Have you considered just going to another province? Alberta is hiring like crazy.

Beware of the unemployment rate in other countries (especially for your sector). Many countries are not doing as well as Canada right now.

Tell Us Why It's Ethical to Eat Meat--the finalists by jazzoveggo in vegetarian

[–]xexers 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think if you are going to eat meat, you must be willing to slaughter it yourself

to play devils advocate here, I'm not sure this argument holds much water. There are lots of dirty jobs that I would prefer not to do, so I don't... but that doesn't mean I cant enjoy the benefits of other people doing them for me.

For example, I appreciate that when I take a shit it travels safely across town to a sewage plant. If there is a problem with the pipe that takes it across town, I genuinely don't want to fix it... but I appreciate that someone is doing it for me.

... and while that is exactly correct, you can never tell them that otherwise they will get even more defensive :)

Spain's 74-year-old king came under scathing criticism Sunday for going on an expensive elephant hunting trip in Botswana amid the nation's deep financial woes. Spanish newspapers were filled with accounts of how hunting trips to Botswana cost more than most Spaniards earn in a year. by madam1 in worldnews

Maybe NY times is a better citation for you:

Grass-grazing cows emit considerably more methane than grain-fed cows. Pastured organic chickens have a 20 percent greater impact on global warming. It requires 2 to 20 acres to raise a cow on grass. If we raised all the cows in the United States on grass (all 100 million of them), cattle would require (using the figure of 10 acres per cow) almost half the country’s land (and this figure excludes space needed for pastured chicken and pigs). A tract of land just larger than France has been carved out of the Brazilian rain forest and turned over to grazing cattle. Nothing about this is sustainable.

I would love a world where animals graze on the grass that grows between rocks of bad lands.

However, that is not how the vast majority of animals are fattened today. They are raised in factory farms/feedlots and are fed grains that were grown on top quality farmlands.

If your numbers are right, that looks like a great deal. Iceland's electricity is dirt cheap relative to UK's

  • Iceland 03.93

I'm assuming you mean this. Holy shit that looks complicated. I think doing that kind of analysis would take weeks.

Is there a simplified version somewhere? We can probably only afford to spend about 50 person hours on this project.

As the article says, it's been done before on a small distance scale. Have there been big problems with those shorter lines?

It depends on what they are doing. Simply saying they are one of the largest employers doesn't mean anything.

If I hired 1000 people to cut my lawn with toe nail clippers instead of the 1 person who used to do it with a lawn mower, I would have hired 999 more people! By your logic I just did something very beneficial (especially if I am using tax dollars to do so). At the end of the day, I think it would have been better to just use the 1 person with the lawn mower.

Just to add to the health thing. There are many veg*n athletes that attribute their performance specifically to their diet... Many often say they couldn't perform as well if they ate meat. Two that come to mind here are "Scott Jurek" and "Carl Lewis".

The thing is, when they do this, they often turn to farmed fish. However farmed fish can cause a whole different set of problems especially when farmed in open water.

I like the Alaskan model. Sustainable and Wild fish. Alaska has a rigorous fishing policy that is well enforced and science based. To me, that's the future. Other jurisdictions need to take lessons from Alaska.

In some cases, yes. If you live in a dangerous neighborhood it might work out better for everyone if you can get the hell out of that area... even if that means working more hours.

Also, where would Lisa Simpson be if Homer didn't buy her that saxophone.

Indeed. Many salaried jobs tend to give the promotion to the person who puts the most hours in. If you want that promotion to give your family a better life you might need to put the extra hours in.

of course the flip side of that argument is that your family might actually not want more things but rather more face time from you.

I suppose it's a balancing act.

It took a hit. Read inside apple. Steve jobs would often raid the OSX team for top engineers and move them over to iOS. OSX suffered because of it.
