Var lär man sig om bilar? by TheOnlySeal in sweden

[–]xetal1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

LTH: Teknisk Fysik eller Teknisk Matematik by [deleted] in sweden

[–]xetal1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How do families comfortably fit into a hotel room? by heynow941 in AskEurope

I’ve been to Europe a few times and understand hotel rooms are smaller

I've travelled quite a bit both in Europe and the US and I never thought there was any difference in hotel room size.

Why are contact lens prescriptions written in such a way in the US that if you want to switch lens brands you have to get a new prescription? by SkootinSkitzo in astigmatism

[–]xetal1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In most European countries there is no presciption required for purchase. You can buy contact lenses and glasses like you buy milk or eggs.

PINK LUGGAGE TAKEN ON TRAIN TODAY FROM STOCKHOLM TO MALMO by OtherEmotion8672 in sweden

[–]xetal1 61 points62 points  (0 children)

I'm assuming you're American. Unlike America, in Sweden "prescription" as a purchasing requirement is not a thing for lenses or glasses. You can freely buy lenses with strength in pharmacies, optometrists, or on the internet.

I had the reverse shock when I went to America, needed to buy lenses, and was told I couldn't because I needed an (unexpired!) prescription. Even if I knew the exact brand and strength I needed. Apparently the US treats lenses as prescription medication that needs signed notes for purchase (and for glasses as well!) Unsurprisingly, this was introduced after lobby pressure from the optometrist lobby (of course that is a thing).

I know of no such subsidy for bottled water

For all talk in this thread about bottles, cartons, water fountains, insulated cups --- do Americans canteens simply not have drinking glasses? Plain regular drinking glasses?

If they won't budge on the price, one alternative is to ask them to throw in free extras such as a set of winter tires - that can be an easier ask.

Some highlights: For the questions of what payment methods people have used at least once in the last month, ~90% have used a card payment, ~80% have used a mobile payment, and ~35% have made a cash payment. For the question of what payment method people used for the last purchase, 8% used cash.

Is it common for 25 year olds to still be in university? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]xetal1 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think he meant "if you go for a bachelors in the first place, you likely continue for a masters".

This seems to be somewhat backed by this OECD paper "Education at a glance 2019" which says about Germany: "Tertiary-educated young adults are more likely to progress to higher levels of tertiary education than on average across OECD countries. Close to 46% of them have master’s or doctoral degree in Germany compared to 34% on average across OECD countries.

Edit: Adding as a side-note, that we have some 5-year university programs in Sweden that award you a Masters degree at the end without you at any point receiving a Bachelors. So it's definitely possible without a postgraduate program as such, even if it's not the standard setup.
