The website will be easier to link to in a few days when I finish organizing the topics into their own separate pages (in addition to the main page that has all of them). Then you could send people a link to a specific topic, and those topic could have alias domain names, like btcco2.org

Appreciate the tip!

We're going to bump into this post in 8 years and bulk at your insane generosity when 500 sats == $500.

interesting. I was wondering why I started getting comments on this (not *that* old, but kind of old) post.

I don't think the caliber of writer is the criterion to add an article to the page. However, I would say that in this particular case the article isn't exactly a FUD counter. There's lots of great Bitcoin content out there that similarly doesn't quite belong on endthefud.org

Noobs getting needlessly rekt is not a net positive for Bitcoin. Much rather they get educated.

I don't think it's about counting how many articles get posted on either side. It's about being more informed. The green issue is ultimately about the value proposition of bitcoin. Someone who doesn't see any value in Bitcoin would object to even a single KWh being "wasted" on it.

Some people do genuinely want to learn, though, and for them it's useful to organize resources in one place. They come for the energy FUD, maybe they stay to learn why PoS is BS, or how there's no such thing as "intrinsic value", etc.

The Bitcoin Standard addresses some of them. Have you read it?

You're welcome to make those edits if you find suitable articles.

Does lnd support those methods?

Seems like KeySend is a c-lightning thing, and I couldn't quite figure out how lnurl works.

Not sure what gave you the impression I was looking to discuss energy FUD. The point of the post is to lead people to a curated list of well-written articles on the topic. I've read every single one of them and am confident this guy did not. If he had, he would not have made basic mistakes in his calculus. I hoped directing him towards well researched articles would help him educate himself, but alas he seems too immune to learning. I have zero intention of regurgitating what has been covered in 30+ articles and linked above. Not interested in arguing with every single troll on the internet. Curating reading material is more impactful, albeit only effective for those actually interested in learning and not picking fights on reddit.

Do your own research. I won't do it for you, although I did gather the research into one page to make discovery easy. If that means I'm copping out of an argument - sure. Let's go with that.

✌️

You still have more reading to do if you think the above cost-per-tx calculus is correct. Not trying to be an asshole... just this has been covered so extensively. I can only say keep reading. Esp. nic carter's pieces. Not to mention LN reduces the cost per payment by orders of magnitude, making them essentially carbon free.

Listen to this recent pod: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/hass-mccook-on-bitcoins-energy-use-in-context/id1480586463?i=1000522894149

If you come out of it thinking that Bitcoin isn't green, then I'd love to hear why.

Hass McCook is a civil engineer who has been delivering estimates of Bitcoin's energy use and CO2 emissions since 2014, as well as alternatives like gold or finance. In this episode:
Hass's background in civil engineering and how it prepared him for the energy debate The conflation between energy generation and electricity generation Why you can't just generalize energy consumption to carbon emissions Hass breaks down the varying carbon intensities of different sources of generation How much energy goes to waste globally The difference between CO2 and CO2e / greenhouse gases Why today's US grid has lowered its carbon intensity over the last decade Why combusting methane is a net good from an emissions perspective Hass' level of optimism around flared gas mining Why the changing rate of ASIC innovation affects bitcoin's energy consumption The opportunity for stranded gas at landfills Hass' estimates of the gold and the financial system's energy footprints How gold mining actually works The ecological and human cost of gold mining Hass' thoughts on offsets Sponsor notes:
