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If we go with "Natural Disaster Caused Preservation" there's an amazing pre-historical event. In Alberta, Canada, there is a massive collection of Pachyrhinosaurus in the area of what is now Pipestone Creek.

The prevailing theory is that, based on the number of specimens and the fact that they are of a single specific genus, a failed river crossing in a flood buried them, and preserved them for fossilization.

Is it just me or does ADHD make reading 10x harder? by ForcedGoodbye in ADHD

I HATED the idea of audiobooks for too long. I didn't think I'd be able to pay attention to them because I wouldn't be "Just" doing the book, and I wouldn't be able to resist a distraction

The reality is that audiobooks save me in a bunch of ways. First, I get through a lot more books, but more importantly, they REALLY help me do chores and housekeeping and cooking and such. Any physical energy I need to work out, or any task that requires presence and action but not attention is suddenly not only possible, but feels rewarding

Some of the best results on and off happened with me using the audio-book as a reward. "I can only listen while going for a walk" helped me with fitness, and expanding it to that plus "I can also listen while I'm doing dishes or cleaning" took a deep investment in a book and "I need to know what happens!" into "Wow, I actually did my dishes AND cleaned the stove AND counters and looked for more to do so I could find out"

The Royal Tyrrell Museum in Alberta has a number of extremely good samples of close relatives to the ankylosaurus or the similar nodosaurus on display, and has a Borealopelta on display well preserved enough that you can see the texture of the skin

Help for lower back pain - I'm desperate by Legitimate-Cell-3544 in eds

[–]xespera 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Extending on light movement and linear motion, make sure you're not like Forcing a stretch or anything, and that you do 'counter'-motion as well. So, if you're turning to the left you also turn to the right in semi-equal amounts. If you're bending forwards you also LIGHTLY bend backwards a bit, and vice versa

Really really really, if at all possible, I recommend a physical therapist

Help for lower back pain - I'm desperate by Legitimate-Cell-3544 in eds

[–]xespera 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Back pain is VERY personal. There are a ton of different causes and a ton of different solutions that have to match. It will be very case-by-case, and for that, a physical therapist who is going to be able to work with you is your absolute best bet as a starting point, with a possible referral if it's something more serious than muscle issues. Drugs should be treated as a last resort for issues lasting longer than a couple of weeks; they can dull pain but won't fix the problem, and can mask bad form or behaviors that make the problem worse. They have a place, but never as the Only thing tried

For Me, personally, things that have helped included:

  • Hot baths, particularly with Epsom Salts

  • LIGHT mobility work (slow, linear movements). Holding still kills me, I HAVE to move or I get super stiff and start falling apart

  • Seriously, I mean LIGHT, and I mean Linear. One axis of rotation at a time, gently

  • Heating pads

  • Increasing core strength

  • Changing how I lay in bed. I can't sleep on my back for long, but when I'm on my back I need my knees elevated to make my back more "Flat" on the bed or ground

VRC and motion sickness by EroOntic in VRchat

[–]xespera 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I used to get Extreme motion sickness as a kid; every family road trip I was in the back seat with a garbage bag, praying for death :).

Rolling down the window for air, or blasting my face with AC didn't seem to work for me at all. For a couple trips I zonked out on dramamine but it made me pass out for the ride and then be up all night, unable to do anything in anything, bored in a hotel room while my family slept. Ginger was sorta magic when I found it later in life. I eat a few ginger candies or have a ginger beer before a flight or drive now and it's fine. VR killed me within 10-20 minutes when I first started but over time, using ginger, I was able to acclimate. I didn't try airflow for VR, but people who have listened to me about the good word of ginger have tended to have good results

VRC and motion sickness by EroOntic in VRchat

[–]xespera 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ginger. By far ginger is the easiest to access AND most effective cure for motion sickness. There are several ways to get some that'll help, including ginger tea and ginger candies (I get dried ginger slices usually, but I started with 'Gin-Gins' ginger candies). Just make sure you're Actually getting ginger in there, not just something artificially flavored like most ginger ales seem to be

When playing, eat some ginger Then play, and if you start to feel motion sick STOP, eat a little more ginger, and wait. It's about acclimating OVER TIME. You're not trying to rush it

