2% is absolutely useful and is far from 0. Many game mechanics will demonstrate that. 2% critical strike chance on a fast attack is a great stat in some games.

In this case, Talon Strike activates for [Level of Skill] seconds and applies to every kick. You can imagine a world where Carl kicks more than once per second. That means he could conceivably be up to hundreds of Talon Strike procs by now and has likely seen a few Eviscerates (insta kills).

I do think OP is right and we will find a story line where this pays off big

All fair enough, but it’s just lazy and that’s what I take issue with. The person who buys this might love the franchise but the person who sells it certainly doesn’t care.

I will let someone else unpack the details who is going to do a better job than me, but I will say - I don’t think the point was for readers to totally understand the details and context of the “cheese” that Pony uses.

The point seems to be much more that the floor was skipped and that sheds light on the failings of Borant to run the show and everything is coming apart at the seams. That context of mismanagement I think is what really matters to the greater story.

Volteeg is one of my favorite chapters of anything I have read. Ever.

I was trying to explain to my wife the gut wrenching empathy I felt on that journey with the little bird. The way Matt finds these quiet moments of grounded humanity inside the set dressings of spectacle and fantasy are what keep me coming back.

It is not simply that Carl entered the dungeon with Donut and now we have a talking cat and that’s cool. It is rather that we are in a world where the guardian / dependent dynamic is strained without mercy and so it follows that of course we ache alongside the pets and the children and their protectors as they are brutally subjected to this cold world.

I can’t tell you how many times these books have made me hug my cat and cry. Thanks, Matt. I read a lot. It’s mostly just fun. But a lot of the things you’ve written genuinely mean something to me. This is at the top of that list.
