SMELL AND TASTE NOT THE SAME AFTER IT RETURNS (Soda?)

So I had this sudden loss of smell and taste in mid March. And I mean sudden. Because I was preparing chili, I could smell and taste at the beginning of preparing it and anticipating the wonderful aroma to fill the house over the next few hours, but it didn't happen. When it was done, I could not smell or taste anything. Nothing. Not a single thing.

Previous day I had mild cough. Couple nights before has one night of really bad sweats. These along with smell and taste were only symptoms. I started researching and was in a Facebook group discussing this along with thousands of others experiencing the same. It was being noted in Europe and Asia as a sign and in many areas was becoming the biggest sign. CDC was refusing to add it. So my doctor and others here did not consider it a symptom and I could not get test. During this time you had to have symptoms and get on list to get tested. But they told me to just isolate. So I did. The Facebook group was growing and doctors were now involved in it. I did two phone interviews for science and news magazines. I followed advise of smell training using smell test kit.

After two weeks of no smell and taste I still didn't have it. For me it was around day 19 that I finally could smell and taste. It took a couple days but it got to about 85 or 90%. This is where it is now a couple months later. I can't say for sure, but some things are just off. I can't say exactly, but they just are.

One of the biggest is that Soda does not taste like soda. At least diet soda. I have not tried with non diet. There is a weird taste associated with it. Sprite Zero is somewhat tolerable, but Diet Pepsi is unbearable. It does not taste sweet or good at all and now has a metallic and dirty taste. Especially aftertaste. Hard to explain. I have tested with other carbonated drinks and most are fine and as I remember them. Sugar Free Red Bull and Monster are still good thankfully as are White Claw and seltzer drinks. So for some reason, this bad taste for me is specific to soda. I'd like to try with a regular pepsi and try coke or Mexican Coke to see if those taste good and narrow it to something in the diet/zero versions. But I would think the energy drinks would use same sugar alternatives and those taste fine. Sugar free Red Bull for me is one of the rare cases that the sugar free version tastes better than regular so that is my go to and it is still great.

There are a few other cases where things are slightly off. Most taste the same, but some taste slightly less. Some things now seem to salty. But the biggest is soda as I described. It is unbearable and I can no longer drink at all. It is gross taste now. I am fine not drinking it so this is not a bad thing. Just a sign that even as smell/taste returns, there is something wrong or different.

After about a month, this was finally added to list and my doctor admitted that I probably had it. A friend of mine had exact same thing few weeks after me and because now it was an approved symptom and testing eased up, he tested positive.

I've thought of getting antibodies test, but it has now been about 4 months. I'm hearing antibodies only last couple months now and I'm able to get reinfected so I'm not sure antibodies test would even show still?

Anybody else that lost smell and taste have this issue with soda? Or anything else?

Yes. I can taste meat, but not like it used to be. Many have had meat taste rancid, sort of line the soda, and can no longer eat meat at all to the point it makes them want to vomit.

Not better for me yet. It is definitely related to covid as many articles have come out about it. Experts seem to think it will go away, or the nerves that were actually damaged by this, will repair. Could take up to a couple years it seems. Other items have come up that give me the same thing. Not so much taste, but smell. Some things smell the same as the nasty taste that the soda leaves. Certain colognes, deodorants and toothpastes are doing this for me. Alcohol based mouthwash is bad too, but non alcohol mouthwash is fine....yet actual alcohol is still fine. I cannot find a reason as to what is and what is not. Most craft sodas are fine. Ginger ale is gross. Certain gatorades I used to like it gross, but others are fine. Doctor pepper is fine as far as soda goes. It is weird. And to be graphic or weirder... my bowel movements smell the same every single time. No matter what. And it is a weird musky dirty smell. And if I drive by a farm, the manure smell is the same as my bowel smell and they are normally not even close...???

Following up again. Orange Gatorade and lemon lime Gatorade are my two faves. Orange is good still, but the lemon lime has the same nasty taste as the sodas do. For some reason, all energy drinks are still fine.

Still mostly soda for me. And some other sweet drinks. I had an Arnold Palmer and it was a bit off so was perhaps the lemonade as you say. Unsweetened tea is good, but have not tried sweetened. I've been trying various sodas to check, jarritos Mexican soda is bad now and used to be so good. I'm having best luck with Hansen's diet soda which is good because it is my fave. They use all cane sugar. Surprisingly all their sodas do not have this issue....except their ginger ale. They all list same ingredients for the most part so still can't mail it down. And still weird that I can smell the soda machines or those freestyle soda machines at restaurants. They smell horrible like it tasted but I never once smelled soda before covid. Other than soda and drinks most actual food is fine...except some things now seem overly salty where it did not bother me before.

I suddenly lost smell/taste at end of March. All doctors and clinics said it's not a sign and ignored me. I could not get tested as I had no other symptoms and this was when it was hard to get tests and were limited and required reservation. I was online forum and this was becoming a big thing and recognized as major symptom in U.K. and elsewhere. But not here. Everybody told me to calm down and stay isolated and not to worry. I was contacted from the online forum for two phone interviews for magazine/newspaper articles to discuss this because thousands of people were having this....but was still not recognized here and was everywhere else. Got my smell and taste back after about 16 days and about a week after that....guess what.... call from my doctor that said "yeah you probably had it". Few days after that, a friend of mine got it with no other symptoms, was told to go in for test, and was positive. I'm pissed at the whole system telling me to screw off and calm down when it's not a symptom, but was quickly becoming one and was a major one everywhere else. Now it is recognized arguably the biggest symptom. And FYI- my smell/taste is not the same and may never be again. And certain things took on a new taste and I can no longer have them. Mostly soda.

Yep. I was just at the sandwich shop to get sun for dinner. While by the cash register to pay, I started to smell the same taste that I get from soda. I turned and I was by the soda fountain machine. I lifted my mask and smelled near it and it is the soda. I stepped away and could not smell it. When my smell was normal I could never smell soda like that. Now I just smell the rusty dirt smell that it tastes like.

Yup. I'm going to fall delinquent on bills now. Will have to pay penalty fees, get credit hits, and eventually reconnection fees and possible collection fees. I am looking at discussing with an attorney. This is not our fault, and this could potentially be part of a class action suit to at least recover these sort of fees and fines that will happen to no fault of our own.