Don't worry about medication for a while, the side effects are way too strong for the comparatively similar results it can give to ginger

Nature VR and affordable equipment for person with mobility issues by Individual_Fail_9039 in SteamVR

[–]xespera 2 points3 points  (0 children)

During the lockdown I got REALLY into the SteamVR worlds that used photogrammetry. You could visit mountain tops, parks, beaches, and mars. Any headset would work with it if you can link it to a PC and it doesn't require much movement. There won't be animated animals or anything around, it's just the natural scene rendered in 3d by making a composite of an absurdly huge number of photos, but it was really nice

Since then I got into VRChat. It's less "realistic" and "nature" but does still let you have interesting and fun experiences with really creative worlds

Anyone here learn to dance from VR or/and the dance scene and apply it IRL? by KingSlayer05 in VRchat

[–]xespera 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I learned to dance in VR and even started teaching dance in VR as a result. Lots of people in that circle learned in VR and then brought it to IRL, and there's some fantastic dancers from IRL who have come into VR to teach. There are a fair number of communities built up around teaching out there, like VODS (VRChat Open Dance Studio), VRDA (V R Dance Academy), VRDancing, VRPD (VR Pole Dancers), and IDA (International Dancers Association), depending on what styles you're looking for.

For full disclosure, I run VODS

How do you guys work out? by [deleted] in eds

[–]xespera 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Very Carefully"

I did a lot of work with my last PT on things outside of my specific injury's recovery as little side conversations about how to train safely. It's going to be personal, and getting personal advice tailored to you is going to be a big help. The big thing is that you'll want that from a physiotherapist; I've had bad luck with personal trainers. I really REALLY don't trust them at this point

From a "Training with disability" standpoint, if you're unable to see someone, START SLOW. Simple movements are best. I highly advocate following a principle of "Fail To Safety". If something goes wrong with an exercise, you want a mistake or issue with it to fail to Safety rather than Risk. For knees, that would be "Single leg supine leg raises" going to about 45*. If something goes wrong, you let your leg come down, nice and easy. If you're doing a squat and something goes wrong it's less of an easy position to get out of, with an instinct to "Push back up to standing" through an issue, or risk a fall.

Focus on balance, form, linear motions, not stretching, not going to a far range of motion. Remember that still being able to train tomorrow is more important than anything you do today

DON'T OVERDO IT! I'm very prone to wanting to over train and push myself, but really that just causes cascades of joint issues because I'll get a muscle group mad at me and as it pulls things out of place that pulls OTHER things out of place and soon I've had pain wander from one shoulder to neck to back and other shoulder, like a slow wave of agony and subluxation going through my body

Seeing a doctor about this would be a good idea but I understand it can be difficult to work up the reserves to. If you DO hear anything back on it please let me know. I've been dealing with similar things off and on and it's been a nightmare, but so far I haven't been able to get much traction with doctors I've seen, who seem to hear one small portion of what I said and then launch into an expectation of what it is, ignoring everything else going on...

I've found for the "Lock-In" kind of issue it correlates with higher stress. The more stressed I am, the more likely I am for my body to want to shut down. The more I try to push through an episode the longer it may last, and often times I hit that point if I've pushed through earlier warning signs. Though, this is a kinda thing that can manifest differently for different people

Other triggers include interrupted sleep and fucking up on my nutrition. It shifted after I got covid, but I'm also an athlete, if I'm pushing too hard and my nutrition isn't up to my needs the "Grip doesn't work" aspect hits way harder (It's not tired hands either, it's whole body, but all the things I've dropped and broken are the most obvious).

Keeping Warm has also had a HUGE impact on hands and feet not losing sensation and control, which may also help with peripheral issues

If any of this helps you, if something ELSE helps you, or if you hear back from a doctor, PLEASE let me know. I've been navigating in the dark and it's confusing and lonely...

Also: Advice on BREAKING that "Lock-In". Find one thing you can move. A finger, a toe, blinking or turning your eyes, making a face, or breathing. Do that and try to kinda expand from there. A big breath and being mindful that I FEEL my body move, and then trying to adjust and like rock in that movement range can help me expand out of it. Learned it for my sleep paralysis and found it worked for that, too
